I've never seen this and it disappoints me bc this was one of her best one liners , buy who's afraid of virginia woolf ? Is one of my favorite movies . It's hilarious bc Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton were actually divorcing and all the arguing and hatred was real . I love realness in movies ,
@mattychase Yes, but let's not forget the dramatic scene where Bette is assaulted by the crazy newspaper seller and the scene where she dies at the train station while a spooky version of 'Chicago' is played haha. It's so camp!
@whalleyPE Lol, i'm afraid you're mistaken. This is defintely from 'Beyond The Forest'. I watched the movie and took it from there. You can check anywhere online and it will confirm what I just told you lol. There's no such movie as 'The Sting Of Evil'
@AntinousIsGod1 thanks, I was just going by the name I watched on youTube. Good to know what it is. I'm surprised that there was a Bette movie i hadn't seen.
@nightstalkerck It's not her best, especially since after this she did he definitive film 'All About Eve', but it's campy fun lol :). I got a copy off ioffer, you can try there. It's not on official DVD but you can get a great dvd-r recorded from TCM
Davis was saying everyone imitates her saying the way Liz Taylor did in Virginia Woolf, when she said it in a more sublte way. What it was is Liz Taylor's version epitomized the way we picture Davis saying it because Davis often did deliver her lines that way in many of her films.
the original is not similar to the Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf reference, however that scene and Liz's performance in Woolf is genius. In fact, regarding the reference Bette Davis famously observed "Liz Taylor does a better bette davis than bette davis!" or something to that effect.
Who's Afraid of Virginia What's-her-name lied! Lied to me! She didn't just set down her groceries at all! She never had any groceries! My childhood fantasies destroyed!
@ThaddeusRobe I used to think it was on purpose, since she wanted to know what the name of the picture was so badly, she explained the seen with such great detail but George could not remember, when she did not even explain it right... I found it funny but I always wonder if it was just the writer's mistake
@ThaddeusRobe I guess if you consider the fact that beyond the forest would hardly have played again anywhere after its release, it makes sense that the only time the writers of that scene would have seen it was in 1949/50 or on television. The one consolation we have for not having lived contemporaneously with people like Bette is the fact that we can watch them whenever we want.
@ThaddeusRobe I always though that the reason why the husband never guess the movie was because she recreated the scene all wrong. I mean, because Martha acted all wrong the scene, saying things that wasn´t there, is precisely the reason why George never get it.

Bette Davis: "What a dump."
Elizabeth Taylor: ""H-WHAT A DUMP-AH!"
Both versions are classic.

She didn't say it quite like it has been imitated by impersonators.
julianasrainbow 11 months ago
@julianasrainbow Elizabeth Taylor did say it the same way as her the first time it came out of her mouth though.

Dear Miss Titanic,
Well the paraphrasing speaker may use emphasis where it is felt to be necessary; no harm in that.
.
What's you house like, is it a bit dumpy?, would you say?
Cheers.
