  • good thing is..you can switch between the graphics in the games

  • tbh i like both, with LCR i played it twice, once on the new and again on the old, such nice games with either graphics options

  • Loving the remake ! great job !

And everyone disagreeing should really stop moaning since you can still play this version old style pressing F10, nice touch !

  • It's just not the same.

  • Well regardless of how you feel about the graphics, you have to appreciate the added voices.

  • the new graphics look really crappy..

  • the remake doesn`t have any charme :D

  • The first one have backgrounds and moving too better. In the second one the backgrounds are like children draw!

  • then is better now and 4ever!!

  • my vote is for the Original

  • Guybrush animation is fair uglier in the remake than in the original...

  • Pixelart has always been and still is amazing, because it requires a lot of work and patience so mostly good artists attempt it, people who really gotta love the art.

That being said the new one still looks great, but I gre up with the old, so...

  • The old one is muuuch better and I love the way Guybrush looks :D the new version is okay also.

  • I'm glad that companies are remaking these great games! I really hope they remake the maniac mansion series, speicically Day fo the Tentacle! ^_^

  • I definately like the older version more. :)

  • What artistic genius did they fire after the 3rd game?

  • No way! The original version is a thousand times better! I miss old '90... :(

  • in 1990 the graphic and the voices were absolutely better: IMAGINATION created everything. imagination always wins against computer 3D graphics!

  • I thought it would be 3D dang

  • PC 1990 > XBLA 2009

  • Wtf? I prefer the old version ! :/

  • @EricNaron So play it, you can switch between the two.

  • i don't like the voices

part of the originality was giving them your own voices

  • I've finished both versions of the game, and i've gotta say i prefer the special edition. To me it seems like you guys are trying too hard to be OGMI...

  • they're practically the same, but naturally incomparible. prefer pixels, for that is fluid nostalgy

  • guybrush looks homo in the remake

  • original is much better :D

  • bah, guys that can sketch decently on truecolor... there are 13 a dozen, and no soul or impact is required.

pixelart requires actual skills, and some impact is guarranteed.

  • The old one is nice, but I kinda miss the 'talkie' function... :/

  • ive got both n still luvn more da old one

  • OLDER ONE FTW

  • Nothing like the classic version of this revolutionary game. Gotta give kudos to the folks that re-did it tho cuz they stayed true to what the game is about.

  • LONG LIVE FOR PIXELS!!!

  • they could at least move their mouths

  • nothing can compare with the original :D

  • I was pretty dissapointed with this version, especially the Character designs and the animation quality. This game really managed missing animations , the 20 years old original had. And they could have made the Controls for the consoles better, something like 1 handed controls. Good thing the 2. game had some of these issues fixed

  • I personally prefer the original one. But the new one looks charmful too.

  • The only thing i dont like about the special editions is the way the characters walk.

They dont actually walk, they are gliding. Its looks rediculous.

  • the original looks way better. but when they released the special edition why dident they add a 3rd alternative where you could play the game with the old graphics but with the voices from the new version. now thats how i want to play it. otherwise i could just use my original Amiga copy of the game atleast its more nostalgic that way.

  • i personally prefer the new one just because it has voice acting

  • The old graphics are actually better than the new ones.

  • I prefer the old graphics in the scenes where you talk and appears a picture, it was more realistic than the new one, but I think the background looks better in the Special Edition. I like the idea of adding voices too.

  • the new version totaly SUCKS!!!!

  • The old Pixels Win by millions. Much more phantasy granted or what ever, its just better

  • its fantastic, voices and characters are brought to life so much more, think the second one was a bit lazy, think they could have done more the style of MI3 with it but still excellent

  • I have The Secret Of Monkey Island in Amiga, PC (DOS) and Ps3 and I still prefer Amiga :D Also when I play it on Ps3 I use classic mode most of the time... of course I sometimes use new verson.. but very rarely

  • och stop with ur nostalgiv bull, the new graphics were far better, it was the exact same game. very clever what they did, I enjoyed is more with the voices actually, hope they do MI 2

  • @xander18788 The MI2 remake is already out :)

  • @xander18788 Plus MI2 has like a DVD Commentary Track for certain scenes where 3 designers including Ron Gilbert comment on the what/why/how of that scene. It's awesome:)

  • I prefer the classic... better graphics, betters movements.

By the way, in the modern game Lechuck doesnt like a ghost...

  • I loved the old version, but new is good to

  • I prefer the old version, but if the updated graphics get newer generations to play Monkey Island, then its fine by me. :)

  • SUX0RZ

  • If they were to do a remake with the integration of 3D graphics, they should have made it 3D, or else if they really want to keep the semi 2D format at least make the environment more realistic. Take Grim Fandango for example, even though that game was a hybrid 2D/3D platform the environment was really nicely done in that game despite it being done in the early 2000 decade.

  • The new version is too smooth, the character don't walk, they're gliding on the floor! However i'm influenced by my memories, the original IS the original but i'm happy that the new generation could enjoy this old games =)

  • @MidoriKappa I was thinking the same thing about the walking animation. I just can't get used to that.

  • I like the old version much more!

  • Im kind of soft for the old one. But the new is pretty good not all to far from the classic one

  • I loved the original! This looks okay, but the character design is a bit...eh...geometrical. Oh, good God, I can't imagine what the insult swordfights would be like. lol

  • i didnt even know Lucas Arts did this...

i fail to see why a remake was needed though :) the original klcks ass and the old graphics and sounds are part of it's charm

  • @yumekoe Well this allows a new audience to get into the game. Plus if you want, just switch on classic mode and voilá, back to the old game!

  • What I really don't like is that the new backgrounds are sometimes pixelated. It's especially noticeable in the forrest-maze.

Please, LucasArts, if you're going to remake something, atleast finish up the backgrounds... :/

  • Did you notice that the Governor is black in the old graphics, while she's white in the new one?

Btw, I prefer the new version, must be because I played that first.

  • the old good pixels have the charm!

  • Ugh. I love and hate to say it at the same time: The original Secret of Monkey Island is sooo much better. The only good things about this new one are the voices and music. The rest is crap. Since when did Lucasarts think I would like Guybrush to look like frakiing Johnny Bravo, and the rest of em look like they're made of play-dough?.

  • i prefer the old one too. just add the music and voices and its done, the new graphics arent that good

  • You can switch between old and new style at any time

So if u like the old style better u can play that the whole time

  • I didn't know that skeleton with LeChuck was actually a girl before i saw the new remake ! ^__^

I wanna play it on Vista, anyone knows if it will work on it ?

  • @GenyaArikado: What are you talking about? The skeleton's name is Bob, is referred to as "he", AND he is voiced by a male voice actor.

  • ahaa good, then i thought right from the beginning :) this vid confused me .

  • The "1990" text in this video is not correct. Those images at the top are from the 256 color version (VGA), released in *1991*

The original 16 color version (EGA) from 1990 looked like this: watch?v=OrV_SJpla4w

(this video is from the demo version but the full version looked the same)

  • I absolutely hate Guybrush's character design in this so called new version, the rest of the the graphics look ok, but the original version definitly has more charm.

A good thing to compare from this game is the cover art. The original had a beautifull painting done by artist Steve Purcell, the new one has a mediocre digital painting complete with the horrible looking Guybrush.

  • LUCAS fucked up the ART... watch this amateur project and compare: watch?v=3bInZ7_y4Lw

  • @mrvision That isn't amateur. I watched all the associated videos to that and I believe it was someone who actually works on the cryengine.

  • wow, i cant wait to get this for my dreamcast, oh wait...

  • i like the art of the older one more some how lol :p

  • I miss games like this. Bring back Broken Sword plz!!!!!

  • wow such refinement

    jesus xbros

how could you call this effort

  • think i prefer the originals ... yet i did enjoy MI3 was quite funny... i think lechucks voice in this vid is the same as MI3 but im not sure about guybrush's!

  • !ATTENTION ALL YOUTUBERS!

Mr. Black will be returning to his original channel

  • Hmm..I want a rubberchicken with a pulley in the middle...

  • I like the old one much more.

  • the version on the wiiware is in full 3d

  • ZachLovesDinner: That's not the same game...

  • oh.

    well it's in 3d

  • The original may look pixelated but the pirate at :32 is way more realistic and scary than the 3D. The city landscape in 3D looks good but Guybrush's model and it's movement looks way fake. Voices in the new version is okay except they don't match up the best in some parts.

I still prefer the original because the new one is overtly reliant on 3D. Incorporate some 3D but do a better job on Guybrush's walking movement.

Curse of Monkey Island was one of the best ones of the series. Funny Murray

  • SCUMM Engine should be back for Monkey Island games!

Pixelated games have more depth then 3D graphics :(

  • The movement of the characters in the high-res one is rubbish, they look like theyre just gliding and animating at the same time, which breaks the illusion :(

  • I like the original better. More nostalgic. Doesn't work on Vista sadly :(

  • What doesnt work on vista? the original? you not heard of dosbox or scummvm?

  • Uh, no sorry. We're not all as computer savvy as you...

  • oh ok well google scummvm or dosbox and you will find a program to run the old dos games :o).

  • Ok cool, I appreciate it!

  • if you want it just to play the old lucasarts games then id say go for scummvm as its easier to set up than dosbox but if you want to run a wide variety of old dos games then get dosbox. Or you could just get both and have done with it hehe. its ok anytime :o)

  • ScummVM works even on Vista. Just use it for playing MI1.

  • Thanks! Tried it and played MI1 and Sam&Max!

  • 0:33 is anyone else creeped out by that pirate in special edition mode.

  • A funny difference between the original and the special edition. Go to the Giant Monkey Head, where the idols are placed. In the old game you could see an idol of Sam&Max, in the special edition you can see an idol of The Purple Tentacle instead.

  • that´s because lucasarts lost the rights on sam&max. and the purple tentacle just fits in place :-)

  • There's also a Manny Calavera skull head image on the rock, where LeChuck's ship is hiding in "hell." It isn't there in the original because... Grim Fandango didn't exist yet :D

  • Should of used the graphical and animation style from Curse of monkey island.

  • i like the classic better :/

  • Yeah, I kinda like the old one better. Still the whole F10 thing works well.

  • i like the older one more ;)

  • also i agree with the leisure suit larry comment. but which one are you talking about. Hopefully "looking for love in all the wrong places"

  • im about to go buy this along with marvel vs capcom 2. I was young wehn both of them originally came out so i can enjoy both of them really for the first time. Almost as good as playing half-life 2 for the first tiem on the orange box!

  • This Sucks ... monkey 2 reach it the best quality ever ... it dosent need any remake ... o false sequels .... PLEASE RON ( gilbert ) come BACK !!!!

    WE LOVE YoU ....

  • I hope Leisure Suit Larry gets the same treatment some day.

  • The new version of Threepwood walks like the rod up his arse has a rod up its arse.

  • Does anybody know whether they are going to do the same thing with "LeChuck's revenge" aswell? Would have been nice!

  • The realistic faces were way more awesome because it added to the humor.

  • wow this looks ace. it always bothered by about the ms-dos version having poxy sounds n no voice vbut this looks ace.. my sis cant play it on ms-dos wnt work on vista but maybe special ed will. ACE!

  • ...ace? Are you trying to start a new (recycled) bit of slang or something?

  • nopes, just wat randomly came out

  • The backgrounds, music and voice acting are top notch. The animations are meh.. They could've done a better job making them more smoother but oh well.

  • Love this game

  • I better like the original graphics..

  • Are they going to release a pc demo for this?

  • The game is already out for sale. Buy it, and they might as well make another one.

  • Dude I am aware of that. I said "demo."

  • I like the voiceovers, but I much prefer the original graphics. Look at those hideous japanese style sprites... *gags*

  • i dont like the new guybrush's hair... its so wierd, but not in a good way

  • awesome remake, It gives the game a more bizarre look, which kinda fits cause monkey islands never been a serious game.

  • I like the old version better.

I wonder if special edition features the stump joke.

  • No it doesn't

  • What!

The single greatest part of the entire series removed so the idiots wont be confused where the other discs are.

  • it doesn't

  • Its nice to switch between the old and the new , brings back some memories :D , basicaly i played this when i was a kid when it came out in 1990 and played all the monkey island games since , + the indiana games.. They are great and i was shocked when kids these days have no idea what monkey island is , its great they will now and hav a chance to play it. Although i dont agree with the hints system , maybe thats bcuz it took me 2 days to figure out how to put the guard dogs to sleep :P.

  • Hints have always been a part of these games.

If you remember, a lot of the old games like this came with a paper-based hint system where you had to use a provided red filter to read text that's printed in very light blue on a page.

  • holy crap! i remeber that for indiana jones! you read henrys diary! was awesome

  • buy it on steam only $9.95 and prepare to use the F10 key alot (this switches between old and new). water effects are the best.

  • I can't wait!! Im geting pc version this and tales of monkey island will keep me entertaned 4 ever

  • ogmgmgmgg aoaooa oohhhh my god

  • I don't know whether to get this or not. I don't want to ruin my memories of the most amazing game ever.

But at the same time the voices are tempting...

But what did they do to Guybrush?

    He looks better as pixels.

The original has much more detail in the backgrounds

  • if you didn't know you can switch between old and new look any time you want, by just pressing 1 button

  • Seriously , it doesn't ruin a thing. I'm a massive fan of the SUMVM engine games but this is great! , and if you dont want to play it with the new graphics then just press F10 (PC) and u got the old version. But tbh the graphical enhancements are so slight that it doesnt really become an issue.

  • Hang on - what's the point in spending money so I can press F10?

Why can't I just play my old version.

Never thought of that did you?

  • Some times i like to play the game with the new graphics , certain scenes i like to play it with the old graphics.. it's a nice option to have. The gameplay is still the same either way. I basically press F10 everytime i enter a new area to remind myself of how it looked all those years ago , but then switch back to the new version for the voice dialogue. Your choice , but having both imo just makes a good game even better.

  • If you don't want it, don't buy it. No one's forcing you. I think they did a great job!

  • Both looks pretty good considering the XBLA is going in a different style and the PCs looks good for its time.

  • 4th's graphics were pretty crappy, but after playing through it, i have to say it still had the appeal the first 3 had. I gotta try out the new one thats coming out (Monkey Island Fanboy Forever)

  • The old version WTFPWNS the new one. The talkie is a nice addition though.

  • Ask me about Grim Fandango.

  • BUY LOOM!

  • The old one is far better... more contrast in the graphics, more "character" on the characters, animation although less fluid is more realistic (just look at the walk on the old vs the walk on the new one!)... a shame, because this is a great game.

  • Ask me about LOOM.

  • Is it by Brian Moritary? Does it have an elegant point n click interface?

  • Prefer the older one by far, but the added voice acting is a nice touch.

  • First computer game I ever bought was this.

    Great memories.

  • old one is superior.

  • is monkey island available to download from xbla now?

  • Not yet, but lower the anchor on july 15

  • Return was always my favourite Monkey Island game.

    I wish they'd make a new one, not just a re-hash of a classic...

I'm not complaining though, this means I get to play it all over again :D

  • Nostalgia fools you all.

  • i think its fairly awesome

i still've got to play it, but the level of detail put into the game while staying true to SCUMM is astonishing.

Also, praise Lucas Arts for the inclusion of voice actors; I hate text.

  • Actually, they built it on top of scumm.

  • Ok.

  • Ok, no problem. I didn't.

  • mmm, not a bad version, but not good either. theres some things i wish they didnt change...

  • Superb!! Unlike the new and very disappointing "Tales of MI" it's great to see this has remained faithful to the original and retained the atmosphere.

    Can't wait to play it!!

  • How has the newer one not retained the atmosphere?

  • Sadly, it looks like cheap and amateur fan fiction, like it was thrown together in a couple of weeks.

Although the original games were dated, they had great visual style and a lot of thought went into the scenes.

  • ...and still I prefer the old version *.*

  • Old one rueles!

  • Comment removed

  • I love Escape From monkey Island, but i want to play this one.

  • Is it a pedophile at 1:46 ?

  • I'm a huge fan of this series and hope this game sells well. Plus, it looks fantastic, so why not pick up one of the best puzzle-adventure games of all time.

  • whats this game about?? all i can see is a sort of clicking game , idk.

  • point'n'click adventure doh

  • its a great game! u should try playing it to find out what its about!!! explaining it wouldnt give the game justice!!

  • xbox live epic failed

  • You're mom epic failed.

  • Wow, they tried very hard, not to make it too scary..

god fobid with all the violence we see on TV, we might scare children with scary pictures of clowns... 1:34

    please...gimme a break,..
