  • 6:37 :D

  • The audio loses sync pretty early on.

  • Those folks that made shrek just don't get it. I bet they were thinking... "how can we fill up 2 hours of 'movie'" as if they could just dump garbage with hardly any plot, jokes worse than anything i've found in a cracker jack box, and character development that is as dramatic as an episode of barney and friends.

  • one hundred million hours to render?? That's over TEN THOUSAND YEARS....Am i hearing this right??

  • It's funny tho, I think I can do all the cgi scenes in the first Tron within a week. And I'm yet considered as a beginner in 3D animation. That's just so unfair !! ^^

  • actually, softimage was used for t2 and jurassic park. the discovery people should do their research...

  • Were they using Nt.3.51 for Shrek?

  • I like how when people talk in this its out of sync

  • Can you PM me link to this documentary.Audio is not sync with video. :(

  • now in a few days i can make a realistic render of a spacecraft in its environment....using google and piratebay as tools for my know how

  • Alias used in Jurassic park? I'm sure it was but Softimage was a huge part of that movie. This thing makes it sound like it was all Alias all the time.

  • haha, i cant believe we all thought they look real back then, looking back at past video games, it all looks so fake

  • Actually, Toy Story was the first full animated feature film where i forgot that those characters were just simple computer datas. No, they were absolutely alive, and heart touching not like DreamWorks's stuff, the driving on funny stories, and this is the fact why they will never beat Pixar. :)

  • 6:35 That was pure nightmare fuel.

  • Comment removed

  • How the hell can you not mention Ed Catmull/Pixar in this.. Toy story was the first ever fully computer animated feature. I cannot believe how biased this documentary is.

  • @lakini1103

fully agree with all posts relating to the lack of content regarding Pixar, I was personally involved in the advertising of Toy Story for buisness marketing at sun microsystems. However Pixar content sadly wasnt in this particular documentry.

  • @lakini1103

True, how odd this documentary only mentioned Dreamworks. Dreamworks wasn't even born when Pixar's Toy Story wrote the history of computer animation.

  • LAGGY VIDEO!

  • The end was sooo hinting at CGI Pornography! lol

  • Dreamworks sucks :|. Every movie has to do with an animal with a crooked smile or some other unfunny joke.

  • tron was awesome!

  • tron is so awesome

  • Yeah, bash Tron, Dreamworks, dorks, will ya! Let me tell ya, though, Shrek SUCKED ! And Tron was awesome.

  • no mention about Softimage? 3D Studio? Montreal?

  • 4 Million for CGI movie... Nowadays it's like hundred of millions of dollars.

  • @zombieiscool yeaa man.. avatar cost 500 million aparently, not sure how much of that went to the CGI effects.. i'm guessing alot tho

  • I heard it was officially $237 million dollars to make it, and $150 million dollars for advertising.

Might of been like $310 million for making it and $150 for advertising.

  • I always found computer animation creepy. Look at 6:36 for instance.

  • Whoops. Typed this on the wrong profile.

  • I plan to work with CG in the future as a film producer! I am SUPER excited about the future of CG! I can combine live action and CG SEEMLESSLY!

  • Why does the narrator add an r to the end of words? Like in drawing-r, Sega-r? Does he need a speech therapist?

  • great posting - nice job of editing too

  • terminator 2 & jurassic park is the best

  • Tron was made by four CG companies, not six animators.

  • wtf shrek broke through? MY ASS.

toy story was the first fully generated film! BY PIXAR! and it was realistic! wtf is this shit with dreamworks! im pissed :(

  • dont forget the SMALL SOLDIERS>..!!...

  • I agree. Dreamworks was years behind Pixar. Not only that, Pixar has a much bigger history of blockbusters.

  • @FpsMuch Exactly. Dreamworks contributed nothing to innovate or revolutionize CGI and here they are, dissing Tron and not even mentioning Toy Story. Toy Story is million times better than Shrek.

  • @FpsMuch

Agreed, Toy Story was the first and broke new ground in every respect, and definately ought to have been included as a major contributer for this doc. Shrek did experiment with many new techniques that had not been established prior, ie fluid, flame and cloth dynamics. Im guessing discovery channel has links with Dreamworks or Pixar didnt wish to contribute, being they released their own full length production. Pixar the story.

  • @FpsMuch agreed

  • @FpsMuch I like how they ignore Pixar. Bloody mac people.

  • If you do the research pixar wins almost all the computer animation awards

PIXAR IS #1 dreamworks is a credit stealing company

  • This documentary is a bunch of bullshit

    I agree with athr0x.

Dreamworks is company that is trying to take Pixar's credict for being revolutionary and innovative

look at The Pixar Story documentary which is the true story of computer animation

also if you look closely at this, the only people being interviewed are from dreamworks and nobody is from pixar

  • and.. oh.. didn't the final fantasy 7 cutscenes and the movies come before shrek? those humans were a lot more livelike

  • hm.. the guys behind pixar invented a lot of the methods used for both 2d and 3d animation, and they werent even mentioned? ..this docu is severely biased,

  • @athr0x

biased to who, I just thing its dumbed down and misinformed beyond belief

  • CGI has already reached its limits wherein "There are no more limits"..xD

  • my first 3d animation was done on an amiga but just to render 1 frame took like 20mins later got a sgi indy which was top end stuff at the time wavefront was advanced for the time too but again took like 3 days to render a 5min clip heh,,much faster these days although theres a lack of quality i think is more cartoony now

  • I don't understand why people thought TRON was a story-telling failure. My own explanation is that people just didn't get it. The whole movie was about ambition. The whole story and production embodied that same ethos.

  • WTF why did Ryan get an Oscar?! What is so SPECIAL about it? Enlighten me please!

  • Games now out strip the movie industry 8:26

  • Cool.

  • TRON was actually a great movie. People just didn't "get it" back then because no body knew the lingo. I was 11 when TRON hit the screen and I totally "got it" because at that time I was programming the ATARI with its PLAYER MISSILE GRAPHICS (aka SPRITES) in machine language. In other words, TRON was 10 to 15 years ahead with its story line.

  • arent you great

  • Autodesk now bought MAYA in 2006 and later on 3D MAX, MUDBOX, ETC....

  • Wow, Pixar got a bit shafted there eh?

  • "Ryan" is a great film. Everyone should go see it.

  • wow, i never new maya was so old

  • How can anyone even THINK onf making a "history of computer animation" without noting LucasArts, Pixar and Renderman?

Shrek was no damn milestone in CA. In fact compared to Monster Inc. (launched the same year) it was pretty weak attempt to make computer animated film. It's CGI was at least 2-3 years behind Pixar.

  • is this payed by dreamworks? no mention to Pixar, no mention to Toy Story, come on!

  • It's a couple seconds out of sync.

But at least it doesn't show people talking alot.

  • Realtime > Pre-Rendered

  • I always wanted to see something like this documentary :P

    <3 it
