This is one of the real anthems of that time. I was fourteen when this came out, and am proud to say that songs like this have shaped my personality :)
TV Smith, the singer, read a newspaper article when Gary Gilmore was about to be executed where Gary said he wanted to donate his eyes to science. He wrote a short story about how fucked up it would be to have surgery, get donated eyes and wake up to have a murderer's eyes. He's hardly trying to immortalize or celebrate a murderer.
so exciting at the time..as we only had the usuall disco crap and the likes of tony blackburn dave lee travis noel edmunds..they would never play punk on their radio shows...i dont forget
In case you don't know. Back in 76/77 in The U.S.A Gary Gilmore a serial no good law breaker and eventual murderer was on death row. His Lawyers were trying to stop the excecution but Gilmore wasn't having it. He said (paraphrase)"Its been sanctioned that I die and I accept that...butt out!!" He was subsequently excecuted by electric chair and he donated his body to science...hence "Gary Gilmore's Eyes"

i remember it at the time but it is nothing special in retrospect, just another punk song, i guess it's true of all generations that they look back with love at what they remeber from their day...it's good but, it is what it is & that's all it is
absolutely brilliant!!!

I'm assuming you are younger than 30. It was not so much about lyrics than the music, back then. Your generation's lyrics are no better.

Actually, if he was electric chaired his eyes wouldn't be much good. Unless served on toast. I think he was shot!!!

They don't write 'em like that any more.
Almost twenty years before a marketing exercise sometimes absurdly referred to as "Britpop".
