  • I was addicted to this game many years ago. Great use of polygon graphics which didn't appear to run too slow on the C64. I remember the glowing Zzap64 review where they refused to give it a final overall score telling us that it's too different a game to warrant a rating. In hindsight it deserved a solid 97& gold medal. Again great video, but again, shit gameplay from Steve. Love it lol.

  • I love the Blue screen of death look alike after you die.

  • Legendary game, legendary crap player, YEAH!

    Sounds like a good quote.

The game, I don't know, I never played it.

  • Cheers Steve, I was always intruiged by this game back in the day, but never had the feintest idea what it was about. Screen shots on the back of the cassette box only served to confuse me. I also avoided it because the BBC Micro version was supposed to be a bit pants.

  • @ForViewingOnly I was under the impression that the beeb version was actually better, having a faster processor and suchlike. I don't have it though, so can't be sure.

  • @SteveBenway You might be right Steve, mine is a 30 year old memory of reading a review in something like The Micro User magazine, but old age means that some memories are getting a bit fuzzy! I just found a video of The Sentinel on the Beeb and it doesn't look bad considering it had half the memory of the C64.

  • @ForViewingOnly That's just typical ignorance when it comes to the Acorn systems. watch?v=2hwjBEJkGW4 The game is pretty much identical on the BBC B, albeit with a bit faster scrolling.

  • Wowee, that was really cool. I don't think I'd play it myself, but I'd definitely watch. Like I just did. :D

  • No no.... you need to punch the trees. You better build a shelter soon dude... I think I heard a creeper.

  • @RetroRoadshow Hahaha! :D

  • I also didn't play this game back in the day, although I've remember the great reviews and praise it got. I guess it didn't quite fit my mindset back then, but I could see myself playing it now...if I had more time and patience. In anything, this is unique and interesting game and at least for that I'd give chance to play it. Again, thank you for the video, Steve. I do really appreciate it!

  • Interesting, but I would never have figured it out as a kid. lol

  • Very good video mate keep them coming

  • I had it back in the day, remember being overwhelmed and giving up haha

  • Minecraft in early development

  • ww.youtube.com/watch?v=dLMuv5dc-rQ

  • That's bizzare as fuck.

  • Wow, i didn't think the scrolling in this would be so seamless and super smooth on the C64, this is impressive.

  • We need the classic Judas Priest song of the same name as the intro music I think! I remember spending a lot of money on complex games like this, and only every loading them once and then returning to my quick fix arcade action or sports games! :-D

  • Another excellent vid from the world's worst player! :-D

Like you, I heard that this game is a classic yet I've never played it! It really does look like a game that needs plenty of time and practice though!

  • woah! not what i expected at all! not totally sure if i like it but i bet if you knew exactly what you were doing then it'd be great, and for the time it must have been a very unique experience.

I love how when you die you're slowly dissolved

definitely interested in trying this out for myself sometime (took me long enough to realize you can't move (other than into other robot shells) i think that "whump" noise is the sentinel turning round a step but god knows how you know where he's looking

  • I have a fever baby, and it requires more Moose! The music in this game is pretty good.

  • Hmm...not overly taken by this one. I admit, it's quite a cool concept but I'm not really sure whether it'd hold my attention for very long. :(

Nevertheless: good SWILL and excellent legendary closing comment! :D

  • very interesting patience required me thinks

  • Awesome, just awesome.lol

  • Great idea for a game. The BBC Micro version was much faster. I imagine the Amiga/Atari ST ones were even better again.

Geoff Crammond is a clever bloke.

  • Now that was something different... Perhaps a bit clunky controls but the game seems very unique. Besides you got to love 8-bit 3d games.

  • Great game. I tried a playstation version of this a few years back and really liked it. This version looks fantastic. The sparse graphics add to the atmosphere. That game over sequence is haunting, by the way.

  • Crikey that game looks complicated. It definitely has a mean streak. I suppose it's just one of those games you need to get completely absorbed in to get anywhere, but it's not helping itself out by killing you so quickly. Nice to see some C64 reviews.

  • Nah, you're not crap, Steve. You da man!!! Nice vid too, BTW. ;-)

  • I never had this on my real C64, I only tried it out years later, in an emulator. Though not having any instructions or any idea what to do, I gave up very quickly :o

Looks like a really interesting and original game!

  • More Commodore 64 madness! I love it, as it takes me back to my youth! I have a weak spot for this system, especially the SID chip!

Thanks a lot for sharing. Kind regards, Ronald.

  • Great game. I love the commodore 64.

  • Loved this game. I watched my dad play this for hours and I still never really understood how he did. Thanks for the flashback.

  • I bought the PS1 sequel to this game a few weeks ago.

  • @LarryBundyJr

    is it any good?

  • @LarryBundyJr What's it like?

  • Thanks Steve you have reminded me how to play this ! I am amazed tbh.!! Cheers

  • This Game was superb and I was great at it, in its day. I can't bloody get my head round it when \I tried recently , so I am hoping I will learn something from this vid!

  • God, I really loved this game... There are 10,000 levels, Steve - you have quite a way to go :)

  • This may be a classic to some,it looks quite nice but deadly dull from a gaming experience.

  • I never could work this game out, but I DO remember Pacers !! For anyone that doesn't, they were like Opal Fruits (or Starburst, you're a youngster), but white with green stripes. Spearmint flavour... and Peanut Treets were bigger and nicer than peanut M&M's, so erm.. oh and Snickers were called Marathon.. and chicken tasted like chicken, but black and white. Erm..

  • @mathowlett See... you're talking my language, as usual :)

  • @SteveBenway Great / twisted / broken minds..... ;-)

  • The 3D on that is very smooth especially considering it's running on C64. I played this game once but didn't have the instructions so I hadn't a clue what the hell I was supposed to do!

  • I've known this is highly regarded but never got around to work out the controls and play it either. For some reason it reminds me of Lord of the Rings with the eye of Sauron forever watchful.

  • Oooh, this is an incredible game. One of the first that freaked me out when the Sentinel got me in his sights. I think it was the thought of "being absorbed".. ugh.

He is continually rotating around, which he why he got you after a while.

This is due a remake on something, maybe an augmented reality game, creating boulders and robots on your coffee table to get the Sentinel on top of your telly.

  • Thank God! I was bored stupid when I got home from work, but you saved the day brother! This game looks strange, yet alluring! Graphically intense for the commodore 64. Love the videos Steve!
