and he's not "checking the scratch." what does that even mean? his hand was already moving like that in the previous part where there were no scratches.

The video was recorded in beat#1, which means you can play 3y3s in one more extra stage only (in hard mode and non-random).

Therefore, in order to get a high score, he should give up all the scratches in the beginning (quite impossible to scratch in 2p and non-random).
