  • Good work, sir. A keeper!

  • I recall when all the police boxes in Edinburgh (about 80 odd) had these on their roofs. One morning around 20 years ago (at about 03:00 !) they all bloody went off. Remember it to this day. The local paper next day said there was 'a fault' which caused a false alarm !

Sadly they were all scrapped a few years ago.....

  • wow that would sound so kewl. it would annoy the neighbors a lot. i once connected an air horn to an air compressor and my 80 yo neighber reved the shit out of me cos i had it on for like 1 minute.

say, how loud are we talking about with these like how many decibels and at what distance from the machine.

  • According to my 1938 Manual for this,it is

140db and audible for 4 miles in still air.

  • great sound, i like it :). though it winds up pretty long.

  • must...find...one!

  • Believe me, if you ran one of these things in you back garden the police would be round in about one minute and you WOULD be arrested. As i said in my last comment, the noise is absolutely fucking ridiculous and you cannot even imagine how loud these things are until you have been standing at the bottom of the pole when one went off. Totally fucking unbeliveable racket. I want one!!!!!!!!

  • Standing six feet away with ear defenders on

    still made my ears rattle.

  • I am not surprised!! I worry about the neighbours if i run one of my little industrial engines, one of these things would upset everyone for about a mile around!!! I WANT ONE!!!!!

  • Yeah, arrested for breach of the peace !

  • @caerleon87 you can't be arrested, only fined.

  • @bait28 How you figure that one out???? To be fined, you would have first, to be arrested, charged, and bailed to appear in court!!!!!

  • @caerleon87 thats not the same thing. our city sends a letter describing the code broken and the a fee which you mail a check or cash to pay.

  • @bait28 Ahhh, you are not in england...Here the police would take a very dim view...The local council also would have teh power to confiscate the siren... It is no fun living in britain......!!

  • @caerleon87 yeah, i forgot that part. lol. here i can even set my thunderbolt off as long as i do it with the cities(if they set thiers off, i can set mine off)

  • Until about the early 1980's the uk's siren system was still up and running. They used to test them quite often, there were about three of these things mounted on poles within about three quarters of a mile from my house. I was right next to one of them when they tested it one day. Now there is loud, fucking loud, and absolutely fucking ridiculous, and these things are louder than that, it is so loud that it would be impossible to stand by the thing without hands firmly clamped to ears!!!!!

  • What are the blades that rotate made out of? Is it possible to end the wind down prematurely by, say, sticking a foot in there?

  • The thoughts of frog and kenwood blender

    come to mind!

    and the rotors are ally.

  • how many rpms do the rotors get in fll attack mode?? 12,000 or less? you should hook up a wankel engine to this and see what happens

  • 2750 Rpm

  • damn thought it would be more... :(

  • Ha that's hilarious man!! You guys are crazy lol. That was getting close to what the WW2 carter nelson's used to sound like! Are you gonna try and crank it at full speed and authentically replicate what it used to sound like? That would be gold, but surely illegal, no? You'll have people nearby running for shovels and digging shelters in their gardens!!

  • yeah some of the sirens are tested at one meter. that could be at least 115 to 120 dbs at 100'.

  • how loud in decibles are these sirens at 100 feet? it seems so similar to the fed 2t22 which is 115 dbs at 100'.

  • According to the book which does not give you the distance in relation to the db it just states

that on a good day in still air the siren can be heard

4 miles away,The modern version of this is 139db.

  • @crownhill 139 at 10'. should be around 11* at 100ft(* meaning i don't know the number)

  • has the same pitch quality as the federal 2t22. long live british and american mechanical sirens!!!

  • Keep em rolling

  • I like it! You just can't beat the haunting minor-third wail of this granddaddy of all air raid sirens. -Adam

  • I am looking forward to hearing the rise and fall, I can't remember, was the long pitch for an air raid, and the rise and fall and all clear ?

  • Rise and fall alert single tone all clear

  • and i think we all need to see a longer video,LET IT RIP :-)

  • Once the genny is sorted i have built a period siren

base with a little pitched roof (how qaint)as per snow hill police station 1938,and want to sound on May 10 anniversary of the heaviest luftwaffe raid on London.

  • and was the fork lift necessary to lift it?

  • No Two of us lifted in and out the van and i have even helped lift one up a flight of stairs.

    They weigh 312lbs.

  • that is excellent,i may be getting one of these coming my way,may i ask how you managed to source the full voltage to run it correctly

  • This is our local Electical Rewinders.

He apreciates older electical things and didnt have to be asked twice to do the first running tests.

incidently he is building me a 15kva tranny just to start the siren as my genny is strugling.

  • Great video. No sirens sound better than these. Now, to get one of them shipped to the United States . . .

  • Good luck with finding one

  • my mates father has a few, some restored and some not,i hope to be viewing this week and to discuss prices but none of us are sure what they go for,if you notice ebay they are always varied prices

  • That sounds good, prices can vary a lot obviously based on condition and the fact that everything to do with them is heavy duty. The genny is heavier than the siren. I am always on the look out for another good example to restore and maybe run them together,as the full affect was being surrounded by rise and fall tones. Let me know how you get on

  • I got a Bargain for mine! It was made in 1936 and I got it for £157! Most ebay sirens go for £300+

  • IT'S ALIVE! Gr8 job well worth the w8 :)

  • Goosebumps! GOOSEBUMPS!

Nice videos there mate! Have fun :P

  • KEEP EM ROLLING

  • Sounds even better with Where do the children play - Cat Stevens :)

  • Ouch! How loud is it in person?

  • Dan even with ear defenders on i still had to move out the way but the sound drifted all over the place and it sounded so gooood
