The first piano sonata is the most gorgeous piano music American of last century along with Copland's variations in my mind. God, he wrote many bigger sympnonies.
I've always appreciated Roger Sessions music, from, the early "The Black Maskers" and the Second Symphony. This is tough no-nonsense music but is beautiful and American. Needs to be heard; he's one of our master composers. I think I could not compose this way but I am immensely affected by it even so.
I studied counterpoint in college with a student of his, Kenneth Frazelle (also quite a composer).. never actually enjoyed listening to any of Sessions' music until recently, but I adore this Symphony (and the performance)! Nice visualisations as well..
Contrived garbage.

Marvellous. Beautiful. Fantastic. This music deserves to be performed as often as any Mahler symphony imo!
