using the penny trick is what is considered a band-aid fix. temporary, at best. if your reflow didn't work, and the penny trick did, than your reflow didn't work and do it again. make sure you know what temperatures are needed for a proper reflow. And make sure you know which chips you need to heat up for the specific error (hana and gpu mainly for e74).

I dont recomend that temporary mod, the E74 message error will dissapear but you will have, soon or later, a green glitch on the screen who is going to annoy you to the core. That aint good for the (h)Ana physical integrity as well. Do something to stop the heat emissions from GPU or/and stop that heat from running above Ana - wich is very weird from a microsoft technician to not do so - In the end, everything is just temporary
Rebal with another hAna might solve but if you dont have a fresh and revolutionary idea to cool this pile of crap down, even that, the rebal, will be also temporary as any mod is.
Omg! After doing several fixes, like the x-clamp and penny trick, this one actually worked! I taped the pennies together and put the case together making sure it was really tight to apply the pressure on the (H)ANA chip and it works perfectly now! Thank you!
@dying2l The E74 1022 error is usually the GPU and the h/ana chip. If you perform the x clamp mod and it comes back, you know it's in your ana chip. Sometimes you can easily tell by putting pressure on the h/ana chip and if it works, you know its a solder problem.
I have repaired a few 360s . The stack is coins wrapped in tape.. Aka a getto and bad Heatsink. Pressing the chip down is to try and make it have contact with the broken solder points. The RROD will come back and so will the E74. Reflow is always the best fix. Fixing a 360 will last weeks or if you are lucky months. Depends on the usage (hours a day) of the 360
Hang on, just read the info - reballing a GPU chip without the grid? That's gonna be very difficult (of course you can make one yourself but if it's your first time it's likely you're going to tear the GPU apart getting it off or mess up the reball).

@smylyaustin96 this happened to me too. check to see if the power brick/source/supply is making some noise, like sounds like it usually does. If it isn't, try to use another power supply for the xbox, then continue with the fix
Funny....I have fixed PS3 all week. XBOX360 owners don't let Sony's failure rate fool you, it's much higher than they report. Oh by the way I love their failure rate has made me over 1k this week re-flowing their systems too! If your PS3 has not failed yet....it will, then you can send it to Sony for a $150 fix and a 90 day warranty or I'll do it for $50 cheaper....either way your PS3 is no better than the 360! I love both of them! They keep me in business, and paying off my house! :)
can anyone tell me how to sort out the four red rings of death please as i've done the 8 penny trick and put heat glue on the processing chips. I've done this before and let the xbox overheat resulting in a fixed xbox but this 3rd one just isn't having it. cheers
@jer6900 Four red LED's mean there is either a problem with you component cable or there is a faulty connection the back of the xbox, hope this helps! P.S try replacing your component/ av cable

If you knew anything about solder you would know that a hair dryer will not "losen" it up. Solder has to reach a certain temp then it liquifies untill it cools down. A hair dryer will not get it hot enough to do anything. If you truely want to reflow a chip's solder you have to get the chip/solder hot enough to melt the solder... Heat gun is a cheap mans option and it will work fine if you know what you are doing. Hair dryers will not work to reflow solder no matter how long you leave it on.

I tried this and it worked. I used 11 Pennies and wrapped them in electrical tape. Worked like a charm for me. However, I did also use Arctic Silver 5 thermal compound on the GPU and CPU after cleaning all the old shit off first.
cool solution. i've never had e74.. but i always have e71!! and i cannot find any solutions.. and no the whole clearing cache/sync button will not work for me. i cant boot to dash either. :(
The ANA/HANA chip has nothing to do with the red light error. Even light pressure on the chip is enough to briefly cause a GPU cold solder join to make contact.
IT WORKS. I don't know for how long, but it works. I was playing nfs shift and i got some bad image and after that the E74. Damn! Now, after this, it works. I Hope it stays that way...
hey i have a no hdmi it has never died of rrod only a dvd drive replacement :) but its started freezing so i am waiting for my xclamp repair kit in hopes it will work my theory is that my thermal paste has dried out :)
@bbebe09 How old is you're xbox 360 is it under 3years? report it to microsoft as rrod even if it doesnt have it and they will replace the board and dvd drive with the latest chipset
look on the back of your xbox 360 console and check the manufactor date if its older than 3years old then ur out of luck unless you're willing to open the whole console do apply the x-clamp fix
i used the method at llama i worked fine for a few months but know after playing for about 5-10 min my xbox gets super hot from the bottom and on the screen everything morphs into lines and dots and then it just gives me the 1 light, i reflow the gpu but the process repeats itself :( what do i do now?

@R0bertCc i mod stuff to man. and i own all 3 of the systems that are now. so you need to cool your jets kemosabe. you're not as tough as you make yourself sound just because you have an xbox.
each system has its pros and cons. and all of them are equal in my opinion, i'm unbiased. BUT the one that most of my friends have is ps3 so i'll choose that one over xbox because if i want to play with my friends thats the one i need to use. not to mention free online.

@shawnpg really wow thats cool, i did one up on that i made sure it will never happen in my 360 by putting a heat sink on it to release some heat from the chip, and i also updated my fans to 12v and it runs better than good! but ya good luck i hate dealing with Microsoft.. i really dont like how they think its ok to charge us a new xbox... and dick us around.

I need some advice. As soon as I turn on my rrod console, it goes straight to rrod. It doesn't turn on or even attempt to. I have put thermal paste over the gpu thingy. If anybody has any suggestion, pm me please. Thanks and also please sub to my Youtube.

@smylyaustin96 this happened to me too. check to see if the power brick/source/supply is making some noise, like sounds like it usually does. If it isn't, try to use another power supply for the xbox, then continue with the fix

Funny....I have fixed PS3 all week. XBOX360 owners don't let Sony's failure rate fool you, it's much higher than they report. Oh by the way I love their failure rate has made me over 1k this week re-flowing their systems too! If your PS3 has not failed yet....it will, then you can send it to Sony for a $150 fix and a 90 day warranty or I'll do it for $50 cheaper....either way your PS3 is no better than the 360! I love both of them! They keep me in business, and paying off my house! :)

can anyone tell me how to sort out the four red rings of death please as i've done the 8 penny trick and put heat glue on the processing chips. I've done this before and let the xbox overheat resulting in a fixed xbox but this 3rd one just isn't having it. cheers

@jer6900 Four red LED's mean there is either a problem with you component cable or there is a faulty connection the back of the xbox, hope this helps! P.S try replacing your component/ av cable

If you knew anything about solder you would know that a hair dryer will not "losen" it up. Solder has to reach a certain temp then it liquifies untill it cools down. A hair dryer will not get it hot enough to do anything. If you truely want to reflow a chip's solder you have to get the chip/solder hot enough to melt the solder... Heat gun is a cheap mans option and it will work fine if you know what you are doing. Hair dryers will not work to reflow solder no matter how long you leave it on.

I tried this and it worked. I used 11 Pennies and wrapped them in electrical tape. Worked like a charm for me. However, I did also use Arctic Silver 5 thermal compound on the GPU and CPU after cleaning all the old shit off first.

The ANA/HANA chip has nothing to do with the red light error. Even light pressure on the chip is enough to briefly cause a GPU cold solder join to make contact.

hey i have a no hdmi it has never died of rrod only a dvd drive replacement :) but its started freezing so i am waiting for my xclamp repair kit in hopes it will work my theory is that my thermal paste has dried out :)

Nope the thermal paste is fine the solder has started to go get it x-clamped properly and it should be fine for about a year

@bbebe09 How old is you're xbox 360 is it under 3years? report it to microsoft as rrod even if it doesnt have it and they will replace the board and dvd drive with the latest chipset

look on the back of your xbox 360 console and check the manufactor date if its older than 3years old then ur out of luck unless you're willing to open the whole console do apply the x-clamp fix

i used the method at llama i worked fine for a few months but know after playing for about 5-10 min my xbox gets super hot from the bottom and on the screen everything morphs into lines and dots and then it just gives me the 1 light, i reflow the gpu but the process repeats itself :( what do i do now?

Looks like you need to do a reflow on you're xbox 360 make sure you do it properly
