I've just read pertinent information from a feature by Michael Eisen titled "Monday Morning Notebook." Eisen said the NFL issued a statement saying that interference should have been called on the 49ers. That would have meant offsetting penalties, requiring the down to be replayed despite the fact that time had expired. The Giants should have had another opportunity to try and win the game. Instead there was only the offensive penalty on New York, allowing the game to end.

@nomore1940 How can u possibly blame any player on offense for what happened in this game? The offense was shreading the Niners for 3 quarters. It was the defense that couldnt make a play. It is a simple minded fan that looks at ONE catch that made in a game with 77 total points scored. Nobody play any defense worth a damn all day.

@gfscarface13, dude, learn your football. Holding happens on EVERY PLAY. If the officials call it EVERY TIME, offenses would just move backwards and no one would score at all. Holding is ONLY supposed to be called when it's obvious AND directly relevant to the result of the play.

Numbers in the 50's, 60's and 70's are generally ineligible as receivers. While he was lined up in an eligible position, because of his number, he would have to notify the ref on every play that he was going to be eligible. Otherwise, he stays ineligible because of his number.

Also, there were other linemen who had crossed the line of scrimmage before the pass. Since some/all of them were ineligible, this is illegal, and it no longer matters if the attempted receiver was eligible or not.

There were still other ineligible linemen down field, so that becomes irrelevant. Offensive linemen aren't supposed to cross the line on a passing play. There is still a penalty on the offense.

I never said whether he was eligible, just explained that it was more difficult to be eligible than just line up in the right spot. I didn't see anything on the video about him checking in to make a final judgment, but it wouldn't surprise me if it's standard in the NFL in case something happens.
