This film has a cold, sparse and melancholy quality throughout. If you don't mind a slow-paced film that will leave you feeling slightly numb, I would recommend it, because the performances from all involved are excellent. For me, it's an exploration of an emotionally distant father and his children, who simultaneously resent and revere him, seeking his acceptance but challenging his paternal status.

There are lots of religious references, as well as in his other movie, "The Banishment". The movie is much deeper than it might seem at first view.

*SPOILER ALERT!!!!* I'm not a religious person at all, but this movie has a LOT of religious refrences, probably far more than I'd be able to pick up on. Anyway, heres a few. When the boys run up stairs after they see there dad, they go to an old bible, flick through it and stop at the page where there dads photo is, what image of the bible is the photo on? Abraham about to kill his son Isaac, but is being prevented by an angel! Remind you of any part in this movie? The father about to kill

Andrey but being prevented (stopped) by Ivan! When the boys see there dad for the first time, his lying out on the bed with silk sheets around him, now, type in 'lamentation over the dead christ' into google images and see if it reminds you of anything!! ;o) Also, does the supper that the family have bear any resemblance to the 'last supper'?? Well, there something for you to think about.

Finally, I think that was a kind of enlightment like (we)humans live our lives until its end to see the bright lights and go away forever. By this I mean that both the dad and the brothers find out the truth of the enigma they had in their lives.

When the young brother runs away to the tower after the big fight, the father realizes what he had done by abandon them and at the same time when the father dies, they open their eyes and realizes he had died in their hearts 12 years ago

I think the house where he digs out the box was either his home where he grew up or where he was trapped all those years, he wanted to show them why he went away.

Clutzy, I totally agree with you, it is not my favorite movie BUT it is definately one of the best movies I ever seen.

In my personal point of view, I think that the box is very significant, but when they are camping the father says that he will not eat fish because "Once, he had enough"(because of a war, or he was a prisioner).

I adored this film! It is truly a one of the greatest foreign films I've seen. I love Vladimir Garin and Ivan Dobronravov as actors, and I was so sad when I heard Garin had died at the age of 16. That's my age; I couldn't imagine leaving the world so early. By the way, the subtitles on this clip aren't right. They aren't saying "chicken", they're saying "coward" and later on "pig". And Ivan doesn't say "You idiot/jerk!" He says, "Scum!"

It was one of the good movies that year and I was surprised it actually won the Golden Globe award for best foreign movie of the year. I couldn't possibly figure out the name of this song being played in this segment; does anyone know?

The music is by Andrey Dergatchev; the song is titled simply "Titles - Run" on the OST :)

It's probably only available on the soundtrack since the music was done specifically for the film :)

I think that it was left up to everyone to guess who the father was in fact. It is much more mysterious then. I like it that way ;)

I think the father's love was inside those box. He had no time to opened his love and show it to sons.

This is a symbolism i think.

apparently, the original script had a lot of the detail left in, including what was in the box.

Well, the original script said that the box contained a lot of money, and father, upon digging it out, went off to America with his sons. No kidding.
