  • well im bord im not doing it

  • Not getting vmware i dont have 16 GIGS

  • @happymatt072284093 Ok, then, good luck.

  • what is the latest verson liunix i should install

  • @Hi675445 Any recent version, but use VMWare workstation, VMWare Fusion or VirtualBox rather than Virtual PC

  • thanx

  • the base system installation failed

    what to do?

  • @xXDJXYCX98Xx See one of my newer vids and try either VirtualBox or one of the VMWare products instead of VirtualPC

  • ohhh lol

  • ?

what happened when it just got cutof??

  • It means you need to watch part 3.

  • amazing vid really helps

  • thx

  • When it gets to the part at 8:00 when I have to put in my username and password, it doesn't let me put in my password.

  • The password is not echoed on the screen even with *'s. Just type it in and press enter.

  • Thank you for helping.

  • sameeeee

  • @1337scape the same happened to me

  • uve got a great voice...

  • TIP:

-try to talk more consistant, i got my hand on the volume the whole time because u talk quiet, then u talk normal, and u go between the 2.

  • i typed in bga=0x314 but when i boot and press alt ctrl and f1 it shows a messed up ugly screen can someone help me with this?

  • try vga=0x314

  • That's Ubuntu (and linux in general) working at it's best.

Exactly why Linux is terrible. Embarrassingly crappy actually.

  • Don't blame Linux for Microsoft's failure to make VirtualPC all it could be.

  • I'm not talking about Ubuntu in general, not just running it virtually.

I've had a terrible time with Ubuntu...and every other distro as well. Even simple things that osx and every version of windows EVER has done just fine. Such as...recognizing new hardware, and not failing during installation because of new hardware.

  • If you need to run Linux virtually in production or for serious experimentation, invest in VMWare workstation, or bring up the server product on VMWare ESX. But understand the limitations of virtualization. Since Linux will run on an old flea-market box just fine, it may make more sense to install Linux on a real machine depending on what you are doing.

  • Thank Very Much Bruce

Awesome video clips - very comprehensive!

    Phuc Le

  • WOW great vids, very clear and helpful thanx heaps

    5 stars =]

  • hello im a novice but im curios about Linux especially ubuntu beryl, i wonder if you could assist me on installation. im currently installing it now i dont know if im doing it correctly. i dont care if i lost all my file, so long as i could get up linux ubuntu beryl.

  • NVM it works thanks.

  • Best tutorial ever!

  • Linux FTW

  • thanks for the tutorial 5 stars.

  • Shit I got a virus! Thank god my anti virus BLOCKED IT!

  • ok i try to login at the text login, but i type my user name then i cant type my password! what is wrong?

  • Perhaps you inadvertently selected the OEM install option? No fix for that but to redo.

  • dag, ok well thanks anyway

  • I made sure it was text install and Im getting the same problem is there any fix?

  • Sorry I'll pass on part 2. I'd love to try Linux, but if this ballyoo is required then im afraid its beyond me.

    Thanks anyway.

  • I installed ubuntu fine. But when I start it up there are green lines through the screen when it is in the dos style start up thing. Then when it's on the log in screen it's to big for my monitor and the colours are completely screwed up. Help?

  • You need to follow the instructions exactly to use the alternate ISO installation file and adjust the color depth parameter. The video series discusses how to do this. Or, review my newer series using vmware instead of virtual pc, which doesn't have the colordepth issue.

  • um ok... i used my login... it was KiaX100000 but in the install i clicked continue. it changed to kiax100000. when i put that in it wont let me put in my password. i tried both ways and still says incorrect host? help!

  • The IP address is either the same as the host's IP address (NAT configuration), or another IP address generated from a static pool or from DHCP. On a home network, the IP address anyone sees is the IP address of your router/modem regardless of how many PCs or virtual machines you have behind your firewall.

  • will ubuntu be any faster when installed in virtual pc???

  • No, probably slower.

  • won't give you permission to do what? If you have forgotten the sudo user's password, the easiest thing at this point is to create a new virtual machine. You might want to look at my newer videos using vmware instaead of virtual pc. It's a much simpler install.

  • HALP i did vga but i get orange screen on alt ctrl and f1

  • Please see the updated videos showing how to do this in vmware using the current versions of Ubuntu.

  • AHH i did vga-0x314

I get a orange screen HALP MEEEE

  • its vga=0x314. you used a dash instead of an equal sign.

  • thanks for the help on virtual pc i really needed it!!!lol

  • what is command at 8:40

  • sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf

  • tnx

  • what must type by username@computername $ ?? i dont understand you and i can not see it!??

  • You have to first click in the window to capture the mouse and keyboard. If the mouse isn't captured, then it may be you are using a newer version than 6.10. See my set of updated videos on installing later versions in vmware.

  • what is command at 8:40

  • what is vmware

  • i got it installed thanks what do u do AFTER U PREE ESC

  • view part 3

  • can you give me the link to download the alternet cd (iso file)

  • Can't post links in comments but if you google ubuntu 6.10 download it will be first result. I would recommend you take a look at my new videos using vmware server (free) and current releases of Ubuntu, however.

  • google

    ubuntu

then just select the first page

  • i did everything you told me to do but when i had to press the esc key it would not work and continued the count down

  • Just reboot the virtual machine and keep trying. You need to click in the window to make sure the keyboard and mouse are captured.

You may want to review the newer videos showing how to do this in vmware server. That will run tne newest versions of Ubuntu without having to make all the modifications for video problems that occur under virtual pc.

  • BUG: soft lockup detected on CPU#0

    WHAT DO I DO?!

  • It doesn't sound like something you should get in virtual pc -- usually it has to do with a particular Intel wireless card driver, and even if your computer has one, virtual pc emulates a standard wired ethernet card. So, if you are actually installing in vpc, then you might try posting into one of the ubuntu forums to see if anyone can help. I've seen a couple of posts that indicate it also might be a problem with one of the memory chips. Otherwise, this installation guide won't help much.

  • ok, when i do the ctrl+alt+f1 and i type in my user, press enter, it skips over my password space

  • it takes so long to install the base system!

  • Why is the password line disabled, I can't write anything and keep typing in Username and it says "login failed"

  • i have the he same problem how do i fix that? PLZ RESPOND

  • It means you selected the oem install. Note that these instruction have been superceded. See the new video Install Ubuntu Desktop in VMWare Server. If you want to proceed with this set of instructions, use the altenrate install disk as recommended and do not select OEM install.

  • Well the file i downloaded was exactly this "ubuntu-6.10-alternate-i386.iso" so i don't what happened

any other help would be appreciated thanks.

  • OK just don't select OEM install. Follow the screen instructions from the beginning. Or, try the install of the latest version in vmware server as described in the newer series.

  • i cant type my name (2:07)

  • lol soz

the part u sed to type in was - sudo nano /ect/X11/xorg.comf

but wen i press enter it comes up with a blank screen with the commands at the bottom, and wen i press ctrl+w it says seach - so i enter defaultdepth and press enter and it says not found

  • sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf

  • hey

can u tell me wat the code is that u type in at the part after you login,

you say it is - sudo mano /ect/X11/xorg.comf

is that right or not ??

    cheers love the vids

  • E T C as in etcetera

  • yea the part before it finishes is taking 4eva o well i cant wait for this to be complete im sure it will be worth it :)

  • i cant get it to work on vista =(

  • I have tested it on Vista extensively (it's my primary windows laptop OS) and there are no incompatibilities assuming the specific ubuntu version is used as stated and instructions are followed. If you have a particular problem, post it. When the next iteration comes out (the upcoming version is 8.04) I'll redo the set to update it as there are some differences with the newest revs. That should be sometime in the next month or so.

  • i mean it goes to the part where it has the menu whitch asks u where the files are and i select the cd drive and it sais no files where found i used a virtual disk but i tried to use a real disk and it sias the same thing (how do u get file sharing to work??)

  • If you want to use a physical CD, you need to actually burn the ISO image to it using special software, not just copy the iso to the cd. Otherwise, you select CD from the menu at the top and browse to select the ISO file you have downloaded. In general, you need to use an ftp application to share files between the host and virtual machine, and that only works once the virtual machine is completely configured and working.

  • omg i have all the software to make a phisical cd!!!!! it just dosnt like me i uninstalled it!!!!

  • i have a question so lets say i download some thing and theres a virus in it would it only damage the virtual drive or my whole computer, just wondering out of curiosity not really that worried about that happening

  • It would only infect the vm. Under certain circumstances, it's posible to share files between the host and the vm, so if the host and vm were the same OS (e.g. both running Windows), I suppose there is a chance of cross infection.

  • Useful but SO SLOOOOOOW

  • It's how long it taaaaakkkkeeess!

  • thank you anyway it help me a lot

  • bruce, i downloaded the exact ISO file you directed in youre videos, and it still is not working. im not using my physical drive.

  • I'm not sure then, this is usually a hardware error. Try rebooting from the iso image and select the check disk for defects option to make sure there isn't a problem there.

  • on my vpc it says that "the installer cannot figure out how to install the base system. no installable cd-rom was found and no valid mirror was configured"

  • It sounds like you are trying to use an actual CD or DVD. You should use the iso file only per the directions in part 1 and not involve your physical cd drive. you do not need to burn or acquire a physical CD.

  • Oh and when i keep pressing enter to get past the screen resolution part it locks up at 6% and says its unpacking xserver-xorg

  • Give it time. Sometimes, it does appear to hang. You can usually see the HD or CD light on the icon in the bottom left of the VPC screen blink now and then if it is not hung.

  • Hey awesome tutorial. uhmmm, whenever i get to the point where it asks me to pick the screen resolution, and you say to just hit enter, it will keep asking me to pick it until eventually it locks up on me. any advice would do thanks!! i really wish i could get through the whole setup and it seems youre a great teacher.

  • Make sure 1024x768, 600x800 and 640x480 are checked, then tab to the continue prompt and press enter.

  • now i am gonna make ubuntu tutorials because no one ever makes ubuntu tutorials u really have to mess around with ubuntu for a while before you really get the hang of it

  • OMG thanx ubuntu runs so smooth even on virtual pc! thank you

  • wdoes the virtual pc suck up mu disk space?

why do my hard disk suddenly said low disk space????!??! and the virtual pc said my C: drive which i put the virtual hard disk in has 98mb space left so it cant continue

  • The virtual machine will take up at least a couple of gigabytes.

  • if i have linux as my main OS can i install virtual pc on linux to run windows on so i can play my games?

  • i did this and when it came to the user-name and password, my screen turns black :S

  • that's the screen saver; just press any key to continue.

  • great tutorial, but this guys voice is very monotone.

  • I KINDA LIKE HIS VOICE ITS WEIRD

  • what's popularity-contest? I just saw it during installation.

  • OK, oddly enough, I just used fdisk (Using Win98 Boot disk) to delete everything, and it works. Well, I am still on 6%, though.

  • For some reason, my hard drive icon first, gets a little red light next to it, instead of green, and second, it Fails Installing the base system! can anybody help? Oh yeah, I have xubuntu, and it stops at 6%

  • Those are the read and write indicators. Does it actually fail, or just seem to hang? I've seen it spend a very long time at the 6% mark. Give it a half hour anyway.

  • OK, It got past 6%, but now, bash won't extract! I am running two versions, 6.10 and 7.10, and only 7.10 gets this problem!

  • 7.10 has some problems with Virtual PC. See below for the i8042.noloop directive, or try VMWare server (free) instead of VPC

  • When i get to the Ctrl Alt F1 part, the virtual computer just refuses to do anything.

  • Probably means there's a problem with what you're putting into the line in the grub menu. It's vga=0x314 and you might also need to add i8042.noloop to get the mouse to work.

  • thanks i got it working, i had put Ega not Vga, misheard you sorry

  • I got up to the part where you type sudo mamo /etc/X11/xorg.conf and it says sudo: mamo: command not found. Am I doing something wrong?

  • sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf

  • I got up to pressing the ESC button, but it wouldn't work. Is it because of the language of the keyboards etc, is anyone else having this problem? i have 2007 virtual pc and a UK Keyboard. thanks.

  • do i have to use the text installer?

  • For the versions specified, you need to use the procedures specified.

  • Um... What are the other choices instead of erase entire hard disk? I get nervous with that kinda stuff...

  • None, but as long as you are in Virtual PC, all you doing is prepping a file on your hard disk that will emulate a drive.

  • But if the program bugs...?

  • It won't. As long as you are in the virtual pc window, your real system is isolated from the virtual machine.

  • You know... to be honest, I am kinda scared to do this. I know, I sound like a wimp, but I have 0% experience in this kinda stuff and I am nervous I might mess something up so I will just stick with windows and (hopefully when I get enough money) go mac.

  • Dude ive done this before but when VmWare became server-only i immediately found this tutorial and downloaded the virtual machine program. it worked on VmWare and this is pretty much no different from VmWare just its free... Im trusting this guy 100% because i know its just a file... in the first vid if you read it says your MAKING a file for the virtual HD...

    Btw nice vid

  • This looks cool!! can i run linux livecd on virtual pc? 2. has this eny effect on my defalut operation syetm? will it install the operation system on the same HDD as the deaflut operation system? 3. can it damage my defalut operation system if i chuse to install the operation system on the same HDD as my defalut operation syetm?

please answer me!! i ned help!!

  • Yes, but it sounds like you are looking at ubuntu 704 or 710 so I suggest you use vmware server, which is also free, and which works better with ubuntu. as long as you are working in the virtual environment, you should be OK with respect to your native OS.

  • VMware is not 100% free though, and it now doesnt support local virtual Pc's... which is why i swiched

  • VMWare server for windows is free, you just need to register to get a license key. Is that not working for you? Workstation and products for the mac are not free, as I understand.

  • i still dont get it

  • i pushed x=ctrl alt f1 and all i get is yellow and orange lines whats wrong here

  • It means you probably didn't get the colordepth parameter in the boot file set correctly; make sure you follow along at about 5:50 and on in part 2 to set the vga color depth.

  • i can see hes doing something but i cant tell what hes typing lol

  • All the commands are spelled out in the audio track.

  • vmware is better

  • can you make vids on how to make an operating system plz, my friends found only crappy tutorials and maybe u can make a good one?

  • mine seems to be stuck on preparing xdg-utils at 42%. I've been waiting for quite a while. I hope it goes to the next screen.

  • i started all over again and it seems to be ok now.

  • yes I installed 7.04 :S I just deleted it and i'm i'm going to install 6.10.

  • So I installed ubuntu in virtual pc 2007.

But I can use that inner cursor I click but nothing happens :S Where is the problem?I cant too anything in ubuntu.

  • Sounds like you installed 7.04 instead of 6.10 as the video recommends. You can try adding i8042.noloop to the kernel line right after the place where you added vga=0x314 (consult the video for editing details at this point). I don't know if this will be fixed in the upcoming 7.10 version or not.

  • You can also try vmware server (free but you have to register to get a license key), which doesn't seem to have the video issues that virtual pc does.

  • When I try to enter terminal mode by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1 my screen turns black, and is impossible to restore the screen w/o a reset to my comp. What am I doing wrong? Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

  • If you are using virtual PC, you shouldn't have to reset your computer. You should just be able to close the VPC window. You can try rightalt-enter in case the session is defaulting to full screen mode. That will cause teh vpc session either to go into full screen mode or come out of it. If it is locking up your whole computer, then I'm not sure what the problem is. The virtual PC program isolates the virtual machine. Perhaps it's a memory problem

  • When I boot up the distorted screen, and I press Ctrl+Alt+F1 to enter the terminal mode, I end up in a completely black screen which seemingly has no escape. What am I doing incorrectly? Is my screen resolution a possible source of error? Thoughts or tips? Thanks for your time!

  • You must interrupt the grub boot loader to add vga=0x314 to the boot line as described. Then, wait a few minutes to let it boot up completely.

  • Mr.Fulton, I did add the lines vga=0x314, and allow time for it to boot up. It eventually turns into the same screen that I've seen on your tutorial. At that point I then press the Ctrl+Alt+F1 and it goes to that black screen of death. I think what it is trying to do is change my screen resolution to something my computer can't handle (even with the code added). I am using a Tablet, so perhaps that's causing the issue? Let me know your thoughts. Thanks!

  • I've never seen that. You might run your hardware configuration by the folks in one of the ubuntu support forums, or reinstall virtual PC. VPC virtualizes a PC and isolates it from the rest of your system. Nothing that happens in the VPC machine should lock up your entire system, so I'm not sure what to tell you.

  • hey i have installed it and i have everything working perfectly except there is no sound, please help!

  • I could care less about doing this, but I love listening to him talk.

  • hahahahaha me too

  • sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf

  • Thank you

  • u should say "X"

  • yo lo escuche diciendo la X claramente, asi que no te quejes u_u

i heard him saying an X clearly, so dont complain u_u

  • ya lo se

  • i cant see the screen very well, can u write me de last code about "sudo nano /etc/..." the "capital" that what u spelled, i dont know where that button is? i know the rest, but i wanna know about that i dindt understand that "capital" or something! please help me =(
