After she spits on him - his whole demeanor changes - after the aforementioned menacing stare - and he confirms (to himself) his decision not to warn her or her husband 'freddie' of the impending assassination attempt. But - to me - it's partly her fault - she knows he has a crush on her - and she is cruel and harsh in return - and very self-righteous. She's the #1 guy's girlfriend - so she can spit on someone (especially his underling) w/o any consequences...or so she thinks...

This scene is great for so many reasons. The amazingly talented and amazingly good looking actors: Saffron Burrows and the great Paul Bettany. Paul Bettany made this movie. The menacing he can convey with only a look (stare) - whoa. But in this scene in particular -burrows' character self-righteously spits on Bettany. . What makes this so poignant is that this is the scene where he can warn her of a serious impending disaster/ambush that will change her life forever....or not. (cont....)

I honestly thought that Bettany's character was flirting with her on the off chance that he might be able to cause some ripples in her and Freddies relationship. Bettany's character believes (and rightly so) that Freddie will want 'out of the game' when the baby comes, before he's had a chance to become the true heir to Freddie's position, which is why he's so upset when he hears about the baby.

Paul Bettany is a genius. He can be charming and loveable in one film and then brilliantly menacing in the next. 'Gangster no. 1' was the first thing I saw Paul in 8 years ago when I watched it. It made me go and see 'A Beautiful Mind' and I've seen everything he's been in ever since. I never get bored of him. He's a beautiful chameleon.

Paul Bettany's black hearted role of the younger gangster was the personification of satanic evil in this film. Few compare to such a sickening degree of sadism and cruelty.

The only thing I couldn't discern was whether his evil spawned from nihilism or madness, because there are a few scenes in the film that suggest he's a madman.

My favorite onscreen villain of all time.
