Don't give up on The Blob... I know people whine about remakes, but Halloween had a huge fanbase, which of course leads to defensiveness of the series. But The Blob is just a really fun, campy movie that I really think you could pull off like no other. I remember the 80's remake shocked me as a kid, the idea of an unstoppable Blob devouring people so graphically was amazing.
