  • The best, only uses what he needs and gets this really big sound.

  • Tão simples, tão foda, Classe.

Nunca vi tanta categoria pra levar rock n roll...

  • Backbone of The Stones...Charlie Watts, just ask Keith

  • 70 years old. Still one of the coolest drummers in rock music.

  • most reliable drummer out there

  • non satanic

  • Man! I love this setup, getting to see Charlie at work, close-up! He's got to be one of the tightest, most sweetly nuanced drummers out there. Too often overlooked amid all the hype of the more flamboyant personalities in the band, Charlie Watts IS the MAN! Lookin' GOOD, too!

  • mercy me, at his age too....

  • He has quite a job keeping a 'visual' on the other band members. Love Charlie! Thanks for the post.

  • What Eric is to guitars, Charlie is to drum !!!

  • @alienhuman

    amen.

  • still got the chops....awesome

  • il suo modo di suonare la batteria e' unico.

  • magnifico!

  • just love Charlie!

  • I take great pride in telling people I shamelessly copy Charlie's drumming when I play myself!

  • ooooooh!!! MAESTRO ERES GRANDE MISTER WATTS

  • Is this form a DVD?

  • I believe Charlie Watts, and Ray Manzarek, are the two oldest men in rock'n'roll.

  • @charlessavarese Bob Dylan is a few months older than Charlie.

  • One of the best Rock N' Roll drummers of all time, if not THE best.

  • Thanks for posting this.

  • GREAT player..simply nwonderfullllllllll..thanks for all of this!

  • he drums in a manner that seems like hes doing everything at the last minute, and i love it, steady steady steady

  • With two to three percent of the dyslexics that meant to hit the thumbs up button we can rest assured that statistics run true, no?

Charlie Watts, you did it. You kept it together for the most part when your closest were in tatters.

  • Gotta agree with other comments. . . Charlie epitomizes cool and steady. He is a true journeyman drummer and the sound he elicits from his drum kit is astounding.

  • ten buttheads who dislikes this...

  • He's really one of the coolest guys going, and the fact that he does it with such understated elegance makes him that much cooler.

  • Brilliant !

  • Its got that groove thing Charlie, you rule

  • 10 ppl missed a beat.

  • Can you even imagine playing drums for the Stones for 50 years? What an epic life!!

  • Basher Watts. Minimal kit . Fookin massive sound! 70 years old, and still cutting it. Regardless of what people say he's got nothing to prove, its all in the Stones back catalogue, still one of the finest drummers ever. God bless yer!

Not sure about that right nostril thing though?

  • If aint got that swing it dont mean a thing!

  • I think Charlie's best drum riffs are prominently displayed on The Rolling Stones' song, "Sympathy For The Devil." Who's with me? Oh yeah, Happy 70th birthday, Charlie! I hope you keep drumming into your 80's.

  • I think Charlie's best drum riffs are prominently displayed on The Rolling Stones' song, "Sympathy For The Devil." Who's with me?

  • Happy Birthday Charlie! :D

  • HaPpY BiRtHdAy CHARLIE !!!

  • how he makes it with his right nostril.. i'm just curious, but how.. hmm

  • Happy 70th B-day Charlie. Thank you, it's been a hell of a ride.

  • THANKS

    GREAT VIDEO

    GREAT CHARLIE

    All the best

    Kean

  • Solid..what an ear to keep the band mooooving. Along!!

  • Charlie is one of my heroes.

He's a great, rock-steady drummer...simple and groovy with swing to spare.

Not to mention that he maintained his dignity and composure while being surrounded by some of the most extreme rock'n'roll debauchery and hedonism in history.

    Plus he's the best-dressed man in rock'n'roll.

    He is the FUCKING MAN.

  • He don't need a monster kit to make a statement or show who's king of the beat!

  • I would like to see him play with toots thielemans... just for one song.

  • This proves that you don't have to do a 10 minute dum solo to be considered a God.

  • Classiest rock drummer ever!

  • Charlie is 70 now and still going strong, playing with his jazz band all over Europe, you just gotta love him!!!!

  • It's a pleasure to watch one of the best ever, who obviously loves what he's doing, do it so well.

  • Keith moon is my favorite drummer, but i'd trust charlie to keep the beat of any song with my life...

  • He could afford any drums, yet he keeps those beautiful maple round badge Gretsch drums!!! What a great video / all on the drummer!!!

  • I could afford any drums, yet he keeps those beautiful maple round badge Gretsch drums!!! What a great video / all on the drummer!!!

  • Perfection - just perfection

  • The best team player drummer ever. The size of his drum kit demonstrates just that. Not a fortress - just everything you need to play rock and roll.

  • @lynnwoodsmeghead As I continually tell my wife.

  • The story about Charlie decking Mick with the your my Singer story---came out when Charlie was the Playboy Mag interview about 8 years ago more or less... Mick was super drunk at the time "wheres my drummer" Mr. Watts did put on one of his best suits to deck Mick. The interview is when Charlie opened up about his heroin addiction. If I recall correctly he was falling around during rehreasals. Keith actually helped him off it i believe. I"ve always Heard he never to L.S.D.

  • well, men: this a hard worker, professional, and an artist!!!!!!!!!!!

    hats down, please

Look at the progression in this video, of understanding the groove, first a bit worried (10" to 18"; then exploding in a perfect attack at 20", then following up until a smile gets on his face for understanding how good the whole thing is at 28".

    A real masterpiece.

  • The comments here are a lot like the ones on the Keith Richards focused version of this video. Guitar Center drum salesmen critiquing the guy who played "Brown Sugar." It's pretty hilarious.

  • I LEARNED HOW TO PLAY THE DRUMS BY LISTNING TO cHARLIE THANK YOU

  • Charlie is "The Man"!!

  • If you've read Keef's book where he talks about Charlie holding back on the high hat here's a great example.

  • @gloorbit Yeah...your right. I read that exact same thing and was looking for an example. Good book.

  • Charlie's a part of a team that works in no small part because Charlie plays precisely the way he does. Joey Kramer, for example, is perfect for Steve and Joe, but might not "work" with Mick and Keith. I played in two different Stones tribute bands. The most difficult position to fill was always "Charlie" because of his odd but air-hole-producing "lift-off" style.

  • I dated Charlie Watts' granddaughter.

  • There is on percussion him (it) Charlle dzentelmenem ilaik Charlle and I think (consider) that hard play very t and it is play not easy style .

  • I love how he doesn't hit the hi-hat as he hits the snare...I'm sure experienced drummers know all about this, but to me i think its great

  • Charlie is a good man, but unfortunately cannot play drums after so many years :(

  • @Wojslaw You must be joking.

  • @Wojslaw ur so misled

  • Charles is the only white drummer i could mistake for a brother

  • It's got that swing thing Chalie you RULE!

  • I wonder after about 40 years of playing drums, his technique is still like a noob drummer. O well, at least he's got grooves and beat accuracy.

  • @ransisua - sorry mate, I don't think you know what you're talking about. But we can agree to disagree on this one.

  • @davesf he doesn't have groove and beat accuracy? Ah, man. I guess you're right. I really don't know what I'm talking about.

  • @ransisua - you know what I meant, that his technique is "still like a noob" - that's the part I take issue with.

  • Charlie Watts = the heartbeat of the gods.

  • 70 years old now and still never missed a beat, I love Charlie, he's just so cool.

  • ONE of the best drummers of all times! His groove is very simple and very complex.Complex are his little stuff between main strokes, and result is great rhythm melody, extra quality sound and great pocket.

  • Charlie is an inspiration to drummers the world over! He doesn't need a huge mega-kit to get that unmistakable Stones sound! Just a little Gretsch, some ancient cymbals, lots of raw talent and a perfect feel for the song. You can keep your fancy fills and 30-minute solos; if I could play like Charlie then I would be a very happy man...

  • I wreckon I am related to that man.

  • the best *****

  • Charlie is the King.

  • Self taught too !!!

  • Who doesn't love Charlie???

  • I always thought that Charlie is the backbone of the group, adding control and rationality to what would otherwise be a band out of control. This man really shines at his 68s.

  • @logica10 A technician,tactician but ALWAYS feeling the groove

  • Charlie swings like a jazzer should....gives the Stones one of their many edges

  • Great Charlie.

  • Genio Charlie !!

  • Que buen gusto para tocar tiene este tipo...discreto, buen groove y musical.

  • Thanks for posting, he's my idol, this video's the tits!!

  • Famous story: Stones are having a meeting but Charlie is still in his hotel room: Mick barks into the phone: "Where's my fucking drummer? Get your arse down here right away!" Watts turns up and says: "Don't ever call me 'your drummer' again. You're my fucking singer."

  • @rocktenniscat just read this in the keith richards playboy interview from way back when, fucking hilarious!

  • he's my freaking idol. ALL the Stones are my idols. but Charlie is my hero!!

  • The RS band is the sum of the parts...alone they are decent musicians but together they become a real force

  • JUJUTAY youre ass is lame..."In the world of drumming this guy is a minnow" yeah whatever, and those same drum snobs arent making shit for their "expert" drumming and charlie watts gets paid huge money while your ass is flippin burgers

  • The Ultimate Proffessional !

  • Happy Birthday, arlin!

  • will always think of good fellas

  • I can't believe people are saying this guy is a JAZZ drummer - have you guys heard any jazz drummers?? Jazz drumming is about control and dexterity and swing and dynamics - Charlie Watts has none of these. To call him a jazz drummer is an insult to other jazz drummers and the art form as a whole.

  • @jujutay Charlie beats the drums better than you beat your meat.

    And that's really saying something.

  • I Love.. Charlie Watts , Peter Criss , Jeff Porcaro and Bev Bevan!

  • The freakin' backbone to this rock n roll monster that is the Stones -- for nearly 50 years!

  • The freakin' backbone to the rock n roll monster for nearly 50 years!

  • @fanof41

Fucking right! The backbone to the rockand roll monster,,,,,, well said!

    Katya

  • this man is 68 years old and still one of the best drummers in the world. and this song is real great.

  • In Argentina the huge and wild crowd acclaimed him for 5 minuts

everybody singin very happy ole ole ole ole !!!!!

  • mis respetos para ti charlie eres increible!!!

  • One of the most underrated drummers!

Watts knows his stuff and the man is amazing!

  • defintely a jazz influence.watts rules!

  • is he dealing cards back there? ;)

  • You gotta love him, he´s the fucking man!!!!

  • vinnie colaiuta is the best, horacio hernandez please

  • You wouldn't want to get into a stick fight with Charlie.

  • Or a fist fight, either. He's pretty good at that, too.

  • So I've heard. Legend has it Mick called Charlie, asking "Where's my drummer?" Charlie calmly dressed, took the elevator to Mick's floor of the hotel, went in, and knocked Mick on his ass, saying: "I'm not your fucking drummer---you're MY singer!"

Charlie, being a gentleman, never discusses this.

    But I bet it's true.

  • @wineandwomen Yeah, Keith talks about it in his books. Says he punched Mick so hard he slid across a table of food and damn hear went out a window before he was grabbed by Keith. Charlie asked Keith why he stopped him Keith said "Because he was wearing my jacket." LOL Good book :)

  • @dannyd1572 Ha, ha!

If Charlie hit Mick as hard as he hits those skins, it's a wonder Mick's still breathing!

  • @wineandwomen Yep..Keith told it in his book. Said Mick slid on a table of food and the only reason Keith said he grabbed him up was because he was wearing Keith's suit.

  • Charlie digs this!

  • best snare sound! Listento that thwACK!

  • Anyone knows what is that dashboard? Thanks

  • look closely and you will see handwriting......it's the set list

  • The drummer controls the pace of the band,If he speeds,we all speed,if he slows,we all slow.I love his style, simple, solid,no frills, natural gentleman..

  • that's how you play the drums, without a fucken doubt Charlie Watts is the best classic rock drummer.

  • 68 years old and he still doesn't miss a beat.

  • @watergrass5150 you are forgetting on a drum legend Keith Moon :]

  • hes the best

  • Search "Charlie Watts - Cleo Lane Show" here for a Charlie Watts solo...

  • Fantastico

  • fantastic

  • Well buddy, if you played the drums for over 50 years like charlie here youd be stiff to lol

  • Not to step on anyone's feelings, but is there any videos of Charlie actually playing a solo? I can't find any...and I feel if someone is considered a major contributor to the art form, they should be able to play a solo.

Any suggestions? I respect Charlie as a player, but there are a lot of great drummers that can all play amazing solos...I would love to see and hear a Charlie Watts solo.

  • @drumman81 LOLz

  • Charlie approaches the instrument as an accompaniment. He says he doesn't dig solos.

  • its nice to see Charlie being the star for once - i'd say he's a bit of an unsung hero to be honest. just love the way he makes the effort to smile at the camera; i want to give him a big hug!

  • Watts is one the most respected drummers in the world. He bridged the blues into rock and roll, staying true to one and helping to define the other.

Believe me, Ringo and Charlie are laughing together whenever they get together. Imagine the talent and the skill they have, the intelligence to make the work work, and the stamina to do it for going on 50 years.

Imagine the things they have seen, the stories they have been a part of.

Imagine all that, then shut up and enjoy the best.

  • I love how you think about this, now I need to have the Imagination again and practice, whatever it is, it aplies to everything what we are doing

  • hey giosmrbig...do you think if he wasnt a good drummer, Mick and Keith would let him hang around for 45 years???

what a stupid arguement to carry on and on about.

  • It ain't Mick and Keith who let Charlie hang around, It's Charlie who let's Mick and Keith hang around!

  • So true!!!!!

  • @heppu164

    Oh yeah!

  • most people would prolly like to have a beer with Charlie Watts...

  • If Charlie has a beer with me, I'll do the buying.

  • LOL! who knows, you may be getting a call soon...

  • the bass player to this is amazing

  • Charlie can just GLANCE at a drum kit and give it an orgasm.

  • Charlie just fucking RULES!! His work on "Gimme Shelter" confirms....

  • I always did like Charlie Watts. I don't think he ever got enough recognition. He made all those fab sounds without needing a huge drum kit. He reminds me of the drummer from Fleetwood Mac!

    The bad boys of rock!!!!

  • Sorry, but 47 years worth of fans disagree with you. If he wasn't good, most of us wouldn't still be here praising what he's done. To each his own.

  • i don't know why most of the ROLLING fans say that charlie is a good drummer. i respect their opinion but, to be onest he is not the best player on earth. people talk because they are fans not for their experience on a drum kit. thats's my opinion you can say charlie is a good man, but not a good drummer.

  • u r an idiot. lol

  • Look, I'm not a diehard Stones fan, but I can definitely appreciate what Charlie is doing. He's not out to prove he's the best in the world, he just does what he can to contribute to the band. He doesn't want any spotlight for himself. But don't say he's not a good drummer, that was some excellent drumming there.

  • listen.. if you like it, i respect your opinion. if i have to talk as a drummer i can't say it's the best performance i have ever seen in my life.

i can enjoy the music, but i think , to be onest, talking about drums, it's not a good performance.

  • Of course not. Again, Charlie is not out to be the best drummer in the world, he simply fulfills his duties as a contributer to the song. But in terms of groove and pocket, this is a fine performance. There is nothing bad about about his playing. His beat is spot-on, and his fills are exquisite for the music. Anything more and it would be too much. I'm sure he realized that. And as a fellow drummer, you should realize that we as drummers must take account of the music around us.

  • i have my opionion and i respect you...
