Man! I love this setup, getting to see Charlie at work, close-up! He's got to be one of the tightest, most sweetly nuanced drummers out there. Too often overlooked amid all the hype of the more flamboyant personalities in the band, Charlie Watts IS the MAN! Lookin' GOOD, too!
Gotta agree with other comments. . . Charlie epitomizes cool and steady. He is a true journeyman drummer and the sound he elicits from his drum kit is astounding.
Basher Watts. Minimal kit . Fookin massive sound! 70 years old, and still cutting it. Regardless of what people say he's got nothing to prove, its all in the Stones back catalogue, still one of the finest drummers ever. God bless yer!
I think Charlie's best drum riffs are prominently displayed on The Rolling Stones' song, "Sympathy For The Devil." Who's with me? Oh yeah, Happy 70th birthday, Charlie! I hope you keep drumming into your 80's.
He's a great, rock-steady drummer...simple and groovy with swing to spare.
Not to mention that he maintained his dignity and composure while being surrounded by some of the most extreme rock'n'roll debauchery and hedonism in history.
The story about Charlie decking Mick with the your my Singer story---came out when Charlie was the Playboy Mag interview about 8 years ago more or less... Mick was super drunk at the time "wheres my drummer" Mr. Watts did put on one of his best suits to deck Mick. The interview is when Charlie opened up about his heroin addiction. If I recall correctly he was falling around during rehreasals. Keith actually helped him off it i believe. I"ve always Heard he never to L.S.D.
I don't think that there is a Human on this Planet....whom I love more than Charlie Wats. Got hooked on the Stones via "Can't You Hear Me Knockin'" and "Sway" when I was 12.....not long after I started learning guitar.
40 years later I'm still at it. Better than I've ever been (though still not as good as Keef) .... and Charlie still blows me away!
well, men: this a hard worker, professional, and an artist!!!!!!!!!!!
hats down, please
Look at the progression in this video, of understanding the groove, first a bit worried (10" to 18"; then exploding in a perfect attack at 20", then following up until a smile gets on his face for understanding how good the whole thing is at 28".
The comments here are a lot like the ones on the Keith Richards focused version of this video. Guitar Center drum salesmen critiquing the guy who played "Brown Sugar." It's pretty hilarious.
Charlie's a part of a team that works in no small part because Charlie plays precisely the way he does. Joey Kramer, for example, is perfect for Steve and Joe, but might not "work" with Mick and Keith. I played in two different Stones tribute bands. The most difficult position to fill was always "Charlie" because of his odd but air-hole-producing "lift-off" style.
ONE of the best drummers of all times! His groove is very simple and very complex.Complex are his little stuff between main strokes, and result is great rhythm melody, extra quality sound and great pocket.
Charlie is an inspiration to drummers the world over! He doesn't need a huge mega-kit to get that unmistakable Stones sound! Just a little Gretsch, some ancient cymbals, lots of raw talent and a perfect feel for the song. You can keep your fancy fills and 30-minute solos; if I could play like Charlie then I would be a very happy man...
I always thought that Charlie is the backbone of the group, adding control and rationality to what would otherwise be a band out of control. This man really shines at his 68s.
Famous story: Stones are having a meeting but Charlie is still in his hotel room: Mick barks into the phone: "Where's my fucking drummer? Get your arse down here right away!" Watts turns up and says: "Don't ever call me 'your drummer' again. You're my fucking singer."
JUJUTAY youre ass is lame..."In the world of drumming this guy is a minnow" yeah whatever, and those same drum snobs arent making shit for their "expert" drumming and charlie watts gets paid huge money while your ass is flippin burgers
I can't believe people are saying this guy is a JAZZ drummer - have you guys heard any jazz drummers?? Jazz drumming is about control and dexterity and swing and dynamics - Charlie Watts has none of these. To call him a jazz drummer is an insult to other jazz drummers and the art form as a whole.
So I've heard. Legend has it Mick called Charlie, asking "Where's my drummer?" Charlie calmly dressed, took the elevator to Mick's floor of the hotel, went in, and knocked Mick on his ass, saying: "I'm not your fucking drummer---you're MY singer!"
@wineandwomen Yeah, Keith talks about it in his books. Says he punched Mick so hard he slid across a table of food and damn hear went out a window before he was grabbed by Keith. Charlie asked Keith why he stopped him Keith said "Because he was wearing my jacket." LOL Good book :)
@wineandwomen Yep..Keith told it in his book. Said Mick slid on a table of food and the only reason Keith said he grabbed him up was because he was wearing Keith's suit.
The drummer controls the pace of the band,If he speeds,we all speed,if he slows,we all slow.I love his style, simple, solid,no frills, natural gentleman..

Watts is one the most respected drummers in the world. He bridged the blues into rock and roll, staying true to one and helping to define the other.
Believe me, Ringo and Charlie are laughing together whenever they get together. Imagine the talent and the skill they have, the intelligence to make the work work, and the stamina to do it for going on 50 years.

Bud Jamison (Feb. 15, 1894 -- Sept. 30, 1944), the actor & tenor who played against the Three Stooges in the comedies: "Men in Black" & "Woman Haters," was a singer for the Rolling Stones.
I always did like Charlie Watts. I don't think he ever got enough recognition. He made all those fab sounds without needing a huge drum kit. He reminds me of the drummer from Fleetwood Mac!
i don't know why most of the ROLLING fans say that charlie is a good drummer. i respect their opinion but, to be onest he is not the best player on earth. people talk because they are fans not for their experience on a drum kit. thats's my opinion you can say charlie is a good man, but not a good drummer.
Look, I'm not a diehard Stones fan, but I can definitely appreciate what Charlie is doing. He's not out to prove he's the best in the world, he just does what he can to contribute to the band. He doesn't want any spotlight for himself. But don't say he's not a good drummer, that was some excellent drumming there.
Of course not. Again, Charlie is not out to be the best drummer in the world, he simply fulfills his duties as a contributer to the song. But in terms of groove and pocket, this is a fine performance. There is nothing bad about about his playing. His beat is spot-on, and his fills are exquisite for the music. Anything more and it would be too much. I'm sure he realized that. And as a fellow drummer, you should realize that we as drummers must take account of the music around us.
The best, only uses what he needs and gets this really big sound.

I always did like Charlie Watts. I don't think he ever got enough recognition. He made all those fab sounds without needing a huge drum kit. He reminds me of the drummer from Fleetwood Mac!

Sorry, but 47 years worth of fans disagree with you. If he wasn't good, most of us wouldn't still be here praising what he's done. To each his own.

i don't know why most of the ROLLING fans say that charlie is a good drummer. i respect their opinion but, to be onest he is not the best player on earth. people talk because they are fans not for their experience on a drum kit. thats's my opinion you can say charlie is a good man, but not a good drummer.

Look, I'm not a diehard Stones fan, but I can definitely appreciate what Charlie is doing. He's not out to prove he's the best in the world, he just does what he can to contribute to the band. He doesn't want any spotlight for himself. But don't say he's not a good drummer, that was some excellent drumming there.

listen.. if you like it, i respect your opinion. if i have to talk as a drummer i can't say it's the best performance i have ever seen in my life.
i can enjoy the music, but i think , to be onest, talking about drums, it's not a good performance.
