One isn't required to incriminate oneself, but many players call shots against themselves, for example, if they see the ball out, or not up. However, one would expect the same standard to be used for both players. That is, if one is very fair with one's calls, not leaving it to the ref, then one would expect one's opponent to be the same. I don't know what Powers or Razik's reputation was in this regard.
Is there any general understanding of whether it is acceptable sportsmanship for Power to refuse to answer this question put to him by the umpire? Power seems like he is being an ass but should he be required to incriminate himself? (Compare Blake/Gonzales in the Olympics. Here Blake seemed like an ass whining about it afterwards at press conferences. I assume Razik got over it sooner).
What is wrong with Johnny? What's his problem. Simple question, "Did he hit your hand?" Yes or no. Is it that hard to play fair and admit that he hit your hand?
Power is in a different league entirely, but couldn't be arsed 'cause his opponent was a dick. Just look at the jump volley towards the end of the game, a very rare shot for a pro as the outcome is too variable - he just wasn't bothered and wanted to finish the game with the torrid little man and go to the pub!
i don't know much about tennis or squash, but it seems that the relationship between the players, the ref and the spectators is a bit more relaxed and less stiff than in tennis (1:44 and following), i like that!
nah squash can get really bad, squash can get a lot of really bad calls not just as in tennis "in or out" is the 99% of bad calls but in squash it could be "in or out" "down or up" "double bounces" are hard to see sometimes. "lets (interferences of play" we actually have a new system that 3 refs areneeded for squash not just one. hope that helps
Basically, if you cant get to the ball because your opponent is in the way then its a let. If you can get to the ball but cant play your shot coz your scared u mite hit your opponent then its a stroke. There are a few variations to this rule (like created interference) but thats the basics. Hope this helps
can anyone please explain the call of 'let' and 'stroke' ive been playing a couple of months and dont understand this at all. Any help appreciated. Matt.
If a player feels he cannot strike the ball because his opponents in the way he can call 'let' in which the point is replayed. This is usually the case in friendlys or casual play.
In a more competitive match, if the opponent definitely interferes its called as a 'stroke' in which the player trying to play the shot is awarded the rally. If its a 50/50 decision its usually given as a let and the point is replayed.
I play squash for a long time. JP is an awesome player. He is not a calm person , and he is very competitive guy . Squash demands a kind of preson like that . He don´t need your approval , he is the champ because of himself.
He is the showman in squash . To see his dvds I prepare some popcorn at home and tell everybody to shut up. Is better than see a movie. But you got to know something about the game. If you do not like him ,ok ... JC could not pleased everyone , imagine JP;
I just finished watching JP at the 2008 Nationals, where again he played Razik in the final. He totally dominated the match. Razik the much fitter player tried to beat Power by keeping the rallies long and the ball tight to the wall. Power would have nothing of it. JP won by racquet skill and pretty much doing whatever he wanted with the ball. He has the most deceptive backhand when left in the front left of the court. He is truly won of the greatest players ever.
I don't know wether anyone's spotted this yet, but on many squash videos on youtube monkeyman starts agrgueing with people and I dont once recall one person sticking up for him, the reoson why is simple, hes a complete biggot who knows absolutley fuck all about squash, so monkeyman, go away, learn about squash, maybe learn the rules or a bit about the players it's up to you, and come back when you have something intelligent to say unlike the usual dose of shite you treat us to all the time
nobody comes close the Khan's, if you have heard any of todays top players make reference to their game you will know that those guys were a head above the rest.
The camera angle from the front looking in towards the back is made possible by the glass court. The camera was actually outside the court and not in front of the tin as most people would believe. Its true. Now you know, you're welcome.
and finally slightly of topic how come no one has come even close to dominating the game like those two or coming even close to the records that these two created in terms of winning consequtive matches or british opens or world championships?
jansher was at the end of his career his knees had given way.and now that you bring it up at his peak the only one who could match his fitness was jahangir, peter nicol many years after jansher retired commented upon the fitness levels that the two khans introduced to the game and their fitness regimens as having passed from the game along with them!
someone who played at a high level peter nicol is on record as saying that the level of fitness in the game now is not the same as before, before being the days of the khans
...a 4 minute rally down the backhand rail(like the old days) doesn't take the fitness that a 45 second rally all over the court does. these guys are fit.
and i remember well that jehangir's practice games in karachi where i used to train as well were like the games of today full of strokes and not the types of defensive strokes you mentioned and that for hours after hours of running on the beach and training in the morning
and finally and i remebered more again what i have said has beenthe observation of so many qamar zaman in pakistan and geoff hunt here in america echoing my sentiment i could give you more names but you would not know them, have you watched the games played in the 80's?
Power played half-assed in this one...he should have trieD and schooled Razik. Should have showed Razik how to play the game, no more of that rallying/attritional BS that Razik plays!
drives are used to create pressure and crack an opponent into giving out something loose, its not really offensive, as for boasts, they can be incredibly offensive if u play it at the right time, mainly boasts are used for working players, (hence the term working boast). As for power, honestly, he was the most racket gifted player ever...period...sure he lacked physical conditioning, but when ur that talented
jp has racket skill but squash isnt like tennis. you need more than one good shot to win the rally. you need to know what shot to make, tactics. besides at that level, almost everyone has amazing shots.. being a little better doesn't give you that big an edge.
agreed on the drives and boasts, could not disagree more on rating power as the best ever with racquet skills qamar zaman of the 70's so much better in that regard also world standard and fitness levels have fallen so much truly the golden age was that of jehangir jansher chris dittmar rodney martin these 4 were head and shoulders above the rest
what you say is ridiculous, fitness levels of those days, fitness regimens, the game itself has been shortened due to rule changes, and what i say is chris dittmar's lament and jehangir's comment, more so i have played the game so am very aware of the changes
why would squash athletes - who i'd say are among the fittest in the world - be the only ones that haven't gotten faster and stronger? watch a pro match today and then watch dittmar and jahingar in the old days...it's dead slow.
and the game is so much shorter nowadays does that not take away from exertion spent?more importantly the fitness regimens of nowadays compared to the legendary workouts of hunt and then jehangir who beat him at his own game fitness.
Quite right, quite right. It makes a refreshing change not to have someone who wants to start an argument on youtube with me over something lol. Excellent.
thats not completely true. you can use boast as offensive shot i.e. to win the point. and pros do do that. but more often than not it is not the best shot.

A stroke is where the opponent hits the ball back to himself or if he is obstructed most of the front wall (i think 3/4 of it).
