uh, no. actually japan publically restarted whaling in the 40s but it has been whaling since the edo period. i'm sure if you're as educated as you said you were, you would have known that. so yes, whaling is part of japan's culture just as eating kangaroo or alligator meat is in australia. not a whole lot of people eat it, but it's still a gastronomic culture of each of those countries.

The paradox is this; The authorities cannot shut Sea Shepherd down because the same lack of enforcement that allows the whalers and poachers to get away with their crimes also allows Sea Shepherd to get away with taking measures to stop these criminals on Their own. Australian newspapers report Melbourne Zoo is facing a claim of cruel treatment of animals.
A female elephant, named Dokkoon, was repeatedly jabbed in the leg at least a dozen times. A silverback gorilla, named Rigo, had been kept in isolation for 16 years. 2 seals were becoming blind because of excess of chlorine in their pool.
Other animals were also held in conditions injurious to their health at Melbourne zoo.
