just cause he was a Yankee does not mean he should be in the HOF people. It's a borderline case really. He was the best in the game for a few years but kind of slipped after that.I will say this,Keith Hernandez was a similar player, with 2 WS rings, good hitter, great gloveman. If one is in the other should be.What I don't get is why all these people want Donny in but say Konerko, with much better power and RBI numbers is a tossup.Cause he is with the Whit Sox and not Boston or Ny that's why.
The Yankees already retired his number and put him in Monument Park! Thats well more than enough for what he did. He was pretty good but not that great. There is already too many average mediocre players in the hall of fame already.
donny f@#$% baseball, only the great num 4 was the best of all time ,roids all this crap ,,9 gg ,mvp and 2en runner up to roid rocket!!!! sad man love him and a true yankee capt and person ,get donny baseball in the H.O.F.
i know on the surface hios numbers fall a little short of hall of fame, but when u dig deepr to records he broke , the 9 gold gloves all the years he was in running for mvp its hard to deny Hes without a doubt a hall of fame player. His number is retired by the yankees!! i mean come on, hes the best and for many years he was the most feared playing in baseball.
There ARE NO STATISTICAL GUIDELINES set forth. In fact voting baseball writers are instructed to judge candidates on ability, integrity, sportsmanship, character, and contributions to the team or teams on which he played, as well as to baseball itself. Those are the explicit guidelines. Possessing every quality on that list, coupled with offensive and defensive production that matches many residence of Cooperstown, Mattingly qualifies.
9 gold gloves. Plus, pretty sure he NEVER was on steroids. Not his fault he didn't get to the world series; it's not like basketball, football, where one player iis involved in every offensive play. He may bat 3-5 times a game...During his day he was probably the best all around. Although he was not fast, he was VERY good on the bases, aheads-up player, unlike Posada, whom I want to strangle. All the steroid-users not oly make their numbers look better, but HIS worse...unjust. Put him in.
I tend to think that the HOF should be for the most elite players ever like Babe Ruth, Cy Young, Ted Williams,Hank Aaron, etc. Players who reached the very top of baseball acheivement, meaning the first to do it, and maybe still unmatched by those that followed. Don will be forever in the Yankees best ever class, and that says a lot. I will always cherish the memory of seeing him homer in the 1995 Game 2 Div Series vs the Mariners. To see him finally get a taste of postseason ball was great.
I believe Mattingly should be in the Hall of Fame for two reasons. First reason, many people, even so-called "experts" consider him the greatest player of the 1980s. How can you be the greatest player of a decade and not be a Hall of Famer? Second reason, it's called the Hall of Fame, not the Hall of Statistics. I'm pretty sure most people born after 1960 would prefer to see Donnie's plaque at the Hall, then say Bruce Sutter or Don Sutton.
yes keith hernandez won 11, however mattingly does hold the american league record for most gold gloves by a first baseman and tied with steve garvey for best fielding percentage. All mattingly needed for the hall is a world series ring, he has enough accomplishments , loved by the fans and sportswriters, but he doesn't have a ring and his numbers aren't enough on their own. Regardless, Don Mattingly is my favorite player of all time.. i met him at a book signing and was super cool. donnie rules
if kirby puckett is in the hall of fame then don mattingly derserves to be in too. the whole reason kirby got in and donnie didnt is cause of the world series wins which is a crock of BS!
I love Mattingly, but objectively speaking, he is borderline for the HOF at best. Offensively, he had 4 incredible seasons and 1 very good season and that's it. The last 6 years of his career he was an offensive liability. He didn't strikeout much but he didn't walk much either. .358 lifetime OBP is nothing impressive. Had he not hurt his back he would have been one of the best ever. If you let Mattingly in you have to let K Hernandez and Will Clark in too.
The Home Run to Strike out ratio is his most impressive stat by FAR. He sacrificed some of the flair of the home run to make sure he got on base or forced the defense to make a play on him everytime he batted to help his team over himself
Seriously Mattingly needs to get into the HOF.....think about it....dude has the GrandSlam Record, Captian of the Yankees and husteled every time out there.......
It's criminal if Don Mattingly doesn't get his rightful spot in the hall of fame. I can't think of a single reason not to put him in. His stats and sportsmanship alone make him worthy. The fact that he's an ideal role model for young people is icing on the cake. He's quite possibly the best PURE hitter to ever play. He could hit for power but he was more concerned with jus getting on base and scoring runs. Thats the way the game should be played.
A professional and one of the classiest hard working players in the truest sense, the Captain Donnie Baseball deserves to be in the Hall - but either way, the number 23 sits out there in Yankee Stadium next to Ruth's 3, Gehrig's 4, Dimaggio's 5, and Mantle's number 7, and that's more than 99.999% of MLB players can ever say.
Also, don't forget to mention his 442 doubles, his '85 MVP, his '84 AL batting title, his '87 home run records (grand slams, consecutive HRs), his career .996 career fielding %, silver slugger awards, six-time all-star selections, '95 post-season stats, team records such his 238 hits in a season, amazing strike-out to at-bat ratio (it's freakish), and his relatively short-playing career (due to injuries) compared to many in the HOF who stack up their numbers by playing for 17 to 20 seasons.
Hi. Donnie rules. But his 9 gold gloves at first base is an AL record, not a an MLB record like you stated in the video [I think Garvey and Hernandez both have more in the NL].
I recognize that Hernandez has 2 more gold gloves. Donnie did not, however, have the benefit of fielding weak ground balls from the NL pitchers. I figure this takes at least 2 gold gloves away from Mex. I also purport that cocaine might be a perfomance enhancing drug for fielders. Maybe it should be listed as 11* gold gloves for Keith.
just cause he was a Yankee does not mean he should be in the HOF people.
