Jerry wrote the song. He also played guitar on Elvis' version at Elvis' request because nobody else could get that sound. Jerry's original recording is better than this version.

@BigAstroG ...You know that Jerry wrote this song right. But, he wrote it for Elvis. One of my best froends is Jerry Reeds first cousin . His name is Wayne Parham. I had dinner with him one night and he asked if I minded if his cousin joined us......I didn't know it was Jerry Reed. He was awesome. I'm from Savannh Ga. This encounter happened when Jerry and Burt Reynolds were here making "GATOR". ...cheers
