The problem is that the last time an independent came close to winning the presidency was in1912 when former president Theodore Roosevelt placed 2nd behind Woodrow Wilson and ahead of incumdent president William Howard Taft. Election laws being what they are, it's tuff for 3rd parties. But,the paulites might be able to take a weakened GOP from the party establishment the way Goldwaterites were able to do against the liberal Rockefeller wing in 1964. Something to think about.
