Queen's are nessecary in a nest, without it all of the ants will eventually die. Digging up ant nests doesn't work btw, you better buy them or wait till their mating season has started, and pick up a wingless queen when they are done.
Oh, so i could feed an ant some steak for the protein right? Or would the protein be given from any other household food with lots of protein? Or are the ants specific to bug meat?
Keep it natural. We don't know, if there are ant specific nutrients in the prey's meat. Go outside with a jar and catch some insects. If you are disgusted by that, then ant keeping isn't the right hobby for you. :P
There must be some pet shops near you which sell meal worms or crickets or flies with crippled wings (they are fed to pet reptiles). Kill them with boiling water and cut them open.
The nest can support 1000 ants. Because Messor barbarua is a harvester ant, real estate is lost due to the seeds, which are stored in the nest. Of course the outside world has to grow larger for them to travel larger distances like in nature.
hello, antblogger. I have found a queen ant idk what it is but i live n las vegas nevada. I found 100+ ants witht the queen and wondering what should i feed them?? and i also have a dirt and and something like urs ant farm
Congrats! First oof all, you should join an ant forum. Google for "ant farm yuku" and you will find an US based message board.
Ants need three different things to survive: water, honey (in case of harvester ants: seeds) and proteins (insects!). Depending on the species, queens may found a colony without eating until the first workers emerge. But in some species, queens leave their nest to hunt. So grab a camera (with macro mode) and post the picture on the boards for identification.
Sorry, didnt read, that you also have 100 workers. Put a test tube filled with water and sealed with a cotton ball as a water source. Provide them dead insects and a drop of honey. If they are harvester ants, put some seeds in the foraging area too.
I've drilled some holes into the stones, where I can pour some water in. But it seemed like moisture was too high. The workers died because of that so I stopped moisturizing. Messor barbarus are ok with that. They can bring in water from external sources.
True, but ive been trying with them i have seen the female flying ants with out wings but they never lay eggs... they don't do ant farms in Australia were you buy queens from were live cause its illegal (sucks) and its to hard to dig up queens... so how do i get them other wise... i find it hard to find queens mated and i have seen males and females doin it but it didnt work out when i caught the female so how do i get them other wise.....?
If you would like to get what this guy has keep an eye out at antsinyourpants.webs.com and search my username: tylerberk123 on ebay!!!

Where did you get a queen ant because I thought those were the only ants that could reproduce?

You're so luck! My Acromyrmex octospinosus colony has only around 100..

how do you feed them without them escaping
johnlasiusniger 3 years ago
Easy, I'm using a thin layer of fluon to prevent them from climbing out. Alternativly, you can use cooking oil, as they hate the smell.

I'll probably need to go to the pet shop since its hard finding big insects like crickets or worms... thanx for the advice.

Would there be a change in behavior or somethin if u only fed them seeds?
SimDAAP 3 years ago
No, but they wouldn't have enough proteins to raise their larvae or lay eggs.

I wonder how many ants can be supported in that nest. Do u think the ants will need a bigger nest?

ok thanx...
Probably when the colony reaches 1000 you'll have to get rid of some...

numabrandon1 3 years ago
all ya have to to is get a female flying ant and a male put em together and they **** and bingo u have a queen!
spiderdude543 3 years ago
This doesn't work often. In fact, most of the ant species rely on the nuptial flight for a successful mating mid-air.
