  • did stefan juhn and his famly survive? ?

  • How sad that nobody knew what it really was that they were looking at. The next time you ever see the sea has receded way out like that, and a long unbroken wave is coming into shore, RUN!

  • thats fucikng insane

  • stupid guy, looks like "hey, a tsunami, i'm going to wait and see if i die"...

  • "was issst das ?""...was fürn idiot!!...dat heißt TSUNAMI....

  • @ibarahimsanlier look, I'm a tsunami victim, too. why do you back at !? I we're helping you guys financially and I have been, too. have you donated ?! do something with a respect to Japan, and where you have been like here.

  • What do you wanna know all the way from Turkey. A tsunami love troller ?!

  • @originallove911 maybe you should look up a dictionary for the word ''emphaty''.

    Or never mind...

  • ''Underestimate'' should be the name of this video.

  • People wants to hear the dialogs no matter they are important or not,so may put English subtittle.

  • I don't understand why people didn't run, I was 9 when this happened to me and within 5 seconds I knew what was going on.

  • @WoodOnWheelsTV It's called "normalcy bias" or by another term "herd instinct" - about 95% of the population. What this cameraman shows is what is called "situational awareness". These are the "watchmen" of every community.

  • through the whole video.. Im thinking "Stop looking at it! can't you see the boats tipping?! Run the fuck away!!"

  • @SIMul8rReviews Yup. If you see the sea bulging a few meters away of you and swallowing up ships, and you stand around asking "What's that?", I hope you don't breed.

  • Was ist das? Ja bym spierdalał!

  • I also saw this tsunami just on the other island of Phi Phi terrible thing better would have been natural disasters and life

  • Hey there's a GIANT wave coming... BUT NO ONE MOVE OUT OF THE WAY!?!?!

  • 2 of 2. At sea it would have hardly any height. However when it reaches land suddenly then the first part slows down but the huge power behind keeps on coming and it 'bunches up' to create the wall of water. In this case the slope into land was gradual so the huge height was not reached.

  • 1 of 2. There is a longer version of this video and you will see there that they eventually heed the danger and run to higher ground and were saved.

The tsunami can break as a wall of water or without any height at all, depending upon where it lands. In a situation like this it did not have much height because the terrain was flat. It is basically a large ripple travelling at high speed with a hug wavelength of power that just keeps on coming...

  • OMG... after 1:14 I WOULD RUN AS FAST AS I COULD AND AS LONG AS I COULD. seriously, you guys have some balls. that's nothing to play with...fucking HUGE WALL of water coming right to you.. RUUN.

  • It's very hard to believe people didn't knew a tsunami was coming, specially after having the earthquake and watching the sea rise like that. But I'm happy I never had to experience something like this and I hope I never will..

  • Shits so scary.

  • At 1:45 you can see the smartest people at the beach!

  • It doesnt actually look like a very big wave.

  • @jamesingtonthethird it was the big wave one even it seemed not..

that's the 1st time Tsunami happened in Thailand and when other countries warned the official, they didnt believe it could happen and hadnt warn people of the Tsunami

so at the time they didnt know what Tsunami was.. and many hadnt even heard of it,,

and no one escaped .. that's terrible

  • @sweettopfy absoluteyl! people didn't know what a Tsunami was! Even those who are getting nuts about that guy asking what's that? would do the same! Who ever thought about a Tsunami that time.. So horrible scenes!

  • @jamesingtonthethird Tsunami's aren't tall waves. Their length from top to bottom is more spread out horizontally while normal waves are spread out vertically. This gives the tsunami the power to travel 2 to 3 miles onto land. From afar, these waves just look like white wash. These tourists had no idea what was going on.

  • Hold the damm camera still!!!!!!!!!!

  • @bigbad85chevyman

    omg......

  • JUNGEEEEEEEEE WAS FILMST DUUU!!!!!

  • @BeBeAyumi spar dir deine kommentare junge....

  • warum filmst du????? LAUF!!

  • wow thanks for techonlogy! too be able to see that is just amazing, and the ship getting taken out wow! i read those waves got upt to 130ft!!!!

  • 3:00 Ummmmmm.... yes it's definitely time to run away now!!

  • You can't win over the power of nature.

  • Comment removed

  • idiots if you see a fucking wave in the distance that big you fucking run dont fucking just stand their and film.

  • Was das ist? Wasser.

  • man i dont get how people didnt know what it was!

  • lol all the locals are getting the hell away and the tourists left marveling the beauty

  • @nicool722,the woman in the black bathing suit is lying face down in the sand in another video. No Joke.I'm getting some seriously high powered binoculars if I visit the Pacific.

  • Ha ha. All the brown people are running away, and all the white people are standing around saying, "will you look at that. that's something you don't see everyday"

  • It's scary to read this idiotic comments down here. They are so smart and would have known what nobody knew at the time.

  • lol - srsly...

i just can laugh at these guys - why don't they have any clue whats going on?

Tsuanmis are long long known before... just as the night day cyclus... so why the hell did noone inform himself what a tsunami is, and whats happening right before the wave hits the beach?

    noone likes books mh? ;(

    i would've runned at 0:29 lates - lol

  • @JheakrynaKyAlur no, its just that tsunami's arn't what the general media it isn't a 50 story high wave that is coming.... in matter of fact it the exact opposite... from that far away, it just looks like regular wave... except the force of it is WAY higher than a regular wave.... so when it crashes it keeps going with a trumendous amount of force.... and they could be hundreds of them at a time, crash right after the other which causes the flooding, and BTW i would started running when the boat

  • @JheakrynaKyAlur got ingulphed!

  • if you see a white band like that, that means to get off the beach!

  • Tj526 hey asshole don't pretend that the rest of the world has your problem!

  • Tj526, hey asshole, just because you are fat and unhappy doen't mean that you need to take it out normal people.

  • @Beckhamlover88 HEY! What's with the sarcasm?! First of all, im not fat lol. Second, they DID survive. And third.......CHILL OUT.......DICKWAD! lmao

  • the longer version shows the wife running screaming "i cant run that fast". If you notice through the camera shaking, she's fat. Maybe surviving this encouraged her to lose weight so next time she wouldn't have that problem again lol.

  • Hey asshole don't pretend that everyone else is as patheic as you!

  • This is really scary to watch but in the end, it looks like he starts to run up some stairs so maybe they survived! Anyone know?

  • they survive by running to high ground - a longer 10 minute version is also on Youtube

  • @ptaaffe where?

  • It is so scary watching this video but what is scariest is that the German tourist does not realize the magnitude of the impending disaster, even though the waves at 1:17 and onward in the video are absolutely MASSIVE. At the rate that those waves were racing towards shore, I seriously doubt that he survived. They say the waves were over 10 meters high and they were traveled very fast. If anyone knows if he survived, please let us know.

  • @chronicreader

    yes the whole family survived.

  • they obviously did because the camera was alright. if they got washed out the camera would have gone with them, or if recovered would have still been destroyed. there would have been no footage either way.

  • did this family survive?

  • Hello Libertas78, you`re so right. Nobody before that time expected soething like that.

  • Was this Heinrich Litzenroth?

  • this is bound to happen in NZ soon

  • I think this was the scariest looking tsunami wave out of all the footage khao lak got hit hard

  • Knowing nothing about Tsunamis, there is no way people would asume the ocean to come back farther than the coast line. Won`t happen again though, since we all know whats happening now.

  • it is SO SAD that ALOT of people NOT ONLY from the tsunami PRONE islands/countries ESP in the Pacific, are SO "uneducated" as are some toursist to these sometimes occurring phenonmena due to earthquake/volcanic eruptions... I know it MUST BE quite a "SIGHT" to see OBVIOUSLY but My lord can they NOT figure that an ocean that GOES OUT and RECEDES will OBVIOUSLY have to THEN COME BACK IN? I am sorry but I DO feel that ALL schools WORLDWIDE should teach how to be on the "lookout" for this ... :/

  • Darf ich vorstellen das ist das Meer ;)

Weil du so oft fragst was ist das:

Gibt es davon noch nen 2 Teil???

    Wenn ja wer hat ihn??

    Cheers

  • Sorry but before 2004 most people didn`t even know the word "tsunami". Media had to explain the event in their coverage. It is completly arrogant to sit there today and claim that on this bright and calm day with the blue sky and no indication of what soever one would have run immidiatly. No as almost all people back then, one would have sit there in amazement trying to make sense of the sight.

  • anyone with a 1/4 of a brain would know that if the water receded like that showing the sea floor that something is screwed up and get the heck out.

  • @ galbro48026: the 'problem' is probably the fact that it is such a special sight, most people are too stunned to do anything...

  • muslims smell stink

  • yes, they had no warning, but come on, any person in their right mind would start haulin you know what out of there when you see a wave that's wider than the entire island....especially numerous ones

  • WHOEVER was holding that camera need to hand it over to someone else. It made me dizzy!

  • The water moved back like a half a mile

  • The tsunami was strange in Khao Lak because the first wave was the largest. Normally there are a few waves before the largest one to give you some indication something is terribly wrong, whereas in this case people had no idea what was coming.

  • i like it

  • i wud have run...seeing the boat get swollowed up... !

  • If you are so close a tsunami, you probably don´t stay alive to tell or show videos to other people, what does a tsunami look like.

  • a huge wall of water.

Dumm! Manche Fehler macht man nur einmal !

  • je to smutne :(

  • It´s amazing. we have to learn about nature, this kind of things are really incredible and devastating. R.I.P to the souls who died that horrible day.

  • i took German in college, unfortunately it's very rusty...that was a while ago. but i also took Oceanography, and we learned then that tsunami (technically 'seismic sea wave') come and take the water OUT into the ocean before it comes in to the beach. so if you're at the beach, and the water goes out to sea, you think "wow this is really low tide", you might wanna head to higher ground. if you can't do that, just kick butt inland as far as you can get.

  • ya thats what happened to this one place they saw the tide ahad dropped but the idiot people istead of leaving they went out and tried to catch the fish that got stuck on the tide area

  • Was is das??? Es ist wasser u fucking idiot!!

  • @KingFrej du kleiner Looser hättest das gewusst, was sonst keiner damals wusste.

    Hast du deinen Hauptschulabschluß geschaft?

  • Thank you posting this! Now people all over the world will know to run to higher ground when they see something like this.

  • You can't rip on this guy. Hindsight is 20/20 - now we all know he was in Khao Lak and that 7,000 people in that area died. But he had no idea. I'm sure he just thought it was big surf.

If you saw this in real life would you really think the wave would still be 35ft high when it washed ashore? I doubt it.

  • seriously they must have been un educated

  • Too bad they weren't in a high spot to get the video. A shame they all died.

  • he wait for superman' to came and save him..

  • When you see the sea pulling back like that. You should be already running, man. You should already be running for your friggin life.

This is when people don't study their geology/geography at school.

  • i went to khoa lak the year after this happenend.such a tragic disaster.the area towards bansakk beach is so exposed.i hope the ones who survived have regained what little they had.Try to visit khoa lak,its not commercialized/in a good location to visit similian islands.

  • Run to the hills...........Run foooooooooooor your li-i-ives

  • Yea... the whole time I watched this video I thought: why isn't this guy already running?

  • the man is from germany and he said what is it? the didnt know to run away,

  • I will admit that if I have been there, I would've had no effin idea that a tsunami was going on until the very last second. You rarely see this kind of thing in movies or television (let alone in real life). And this looks nothing like tsunamis I've seen in cartoons, heh.

  • look at the freaking wave longer than the island!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! any smart person would have run after they saw the boat get swalloed up.

  • @Trojanxplayer YA THINK?? geezus... :/

  • @RunawaY0201

The guy is aware of something strange going on. He makes some remarks on the two people with fins and that they are going to be pulled off the coastline. Then he focuses on the waves, which seem to be the reason why he put his camera on. Huge size, and big surf. He is quite excited. His girlfriend says that the people walking beneath the rocks won't get out of there, they'd be crazy.

  • @RunawaY0201

At 1:33 the guy says that the navy ships will get in trouble because of the freak wave for sure, and that all the Thai people are fleeing the beach. At 1:50 his girlfriend gets scared, and urges him to leave too. But he is amazed and stays although he sees boats flip over. "Maybe we really have to go now, I think" (2:50), he says, and "Wow, what's going on?" (3:00), and "Hey, what IS it?? (3:10), running off too.

  • i know ,,, he is from germany like me ... i understand him! but thanks

  • brilliant footage..so unbelievable to watch.

  • one of the scariest things to see. A huge wave of water coming towards you, slowly you might think, but fast as hell.

It's something you wanna just stand and look at, but you'd die if you did.

  • These guys died, they found the camera wedged in a tree

  • There was a TV show about the tsunami where they showed the whole clip - he was carrying his daughter and she was crying "I want to go home, I want to go home" just before the water hit... One second they were running, then next second the camera was under water and you knew they were all drowning - the man, his wife, and their three kids (their son was the infant you hear in the background)...

  • I pity those poor people snorkeling at .09

  • SOP SHAKING THE CAMERA

  • That really shows what it was like.

  • RUN its a bloody tsunami ... it ate the boats too RUN RUN ....

  • what are you doing still filming heinz run run run

  • @karlphillips1 NOT Heinz KURT bittie!

  • schauze halten wäre besser angesagt du penner

  • thx for this great eyewitness footage!

    Greetz from Berlin

  • this is the indian ocean tsunami in 2004

  • ohh cmon raan raan faasther faasther....

  • heftig

  • When you see a wave crunch a cost guard ship, stop asking 'wat ist das'.

    Just run!

  • Yeah, it's a german tourist make this video. First time I've seen it (about, 3 years ago) i was scared about the waves, but twice the filmer got two very young children, and he get's notice, that's a deathzone there are in and you'll see that (hear it) at the ending) you see the complete video..

  • Did the German Tourist make it?

  • ..yes! it's a german tourist and it's not funny, to run for your life, with little children on your arms. You think so? Then I'll feel sorry...no more..

  • I was there right after the tsunami, the military boat was pushed about 1,5km inland. The wave that hit this beach was approximately 12meters high and went 3km inland. Very sad video.

  • the problem was that the speed of the wave was supersonic and that cause all the problem

its good thing to see that the ppl who dont know about tsunamis and see how the sea pull off 30 min before the tsunami hit..

  • those clowns on the blow up lilo dont stand a chance.

  • What are those dumb tourists doing just standing there? The water got pulled back like a mile and they just stand there, watching those boats get raped. Hellen Keller could have fucking told you something's wrong

  • Who in the heck would rape a boat?!

  • I hope your got some bow out if it.

  • @debstef:

No, unfortunately no bow, but I sucked his crow's nest for like 15 minutes

  • your fucked up...

  • All you know from years of experience is that the sea level doesnt rise quick and the video is shot with high zoom so all you see really at the begining is a white stripe very far away in beautiful weather.

  • It is kind of scary, the degree of ignorance of some people here commenting how stupid all the people were in the video and just they would have known everything and had run early. If you never heard abt tsunami, like most didnt at the time, you just dondt know that sea going back is dangurous.

  • Well, maybe if you see just, and i mean just a big wave, it would be a nice event to watch. But if this big wave is preceded by the sea going away for abaout 500 meters, well then, your logic should tell you that somethings happening, and something thats not normal. That being the case you should run for higher ground right away. I can even see in this vid some guys using a little boat.

  • Thanks for translating it Mr okcomputer4.

WOW!!! it does looks normal from far,but its a huge freakin wave coming towards them.

  • can someone translate what he said?

  • "Isn't that funny how the water's gone out?"

"What's that wee wave out there?"

"Actually, wife, it doesn't look that small...."

"Maybe we'd better move inland a little. Grab the child."

    "what is that....?"

    "WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT???"

  • It pisses me off that the camera dude spazzes up the view as it approaches, i prefer seeing the break on the beach rather than waiting.

  • if yo would be in his position you would also stand still and watch that spectacular event...

point is its the biggest wave in modern history, and none of us would believe such waves even existed.

he just thought its a big wave thats never gona reach the coast that hard.

and as other survivors told they were also so amazed by that event they couldnt get their eyes of the wave..

  • Comment removed

  • hey bunch of idiots,if anyone of u was there,u'd be watching to,how they could imagine the wave would "eat" the hole beach and stuff

  • tsunamis are triggered when there is a vertical displacement on a fault on the ocean floor. one side goes up one goes down. when this happens pressure makes the water move resulting in a seismic sea wave and when it reaches the base which is shallow the waves shorten but increase in height because it has reached shallow surface. so that means run because the water will drown you

  • nope it can be caurse by a simple heavy slip of a canyon or a moving of plates or a up or down lift of a canyon or rifts when this happens pressure makes the water moves resulting in a unstable sea in witch belows out like a rock hitting warter creating a rippel affect aka the wave and when it reaches the shelf which is shallow the waves shorten but increase in height because it has reached the shore line. so that means the warter will recied and then come in fast when its receded

  • so you have about a mint to 5 minits to get to higher ground if you see the ocean reced really far say a mile run to the nearist mountin thats propbly how deep the warter its all in the math rip who has died in this event :(

  • I agree wit the one below me

  • it's sad, it sort of seems that due to his overall ignorance and naivety of the ocean, he didn't even know that something was strange. It's easy for me to say as a surfer and someone who's grown up in the ocean that you should've definitely known that what you see a mile out, is not normal and that it's not at all smart to be standing there. I hope in some miraculous way these people survived. Probably not though. What about those guys that were paddling out? DONE FOR!

  • they wou've had of survived. how did the clip get out then?

  • He was obviously not referring to the family behind the camera...

  • 

  • This isn't funny!! I knew the video allready but i's so hard!!

  • TIME TO MOVE FOOL! These are the ones that died it like they are too dumb to move!

  • Exactly!

I just CANT understand WHY THOSE PEOPLE STAY FILMING AND DONT RUN!! its so stupid, damn.

  • Cause if you survive, your movie goes on TV, and you get paid, naturally.

  • If youre almost dying or in big danger i guess you dont think in money.

    That people its just... Stupid.

  • Well, I suppose there's a feeling of sublimity as well. If, for instance, there was a major eruption and I felt I couldn't escape, I'd probably just watch.

That is one reason why people love to see the lava flows on Hawaii, or visit a vast desert; the feeling of being powerless before nature. It's a thrill.

  • Well, in that youre right. Its amazing watch the power of the nature

  • who knew what a tsunami looked like i would have been curious too. Jeez give this man a break.
