For a normal player it is difficult so see, that after 13.fxe5 dxe5 the protected passpawn on d5 was not able to play any active or decisive role during the game and that the weakness on b6 could not be attacked by white. Bobby Fischer was the greatest chess player of all.

Great shame he never clashed with an in- form karpov to defend his title. We will never know what would have happened. Had they clashed, I think fischers continual seeking the initiative and active game plan could have unhinged karpov just as kasparov managed to do in later years.
Spassky was a good player, maybe a great player on his best day. But Fischer was in a league of his own. You don't win 20 consecutive games against the world greatest players without a special gift that can't be learned, trained, or coached. Fisher had that gift, and after Fischer, it left the world.
Why didnt Spassky see through the bishop sacrifice and Retreat his queen to the King This way even though he would lose his queen He would take the opponenets queen and put his night in danger Possibly making the game in his favor. Did he purpously take the bishop or He thought there was nothing left to do? o.o Great game either way
@MathijsVisser3454 Yes. I have seen this game analyzed on chessmaster, in chess books and on this video but I have never seen anyone analyze a refusal of Fischer's Bishop sacrifice. I guess I am to thick of a woodpusher to see the hopelessness of refusing the sac. Yes Fischer gets a passed pawn but accepting the sac is even worse.
1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 does not a Nimzo-Indian make. It requires White to play 3.Nc3, and then 3...Bb4 is now the Nimzo-Indian. If White plays 3.Nf3 or the new 3.a3?!, how do you get a Nimzo-Indian now? You can't.
Anyway, this is my favourite game from the 1972 WC match. When I was an abject beginner, it was a real eye-opener for Fischer to do so many "wrong" (to a beginner) things on purpose: backward pawn on the half-open b-file, giving white a protected passed pawn in the centre, &c.
PS: The opening system is named by many - at least here in the US - after Dr. Robert Hübner. It's called "Hübner Shield" or "Hübner Blockade", stuff like that. White playing the Knight to f3 early is now considered bad against Hübner setups, and instead they favour play involving (usually) deploying the Knight Ne2~Ng3.
BTW, this type of play predates Hübner, just like the "Najdorf" predates Najdorf (see Opočensky). He did a lot to analyse and popularise it, though.
Don't you think it's kind of funny, that if you had called the Soviet Champion "mentally fucked up" back in the seventies, your precious Soviet Russia would have likely thrown you into a gulag? And you knock "capitalism" and free society? O.o
How is mentioning the fact that Fischer tried to get as much money as possible a knock on capitalism or free societies? As far as Spassky's mentality is concerned, I doubt anyone responding to this vid could beat him over the board on his worst day.
Yup. Dunno if you've ever read a book or sg about Fischer. Tho he was a fantastic chess player, he was a seriously antisocial person. He and his lawyer always tried to get more and more money, no cameras, less viewers etc. (and, since the games were played on Iceland, the locals desperately needed the money, thus weren't able to reject Fischer, since otherwise h would've leaved. He tried to do exactly the same against Karpov, but he failed). So that's why Spassky was fucked up mentally...
Fischer's genius is that he makes finding the best move look simple and obvious. What's the big deal about chess, I say? Then I try to play the same way, and no matter how hard I try, I get crushed like a bug on a windshield.
you do a great work, BUT i highly recommend you use a better software because us who are not that experts kinda get lost when you move the pieces too fast because they kinda lag. I recommend chess pawn, very smooth and light moves.
Anyhow, I learn a lot from your videos. Thanks for posting.
Sorry i think i didnt get the message through correctly, the speed he explains is fine, i just get lost for example when he makes 4 moves in a snap because the SOFTWARE is so slow it doesnt record the move well, suddenly all the pieces dissapear, but only in a few moves. Sorry, but i DO appreciate this videos.
That was epic.

This is a wonderful video! You explain the game well, and enjoyed it very much. It was used as an example on Yahoo Answers -- Keep up the good work!

What would have happened if spassky didnt take the bishop bait at the end?!! This was not discussed.
simoncuming41 2 years ago
If Spassky does not take the pawn bait, Fischer will take the bischop on D1. White is forced to take back whereafter the pawn on e4 will fall.

then he'd be down two pawns and lose endgame...doesn't bode well either way after Qc2 blunder

Dd3-c2 was major mistake from Spassky.
Maybe Dd3-e3 ,with idea Bd1-a5 and De3-c5+(compensation are the two strong pawns on c and d lines).

Spassky is the opposite of players like Fischer and Capablanca, who have a hardened, punitive style.

i wouldn't be able to confidently sacrafice pawn structure early game and hold it. Fischer's awesome, I love his style.

But then again, those of us who are good players get bored when every simple tactic is explained and the game moves at a snail's pace.
Post the game at whatever speed you like and it will be appreciated by some and not appreciated by others.
PS. RIP Bobby.

I don't understand the point of Ne2+ - it just seems to lose a piece here for nothing to play Bxa4 if White had played Qb1
