i own a stabilizer similar to this, and i have a problem with the fact that you pretty much can't turn the camera with it... i think thats just the way these stabilizers function, does anyone have a solution to this? i was thinking about maybe just making a fig rig as this allows for more agile camera movements but would sacrifice some of the stability.... if anyone has a better way to have a stabilizer that can turn please reply
you need a wireless follow focus system/electronic follow focus. So that you have a remote to a motor pulling your focus for you while you keep your hands free from the camera.
@davidlanning2 It's not all that limiting. Unless you want a short DoF, then it works very well. Also, imo, a short DoF does not look very good with moving/flying shots so you really aren't all that limited. If you set the aperature to about 13 with an 18mm lens, and the focus to infinity, everything from 4ft-infinity is in focus.
I bought video camera stabilizer and it is absolute crap.
You can only adjust the camera position back and forth and since the mounting hole is off center on DSLRS, the balance is completely off. The only way to counteract this is to have a super heavy weight (shown in the video) but this doesnt make it a good stabilzer, its still off balanced. This thing costs about $100 bucks but spend a bit more for something that actually works! i sent mine back for a full refund.
I have it and love it but notice in the video he does not make any turns, thats basically the only problem with this thing, when you make turns you have to make the nice and slow otherwise your camera will keep spinning when you go straight again because its on a ball bearing but with some practice you will get better at turns and you will get shots like the one he showed us in the video!
I own one but I don’t use it. I bought it from the Uk and i live in New Jersey. I Ordered it and they shipped it just fine no problems. I just don’t use because i recently purchased a Cavision shoulder rig selling this stabilizer if anyone is interest in buying it email at hoffman.jusinllc@gmail.com.

this is a scam I tried to buy it a couple times and they never sent it or answered any of our email and phone calls this product doesn't exist anymore!!!!!!!!!!!!.
@TheHazzer12 wait entry level?? that looks just like movie quality! how long can it film? theres alotta of great cameras out there like this but they can only film like 10 secs of stuff.
@xcode394 It can film upto about 12 minutes. It record 1080p at 24 frames per second or 30 frames per second. Also can film at 720p at 60 frames per second (great for slow motion).
@xcode394 You want a Class 10 SDHC Card. I use an 8GB Sandisk card. It's about $24 with shipping on Ebay. The camera is capable of very filmlike images. It's the little brother of the Canon 5D Mark II, which is about $2,500 for the body only and was used to shoot the entire season finale of "House" on Fox. BTW, you can use a 4GB card, but make sure it's at least class 6 (preferably class 10). You will be able to record about 12 minutes of footage.
I tried to put one of these together with much frustration and distrust of the design. I'm using the Cam Caddie Scorpion to much success capturing some difficult shots.
Shaky video stabilizer ( jello effect) is due to the type of lens you have on it, please don't discourage a camera because of something you don't fully know about. I know because I sell them and the DSLR packages are meant first for still pictures, then film. but just keep in mind it anyone plans to buy one buy the bods and lens separate the stock lens are usually very cheep,
Looks pretty good, I've been using the Cam Caddie scorpion and it seems like it can capture the same quality shots but i can also add lights and mics and monitors. How much is this thing? I paid $38 for my cam caddie.
thats a Hague steadicam stabilizer. for 130$. cheaper than most and made in UK or was it england. Works decent but don't expect miracles like a real merlin
@mazhas08 But the handle thing is loose so you kill any shock, but that means if you want to make a corner, you still have to touch the camera what probably leads to a shake effect
How does a stabilizer work, i never understood how it stops the video from wiping or stretching or whatever it does when you turn quickly. Some please help with an explanation. THANKS!! WOO! :)
@bangbangboogybaby it's physics and mechanics, the bottom 'weight' is the key of all (to counter balance the weight of the camera on top) the handling part is 'free to move' because of that, then the connection between handling part and under-camera is also important to 'smoth' movements or similar...
@OIyouLITTLEherbert the whole idea of a steadycam is to never actually touch the camera. you painstakingly balance your camera on top and then only hold the handle. zooming, focus rack, or adjusting anything will jar the camera nullifying the product. if you change a lens then you need to rebalance the whole system. if you're using a kit lens, everytime you zoom on or out, the whole system needs to be rebalanced. good luck
What's the point? The Canon's lack of auto focus makes it practically useless for video, except for under perfect conditions where you can actually see enough detail in the screen to manual focus. Ugghhh.... get an A33/55 instead.
@jpippinator Not nonsense at all. Canon's focus system during live view mode is absolutely dismal. It's contract based and it hunts and seeks, and often misses its target, having to restart the whole hunt-seek-guess over again. It has to raise the brightness and contrast levels in order for it to detect the sharpness, interfering even more with a video.
The new Sony Alphas however, is capable of a much better focus system. It's fast, effective, and precise.
@disgustika That's great. But the 5D is *very* expensive and still does not offer usable auto focus during recording. If you're really good at manually focusing then fine. But I'm sure it's easy to mess up and end having bits out of focus here and there. It also takes all your concentration.
Not at all practical for consumer use. Try recording the kids running around inside and outside in the yard.
The only decent choice seems to be the Sony a33/55 if you're on a budget and want pictures too.
@a1mint Canon's lack of auto focus makes it practically the best dslr with video. Professionals BARELY use auto focus and will gladly pay a thousand bucks for manual focusing. AI auto focus can't beat manual focus.
@beneaththeairwaves On Sony you can turn off the auto focus, and then you can manual focus to your heart's content.
Granted that video actually looks better on the 5D and T2i/550D even, than what the Sony produces, and the manual options and the the digital zoomed in VGA, and the true 60 fps on the 720p, gives the Canon the upper hand in everything - except - that DAMN lack of auto focus - making it completely useless for family use.
@a1mint I totally agree. Canon dslrs with video is not for family use. It is a PRO video camera where you can manual control everything. Sony is more suited for normal use. And its autofocus really comes in handy when need to follow the subject. I'm not biased. Actually, I have a Sony HDR-UX1 as a backup video cam when my 7D overheats.
Overall, considering the design and functions of Canon HDSLRs are pro level, the lack of autofocus is not a handicap. It's just PROs don't need them.
@beneaththeairwaves So, for situations where the focusing is generally relaxed, and if you're a pro, doing things like make documentaries or shoot commercials, by all means, the Canon is the better choice. I've tried both, and the Canon is much nicer.
But the Sony is also nice. You give up quite a bit. But it is simply not possible to track around running toddlers and pets in the backyard using manual focus without a constant hunting and seeking and off focus.
@beneaththeairwaves But Sony is making some leaps forwards. Sony is Minolta. Make no mistake about it, Canon is not more capable than Sony. Sony is doing things that outdoes Canon, and vice versa, none is superior over the other. That goes for BOTH photo and video.
Btw, as for pure photo quality, I could not prove that either one is better than the other. Any real advantages can only be achieved through lenses at this point. They're both just that good.
@ThePoonFish Sony VG10 is pretty good. The Sony a33 and a55 and nex are the only exchangeable lens cameras on the market that does auto focus properly.
And you'd be surprised how good Sony lenses are. Sony bought Minolta and continues their expertise.
Sony alpha mounts are compatible with Minolta AF mounts. There are a lot of really good lenses available for the Sonys, like the Minolta beercans, and the famous secret handshake lens (28-135), with unmatchable quality just about.
rrrr, but......to be able to use manual focus properly and easily, a monitor screen of 5" or above is needed to get a true easy to use manual focus. When using the usual 3" or so lcd's its tricky to be sure you have the manual focus correct, so AI aotofocus can be better at times.
Although having said that, i agree that if it can be monitored well, manual focus is unbeatable.

@a1mint
SONY have their fingers in all pies and are unable to concentrate on video.
Whereas on trhe other hand, LENSES are CANON's thing !!!

@ThePoonFish But not trying to knock Canon either. I've had the T2i with the 18-135 lens and it's a *very* good combination. An amazing lens.

@beneaththeairwaves
rrrr, but......to be able to use manual focus properly and easily, a monitor screen of 5" or above is needed to get a true easy to use manual focus. When using the usual 3" or so lcd's its tricky to be sure you have the manual focus correct, so AI aotofocus can be better at times.
Although having said that, i agree that if it can be monitored well, manual focus is unbeatable.

If you want a pocket-sized camera stabilizer for pocket video cameras check out the readysteady. It's inexpensive and really works.

do you think this could stabilize a 60D?

I would like to see you turn and walk into one of those rooms. Is that even possible or will the camera still point at the bathroom?
