  • That's so sweet (^_^)

  • On the clothing issue though: Wearing a bathrobe in broad daylight, dude? Why push the envelope? We girls have a hard enough time figuring out the role of our devalued sexual identity under a patriarchal religious system. Please don't make it any harder for us.

    ;-)

  • Nicely done video on the whole.

On the clothing issue though: Why push the envelope? We guys have a hard enough time keeping pure. Please don't make it any harder for us.

  • I thought this was well done. I have plenty of guy friends who remind me of the "cowardly" guy. In watching him I felt as though I was watching some of my friends talk to a girl who they have had a crush on for some time, it is painful lol. However this video puts a nice comedic spin on it and the guy wins out in the end giving hope to others. Personally, I did not see a modesty issue. I know other God-honoring girls who would wear a similar outfit to go jogging. I enjoyed watching this. Thanks!

  • Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed it! -Luke

  • Your story is cheesy with no value. You seem to be promoting the same idea that Hollywood has been pounding into our brains for years: that guys are either dumb cowards or smart jerks and that the girls that catch the guys are independent, sexy and look like Barbie.

I couldn't tell the difference between this and something a non-Christian just starting in Hollywood would put out.

  • You don't like Barbie?

  • Not especially.:)

  • Cheesy? Yes. "No value"? I disagree. Comedy lets us look at ourselves with our guards down while we laugh. Then we see areas where we should grow. In short, I think our message is the same as yours: Guys, step up because there are great girls out there.

As for looking like Hollywood, I'll take that as a compliment. I am glad that we can produce God-honoring videos that aren't so "Christian" that only Christians will watch it. But yes, we are still learning how to tell a good story. -Luke

  • I guess the modesty issue and the cowardly guy distracted me from the comedic side of the story.:) I see what you mean though. The thing is, I didn't think it was God-honoring. But if you think so, that's fine. It's between you and God.

  • You don't like Barbie? Hey the better our actress looks the better our film looks.

The clothes were chosen for compostion purposes.Check out 00:11 the tri color composition is used to draw your eye in and bring you to the next point, the Toast, 00:13 which then reflects the previous composition.

We also figured this was the outfit a girl would wear on a warm summers day to go jogging. Since she posed no objection we went with it.

  • I have to agree that your actress is very beautiful. So is mine, but I didn't dress her in a skimpy tank-top and zoom in on her bare tummy to get the full effect. Just because the beauty is there doesn't mean you have to show everything. She would have been just as gorgeous and impressive (and still fit for composition and story purposes) in something else. Most Christian young ladies would not wear that to go jogging in. I should know since I am one and I DO go jogging on warm summer days.:)

  • I think to say that "Most Christian young ladies would not wear that to go jogging in" is a pretty generalizing statement. I do not believe it is bad for a "Christian" girl to wear a tank top. I know many that do and they aren't less holy for it.

The shot of the tummy was not there to give a full reign of our actress's beauty. It was there for color and compositional purposes as stated in my previous comment.

  • Would I have to put a "Christian" messege in my short to be tagged as a "Christian" filmmaker? This short was made to get further practice in film making. Sure our story may not be deep with profound meaning, but,we wanted a happy simple story that people could relate too. I'm sorry if our character was insulting to you but we wanted to portray him as the sweet soft fellow.

  • If it's too blatantly Christian it will be cheesy and turn people off. But at the same time, I think that a movie starring a young lady in skimpy clothing and a silly guy who is obviously only interested because she looks good is NOT what Christ taught. We're trying to replace Hollywood, not imitate them. LOL! I see. The "sweet, soft fellow" isn't good for much else except to make people laugh at his stupidity.:) I guess you might as well put him to SOME good use.:)

  • FWIW I didn't get the impression that the guy was "only interested because she looks good" (by this I infer that you meant 'looks good in skimpy clothes). The idea I got was that he's had a secret crush on her for a while and is trying to muster the courage to make his feelings known.

"Christian" filmmaking — Opinion varies widely about the definition of this term :-P. The judges accepted your entry — for this contest, that should be enough.

  • Regarding the actress's clothing: Though I would have preferred to see her dressed a bit more modestly, I didn't find it inappropriate to the story (though I do agree that you had other viable options).

All content discussions aside, nice work! Funny story, nice color, and great composition. :-)

  • Thank you for your thoughts! I'm glad you liked it.

Yes our actor had liked the girl for awhile and was mustering the courage to go talk to her. It wasn't just because she dressed "skimpy"

    -)_-.

  • Thanks so much! -Luke

  • That was our intention in the story. Glad you picked up on it!

Yes, once you put the "Christian" label on anything things tend to start getting odd. -Luke

  • My goal isn't to replace Hollywood. Hollywood knows how to make films. Theres alot we can learn from Hollywood. Granted we should not do something simple because Hollywood does but its important to learn why they do things.

My Goal is to make good films.

Yes our "sweet, soft fellow" was good for making people laugh. I don't see how he was stupid. In my opinion he was pretty smart because he actually took the time to figure out what "skimpy" clothed girl would like.

    -)_-.

  • Wow... you keep writing back with more and more pointless arguments! The film makers were NOT trying to make him interested in her only because of her looks. And the tank top she wore does NOT classify as "skimpy" in any way or form. It was an athletic outfit for an athletic girl who happens to jog every morning. period. As for replacing hollywood, I'm not totally sure what you mean. Hollywood will always be hollywood. Maybe christian film makers can just influence it a certain direction.

  • Here is my honest opinion. Sorry to be so negative.

I thought the lighting was ok, but nothing out of the ordinary.

I see what you were trying to do with the green kitchen and greenish cheerios, but it seems just a bit much. (Or was that not on purpose?)

  • Negative feedback can be good. One can not get better if one does not know what was wrong.

You are absolutely right: The lighting of her jogging outside was pretty bad. The kitchen may have been too greenish, but that was before the sun came up and everything in that scene was... well... green.

I personally love the lighting of her in her kitchen. -Luke

  • You might want to attend the San Antonio Independent Christian Film Academy and Festival next January '09. I'm sure you would enjoy it and learn tons.:)

  • We submitted a film to the SAICFF (2007) but didn't make it in (a modern retelling of Hosea). It was probably our content [smile]. When I get around to finishing the BTS I'll post it on YouTube.

If we had received feedback I'm sure we would have learned a ton! -Luke

  • Thanks! That was done on a dolly I designed and built for about $30. I'm going to get the directions for making your own up sometime soon at Production-Now. -Luke

  • Thought this was great... very professionally done. Thanks for the comment on mine.

Question: What camera did you use? Color and lighting looked awesome.

  • It'd better be. That was my Canon XLH1.

Thanks! I'm here to help on any future projects you do! -Luke

    = )

  • The shots are color are great!

    -)_-.

  • Cool coloring in this vid, and the characters. I think we can all relate to fear of rejection - specially when a pretty girl is involved. :p

  • Thanks for the feedback! Glad you liked it. -Luke

  • Wow... I am really impressed with the way this turned out! The dolly shot is amazing... glad we did it!
