Yields from the Bakken shale have rarely exceeded 2 or 3% (EROEI), with 1% being common. In other words, you need to use ~99% external energy just to get 1% back. This is explained over and over again to Dittoheads but they refuse to acknowledge it, citing vague claims like "the technology will improve!" No, it won't improve that much! You have to cook shale to free the oil and there is no fooling the laws of physics.

New estimates by the operators in North Dakota is much higher than the USGS predictions. (more like 10 to 20 bbl) The USGS probably got it wrong as it was their first attempt at estimating such a resource like the Bakken. Rig count is right about 150 and plans are to try to double that within 2 years. Each rig drills a new well every 1 to 3 months. Once things calm down on the Bakken they will probably start to work on the Tyler Formation which should produce about 1/3 as much.
