VERY fortunate to have made it. Tori had the crowd eating out of her hand before she played a note. A few rarities and selections from her currant 'solstice' album, as she called it. Plus a few funny tales and some fine improvisation when faced with certain technical difficulties, which betrayed her now vast live experience. hats off to her. A real pro!!
I think this seasonal album has brought back some aspets of Tori that were out of sight for a while: 1) self-control (the songs are 12 and not 1000, just right); 2) Winter's Carol is a ballad of great quality, on the same level as Jackie's Strength or Horses; 3) the piano is back as a protagonist (and also the harpsichord, a bit). Hopefully the next decade will see a return of Tori on a level comparable to the 90's (and with this, I don't mean the same type of music but same quality).
@riccardosaga I suppose I take an exception to this because I believe the quality this decade has only increased. I love the fact that her albums are more than 12 tracks, I look at them as experiences, double albums almost, something I'm more than willing to take on and enjoy. I don't care if she plays the harpsichord again, or tries to emulate Jackie's Strength or Horses, I'm open to her experimentation, and I believe the new records are of higher quality than her earlier work. I'm not alone.
@FCignelli I haven't said that she's emulating Horses or Jackie's Strength, I have said that Winter's Carol is on the same level of musical quality. Other ballads from this last decade like Sleeps with Butterflies, Ribbons Undone or Roosterspoor Bridge are simply not; they are rather conventional and are characterized by poor production. Furthermore, the fact that the last albums were huge augmented the risk of having bad songs included: 500 miles and Not Dying Today are plain kitsch.
I get a little sick and tired about listening to people post such lazy and uninformed, sometimes mean spirited comments. I think if you're expecting Tori to continue to release the same music she did when she was 28, well then, that's quite tragic. She's 46, and I believe if you grow with her you'll really appreciate The Beekeeper, ADP and AATS. I think they're all fantastic albums, and I'll take her talent any day over the substandard efforts of many of her contemporaries.
The song's nothing special, I started to lose interest in Tori around Scarlet's Walk. She looks like she's had botox or some sort of cosmetic work done. Personally I don't think she needed it.
I agree with everything you said. Scarlett's Walk was her last great album. Although, you should really give this one a chance, it's pretty good. And ADP had a few good tracks on it.
Watching her perform just isn't the same post-botox.
I wouldn't be as generous to say Scarlett's Walk was a great album, it had its moments (Carbon, Virginia are my personal fav's) But I'll always be interested to check out her work, her lyrical content is (usually) fantastic. I love Siren and Butterfly. People compare Tori to Kate Bush but I think that's kinda lazy, I don't know maybe they're the musical Pepsi/Coke challenge. I'm a bit drunk so I'll leave it there for now. Goodnight and goodluck x
Beautiful song, very christmassy sounding hehe <3

Oh, and it's okay to get older. Don't worry, you'll all be 46 one day, if you're lucky.
