I did the same thing but on my modded xbox with emulators and a ps2 guitar hooked up with a ps2 to xbox adapter I bought back in the day. I got pretty far on mario, but I like to have the strum buttons move the character. It's really fun to play D-pad Hero with! = P
@SpeedStacking1 You can totally do this. I use the ps2 guitar on my xbox to play mario and d-pad hero. Controllers send input the same way you just need the right adapter.

It's similar to Guitar Hero; it's a homebrew game. You can actually buy the cart from the NES Dump too.
