  • BTW: my local machine shops presses in Cam bearing for $35.

  • Good video...Got a question though. Why not go with a .010 or .020 overbore to really clean up the cyclinder walls?

  • Great video, and it's around $100 to have ur bearings pressed in

  • Great video, I will be doing a engine of the same size, but the one i am working on now is a V6 GM 3.1 The problem is there is no room to install the camshaft bearing like you can with a V8. You can't slip the bearing next to the spot it needs to be taped into, and then drive it with an install tool, Any help would be great.

  • Nice vid. But you definitely need a bigger hammer :)

  • Great Video! I am a mechanic with 25 years experience and that was the best cam bearing lesson I have ever seen. You are a born teacher, great job. Did you use a dial mic to check the cylinders?

  • Good video!

I'm happy to know that I'm not the only one who spends time looking for a tool that I've just layed down. It gets tougher when you get older!

Don't forget to let the cat out.

    Thanks.

  • How do u remove the cam bearings? do u have to take it to a shop? or is there a tool you can rent/make?

  • Once you had the installer mounted, and ready to install the bearing, you should have moved the Camera to show at Least what it looks like just before knocking it into place, For those who have never seen this,, it would have helped.. Just a tip if you want MORE Subscribers,,

  • Cranks aren't supposed to lay on their side I thought...

  • If you replace a stock cam with a bigger cam do you have to change the timing of the engine?

  • I recommend "NOT" cutting the ridge out with a hone. a ridge cutter is available for the job.

  • Do you put oil on the bearing before you put it in

  • btw, 400's have shitty oiling systems. the FE engines(352-360-390-406-410-427-428) are superior engines as far as durability is concerned. the only advantage of the "385" engines (your 400) is a relatively lightweight block casting. you should match the main bearing shells to the block oil holes with a dremel tool.this improves oil flow to the rods. great videos---keep them coming!

  • i have used a "bottle brush" type hone on questionable bores like yours with excellent results. we call it a "dingleberry hone" . works 10x better than any rigid hone. bought mine at NAPA for $110.00. money well spent. used it many times. do try one-you will never use a rigid hone again.

  • Ok i no its been months since this aired but i have a question too.I have a 6.5 turbo and oil pressure is abot 35 pis cold start and then warmed it drops to around 20 at hyw sppeed but on idel warmed up its at 5 psi,ugggggg.160,000 miles on the motor and serviced to the hilt, could it be cam bearings and do i have to take the dam motor out to do this or can i do it in the truck? thanx for any help.great vid by the way.

  • great vid man im building a 351m for my 79 f150 4x4 and im installing the new cam and bearings in the morning, and ive never done it before...thanks your video was very helpful

  • You should use a ridge reamer to cut the ring ridge down on the cylinder, and not the cylinder hone. It's also good to replace the expansion plugs, they tend to corrode and leak over time. Lastly, you should remove to oil galley plugs, and use an oil galley brush to clean them out. Just my two cents worth, of tips.

  • tool amnesia I love it !!!happens to me all the time!!!great vid very informative.

  • What kind of torque wrench do you use? Would you recommend it? Great video series by the way. :)

  • @reptar1994 all of my torque wrenches are snap on and yes they make a good tool, Ive just had some troubles getting them to honor their warranty

  • @wagner59270 Cool man! Thanks!

  • would bbad cam bearings casue low oild pressure when ideling?, my turck goes down to 20psi whe ideling and up to 40 when moveing, would that cam bearings cause that?

  • @youdragon could possibly, any loose bearing surface could cause a lack of oil pressure but in all honesty i wouldnt call 20psi bad

  • thanks wagner!!! video helped a lot! keep up the videos and keep em comn!

  • nice 390

  • nope that is a 400 but it did replace the 390 in 1974 LOL

  • ah i stand corrected good vids anyway man im workin on a 89 f 250 lifted 9 inches 351 windsor c 6 38.5 inch groundhawgs waitin to here your bad news hope the engine didnt burn up keep up the good work

  • ahh shit... you had me all excited LOL still a good choice though

  • ahh nice... cant go wrong with a 390

  • Just out of curiosity, could you by chance show the cylinder hone tool when you make the next video. That would be great Wayne. Thanks.

  • I already have all the videos shot and the motor put together and running but I will try to make a point of showing it in a future video

  • stridetool(dot)com/tools/autospecialty/hones_group(dot)gif

  • So, we're gonna need a wrench, Where did I put that? HUuhh where did I put it? Ahhh How come I keep loosing the tools that I was just holding... lol funny it always need to happen ahaha ! Nice video Wrangler!

  • Some blocks have two holes in the cam journals and only one hole in the cam bearing. In that case make sure you line up with the hole that is coming from the main bearing passage.

  • this is true

  • Well your first mistake is you are rebuilding a FORD motor ( here in Ohio we call them boat anchors). Just playing with ya They rebuild all about the same. Good job so far.

  • LMFAO everyones a comedian huh LOL

  • All jokes aside, You are doing a great job keep the great video's coming.

  • Hey great video! and you know why your forgettin where you placed your tools, its because your a bit flustered and focused with talking to the camera. Good stuff man, keep it up.

  • Awesome! Haven't done a rebuild myself in 18 years. Really cool to watch you work. How do you measure the diameter of your bores?

  • inside mic

  • Of all the stuff I have, I am lacking inside mics. I like intra mics(Etalon or Browne&Sharpe) but they are spendy. I only have two that cover .250-.375, the rest of the time I use telescope gages and OD mics. I like your channel better than anything on TV! "We Like It".

  • This is GREAT!! i wanted to learn this engine rebuiling tut. how to. and what ever

I just got 1 thing to say:

Try to get a "over head cam" view so we can see the engine work and how your hands are working in their

  • Nice. Very Nice! I have yet to see any mechanic not put down a tool right there and miss it like that. The best is when its in your hand and you can't find it. Makes me cuse every F***ing time it happens. lol

  • Good video! I have an installer that looks just like that. I hope those cylinder walls are better than the camera makes them look. I enjoy your videos.

  • good video wagner

  • you look funny without your hat

  • i wish i did cam bearings when i took my engine out 5 years ago :(

uh, how did you get the old bearings out? what brand is that tool you are using. i need one :)

  • Good video! nice job... 5*****

  • I generally let the machine shop clean, hone, and install the cam bearings. It doesn't cost that much and it saves a lot of time. Of course, I don't rebuild enough engines to justify the equipment necessary to do that either. Good video!

  • Oh yea, glad to see your bores came out better. That last one looks a bit shitty but it should run.I just hope it doesn't chew your rings up.

  • Try and get a camera person please so we can see right where you're going all the time.

I do the same damn thing.I set something down right in front of me, and spend a half hour looking for it.I swear I spend more time looking for my tools than actually doing the job.

  • Whats you job?

  • mechanic and rancher

  • Excellent 5/5... youll get metal shavings and cats meowing when you hone your cylinders, lol!

  • Wayne, do you put any oil on the bearings before you drive them into the sleeves or do you just go in dry? I think you must go in dry as I didn't see you put anything on the outside of the bearings. I know you lube them up when inserting the cam, but I didn't know if you recommend a little lube when driving them in to the cam journals. Otherwise, keep going, we like it. Waiting on the next episode... -Stone

  • nope no oil on the bearings before installation... I ve always worried about spinning one so thats why

  • great vid, how hard is it to replace a rear main seal on an awd explorer with the engine still in and woul i need to pull the crank out

  • nop you wouldn have to pull the crank but you would have to pull the tranny out... personally Id just bite the bullet and pull he motor to do that one

  • i would if i had a bigger garage and a hoist i got 2 jack stands and a 2/12 ton floor jack

  • great vid tho

  • great cam bearing install only i sugest arubber mallet insted of body hammer. and be sure all the oil pan bolt holes are free of thread defect.. fucken noobs and over tighning back inthe 80 hahahah

  • oh heavens no Im not saying that Im just saying that it is a suitable substitute on a motor with very little wear or for a mechanic with a tight budget that needs to make something run, if done properly a re-ring is an excellent budget method of giving an old motor new life

  • cast iron rings? 3 peice oil rings?

  • 2 cast compression and a 3 peice oil

  • Comment removed

  • thats my top choice , i use 200 grit hones

some times il clean up with rougher hone

    depending on bore,

  • how much power you be making ford rocks

  • ahh prolly around 200 went pretty stock on this one

  • i love the series so far wayne =D6******

  • Haha i "loose" tool all the time, and its sitting in right there. good vid man, im waiting on the next

  • 1st, sweet vid wayne c ant wait to see it done
