Bring back a heavy boxer (At least 220 pound guy tho) not that welter weight stuff like now but HW or super HW-boxer that has this guy's moves and boxing is interesting again!

Hate him, or love him. Roy will always go down as one of the most entertaining fighters, his care free jokes in the ring at times made him look untouchable. haters will always hate in what ever he does, but all and all, at his peak was the best pound for pound boxer in the world.
my dad is a chiropractor and one of his patients owns a boxing gym where Roy Jones Jr. trains sometimes so I got to see him train and met him he is the nicest guy ever one of the best days of my life in fact it was the same gym in this video in little california
my dad is a chiropractor and one of his patients owns a boxing gym where Roy Jones Jr. trains sometimes so I got to see him train and met him he is the nicest guy ever one of the best days of my life
@royjonesjr1 you're supposed to shadowbox in the way in which you fight; Jones fights in a certain rhythm and this just happens to work for him, but it wouldn't necessarily suit everyone's style
Hopkins relied on the very, very sound base skills as a boxer and still does. He was never as fast as Jones, Trinidad, De La Hoya but his boxing basics and experience are as good if not better hence his longevity. Wonder why you don't see 42 year olds running at the Olympics. You can roll out Carl Lewis, Lindford Christie, Donovan Bailey etc and get them doing as much and many polymetrics and front squats as possible but they are never going to win at that highest level again.
My God where do Roy's legs go? He needs Front Squats and Box Jumps and maybe Plyometrics in his life. Maybe that will but a little spring back in those legs because while Roy is 42 and his hands are 30, those legs are 55.
@rherbe2 Well you have to remember that he mostly used headmovement/quick counters rather than his legs. Yeah he used his legs to jump in and out but he mostly countered with left hooks while slipping
That's very true. Jones was very quick, not necessarily fast. His mobility in comparison to someone such as Muhammad Ali was very average. He wasn't reputed for being fleet of foot, but rather slick and elusive. In that sense, I do not believe he'd recapture his once unrivaled reflexes by doing sprints or squats. Reflexes are based solely on synapses, and your brain's ability to communicate with your body. That decreases with age. You cannot rebuild the nervous system.
@FinesseCool Your mostly wrong. In boxing when someone is fast, they are talking about hand speed not his fleet of foot!! He was also quick which was his explosiveness! His agility, mobility and foot speed were also above average which made him elusive. His road work (running and sprints) is for endurance. Plus skills, drills and physical training DO increase reflexes which are NOT solely based on synapses. But you are correct about one thing, as you age you do lose it......
I wouldn't say that I am wrong as much as I would say that you are uninformed. Plyometrics, and sprints are meant to increase the amount of fast-twitch muscle, which is the cause of Roy's explosiveness, and quickness. Despite this, no matter the amount of fast-twitch muscle, unless your brain communicates with your body, your body will not be able to respond with the quickness necessary to counter, ergo retaining handspeed (which Roy has), but not his reflexes.
In addition to this, there are various types of speed. Yes, Roy Jones Jr had (and still has) incredibly swift hands, but his feet were not the foundation of his defense. Roy's head movement (which was sensational) was what attributed to his sound defensive ability (and also his reflexes). If you compare his foot movement, and dancing to Ali, or Holmes, or even Ray Leonard, it is minimal. Granted, it wasn't necessary; it was not his style. Roy was still one of the best. Peace.
@FinesseCool his feet were the foundation of his defence because they were the foundation of his offense. How you gonna land a leaping left hook with no footwork?
I never said he had no footwork. Obviously you need footwork to execute the various unorthodox maneuvers Roy Jones Jr used as his signature styled offense, but the fact you consider Roy's best defense his offense renders your statement incorrect. Roy's best defense was his defense. His reflexes combined with his head movement were simply fantastical. Did he have footwork? Yes. But he was not a dancer as was a Leonard, Ali or a young Holmes. That was my only point. Peace.
You wouldn't understand my line of thinking unless you possessed a tremendous amount of fast twitch muscles such as Roy and myself. I was a sprinter as you get older you need to do certain things to preserve the power in your legs. Ricky Hatton was famous for using plyometrics and front squats. That's why he was so explosive jumping in and out, EXACTLY WHAT ROY USED TO DO AND WHAT HE NEEDS NOW.
@rherbe2 What a crock of crap. Roy in his prime was exceptionally quick. He's lost that fundamental edge he had over other fighters and now they can touch him...no amount of polymetrics is going to replace the exceptional speed he once displayed. How may 42 year olds do you see competing at the highest level? Very rare. Mosley, Leonard, Ali, Benitez, De La Hoya, Whittaker all succumb to father time..just like Jones. Same will happen to Pac and Floyd if they continue to fight past their prime.
See your a big ole fan with a man crush on Roy, mentally masturbating to his former skills and abilities. Your father time argument is understood but not applicable to point I was trying to make and that is Roy has lost the power in his legs. While its understood his legs will never be the same, training the power back in them would slow down his decline. Hopkins for example does sprints and imagine at 46 he moves much better than one of the most mobile fighters in history.
@rherbe2 Hopkins and Jones are to vastly differing fighters. Hopkins never had Jones reflexes (not even in his prime) in fact few fighters did or ever will have. Roy aged and lost the difference which gave him the edge...his phenomenal speed...and then fighters started catching up with him. In his prime Johnson, Tarver, Lebvedev, Galzaghe, Green got whupped by Jones. As Hopkins did. He's lost the innate skill that gave him the edge. No amount of polymetrics or front squats is bringing that back.
thats wot you call training, you can work out just as good having fun,,im a boxer b4 anyone starts chatting shit,, you can do 10-2min rounds on the reaction ball on your own working real hard, or you can do it blasting the music with 2 off your friends on the other side, and even tho it dont look as hard cuz your having fun with it but it is and better for you because you have them as friendly competition..
On May 22 1993 a 27 year old Bernard Hopkins stepped in the ring and was dominated by a a man with a busted hand who had an off night. 17 years later at the age of 44 he out boxed the #1 ranked light heavyweight in the world. Roy's critics will say, "he never fought anyone". Bernard Hopkins is someone and that someone has fought some of the best competition in the history of the sport and guess who he said was by far the best fighter he ever fought? That's right, Roy Jones jr. I love Roy's fans.
@bigsleep32 this whole shit about "roy's fans" "floyd's fans" is ridiculous! we're talking about people here i.e. fighters and not horses on a racing track. you're Hopkins fan you dont own him and you have nothing to gain by him winning or losing. Enjoy the fight and get on with your life
@bigsleep32 Roy Jones Jr and Mike Tyson are the best boxers in the hystory of the sport... and i LOVE to watch Roy fight... he was the #1 in the world and still is..
@CarnardP I disagree, roy jones is too fast and hits too hard. And his height would be too much to deal with in my humble opinion. I also thought that Sugar Shane was a complete buzzsaw when he fought at like 140. I thought in his prime at 140 he would've been too much for floyd at 140. just my humble opinion.
i am from germany but i love the amarican boxers how roy jones he is my favorit boxer and because him i go now to the boxing : ) i hope u all understand me :D
all these fighters who make it so far in the sport of boxing are so blessed, because trust me its not as easy as it looks. true athletes! boxing is more mental than physcial. i think , anyway.
@kuken166 its just light training he's just getting his combos in the perfect order then he'll turn them powerful once he's perfected it as he already has haha
