@lloodyMurda while I know that tnt equivalent is just a measure of energy, and can oversimplify the real impact of a bomb, my point came about due to the claim that a 44t tnt fuel air bomb is comparable to a 20kt tnt nuclear bomb, and no manner of blast characteristics is going to narrow that gap.

Nope, if they were really suicidal fanatics, then they would have continued and even get a bomb of their own. The Japanese were tired and out of resources and they were already making plans for a treaty. The Americans only drop the bombs just to fasten Japan's complete surrender and get there before the Russians. Japan under Russia would have been a big blow for Americans during the cold war so in other words this was about territorial control and not about the sake of a nation.

Japan never tried to develop a nuclear weapon. Secondly, Japan had no intentions of surrendering and instead had detailed plans for every man, woman and child to fight to the death rather than surrender.. I didn't say they had a bomb and I didn't say they wanted to surrender. My point was that if they were actually suicidal fanatics, then they wouldn't have stop even after Hiroshima and Nagasaki. They stopped because they had a limit that also could have been reached with an invasion instead of the two bombs. The Russian were going after Japan so did everyone else after Berlin so they had not other choice but to surrender.

Had Japan known there were no more atomic bombs, they wouldn't have surrendered and a protracted and bloody ground war would have resulted, with millions. It's not about, "caring", and I never said that. It was about ending that war. Period. The benefits of over 1 million American soldiers lives and over 15 million Japanese lives by using the atomic bombs was indeed a good result.
