  • Wowzers!! I envy her!! It's also very motivating for me to know that as a beginning knitter I can increase my speed if I put lot more practice into it. Cant wait to be faster 0_0

  • But Hazel Tindall (sp?) IS a 'thrower'! She holds the yarn in her right hand and picks up the sts with the tip of her right needle. I think that her movements are much tighter/closer than Miriam's.

  • Actually there is a Scottish woman that knits faster than this woman....how can there be two worlds fastest knitters lol Still faster than me though

  • If it's so top secret why is it here. Do you know the video can be downloaded and then slowed down?

  • Wow! But I wish they would have shown her purling also. It would be interesting to see if the World's Fastest Knitter can also whiz through a dreaded purl row.

  • Haha! Now with the slow down button on certain videos, including this one, maybe we can all see her technique...

  • I should think this just takes constant practice, I agree with alospm about the teacher spirit

  • I guess she doesn't want to really share her technique, 'cause then one of us could challenge her "title." Not bloody likely! We just want to knit faster.

  • I wish I could knit that fast.

  • One thing that I love about other knitters is the "teacher spirit" we almost all have that seems to cause us to want to help other knitters be the best we can be. Having a "top secret" technique feels a bit chilly to me...

Maybe that's just my jealous side speaking. There's nothing that I want more right now than to be finished with all the mittens I'm knitting for Christmas :P

  • Hm. Well bully for Miriam!

  • Wow That´s fast!

  • This is just too cool, have tried it and now love it. skippylou100

  • I don't mean to sound horrible, but what's the point of speed knitting when you can go a hundred times faster than that on a knitting machine??? Usually when I hand knit I just want to sit down and relax, I'm not too fussed about making a jumper in one evening. If I wanted to do that, I would machine knit it...I also find it so weird that she doesn't want to share this technique...what's the point of knowledge of any kind if you can't share it with the rest of the world???That's just sad for me

  • WOW :D !!

  • i bet you she knit that shirt she's wearing in 3 hours

  • I noticed her speed, for sure. But I also noticed when she would make a mistake and sat there trying to adjust for that. I'll take my relaxing speed with no mistakes over speed knitting any day. With that said, I would like to learn to hold the yarn over my left index finger like I see many women do. :)

Great job at being a record setter :)

  • what is the point of it????? Enjoy your knitting surely it's relaxation - it what we women want!

  • This woman is a machine 0.0

  • I think it would be fun to be able to knit that fast. I mean I wouldn't be racing all the time, but I would love to be able to get more accomplished in the same relaxed knitting hour. Wouldn't you?

  • She is using continental and danish purl the yarn is always on the back

  • I takes me about 45 minutes to make a scarf without binding off (i'm a beginner teehee!) it probably takes her 15 minutes for a sweater

  • WOW.... Amazing... But I think this is only Purl, what about a fantasy stitch????

  • Wow that's quick. I think the tips are great. Keeping your movements to a minimum.

  • She is knitting so fast, that you can't really see her method. Is would have been nice to have her slow down and show her knitting from a few different angles.

  • @theladybaltimore Unfortunately, Miriam's technique is top secret! Which is why there aren't any slower shots or different angles, though she was kind enough to share tips and tricks for knitting faster in general. It might not bring you up to speed with her, but with practice, you should see your own speed improve.

  • @knitpicks Its very nice to her she share some of her techniques but I think the knitter will be greateful to her if she share her knitting, purling technique top secret to the knitter. If she teach the technique, the world will remember her genration after genration.

hope you will try to film her with her secret in slow motion with diffrent angles.

  • @knitpicks how selfish. to have a "top secret" method of knitting. people should share their knowledge with all.

  • @knitpicks there is no secret at all!!! this is how people in Russia keep hands and fingers to knit. I bet I knit faster then she does. I would advice you to cheek some russian video on youtube. It´s unbelievably easy. really. You can knit and watch TV, I mean you can look at TV screen but continue to use your hands for knitting.

  • @nushkant I agree. There is nothing secret about it at all. If there were some special technique she employed that no one knew of she should be ashamed of herself for not sharing with the community.

  • ...............that was......fast. And incredibly depressing for a beginner knitter. *runs off crying*

  • I wouldn't want to knit that fast, because then knitting stuff would be common in the house. Then it wouldn't be special when you gave a gift to someone.

  • @pandagirl4561 You can just make sure nobody sees you knitting. Then they wouldn't know :D or you can just give knitted items to people who don't live with you (friends etc) , people who'd be less likely to see you knit. I, for one, would love to knit faster and I knit faster than most people I know.

  • @pandagirl4561 Not to mention it doesn't look like fun! One of the great things about knitting is how relaxing and enjoyable it is. This woman is all business...

  • wow... she must be a decendent of the knitting god o_o

  • WOw is all i can say lol

  • Sure would be hard for me to stop and admire my fantabulous work every 5 or 6 stitches doing this......more power to you speed gals, and just sign me "perfectly happy at a snail's pace knitter" :)

  • I've never understood why not everyone is using this method, it's so much faster and easier. That 'thrower' method looks incredibly awkward. I first saw it in England when a woman started knitting next to me on a bus. I wondered what the heck she was doing as I didn't even realise it was the way most people knit in Britain, lol.

  • Wow. ... I'm like knitting impaired or something compared to that knitting speed!

  • whooo! she's FAST!

  • knitting a competition...really? Whats they hurry?

  • I envy this woman....

  • i thought i was fast.....

  • I tried to do the throwing method and it was like writing with my left hand, it felt very awkward. How do you control tension? Since I learned to knit the continental way, I guess I'll stick to it even though I will never achieve competition speed levels.

  • I was knitting for 35 years before I even knew there were different methods. I just learned today that I was doing the continental method.

As for enjoying knitting, I think Miriam enjoys knitting fast just as much as us slower knitters enjoy it. Speed has nothing to do with the enjoyment.

  • Hmmm.... only a demonstration for the continental stitch... what about the throwers? (like me!)

  • @UnseenAndInvisible Unfortunately for throwers, part of Miriam's secret to knitting quickly is using the continental method.

  • @knitpicks well, poo. I knit much slower when I try to pick. maybe with practice.

  • @knitpicks

yeah... i guess so.. i'm trying to learn the continental but i just can't get it right..

  • @knitpicks I think it's mean to show off talents and not share how to do it

  • @UnseenAndInvisible There is a video of someone knitting pretty fast using the throw method. Look up Speed Knitting. It is a 21 second video by KendraBird.

  • @UnseenAndInvisible They are always hating on us throwers :(

  • @UnseenAndInvisible watch pink knits for throwers like us - she has a good style called flicking!

  • I'm impressed! Yes, knitting is good for relaxation. My guess is that when she's home and not competing or demonstrating her speed, she slows down just a bit. Of course, even then, there's not much chance of my ever holding a candle to her speed!

  • I am with ElizabethGS knitting is Zen to me. It is about creation and meditation - not production. About the only time I hurry is if the timer goes off in the oven and I want to finish what I am doing. Oh, that and the smoke detector, I will hurry for that too ;)

  • All i have to say is that is amazing! wonder if she has troubles with her hands, like carpel tunnel?

  • well done!!

  • obviously if shes winning stuff for her speed knitting then shes doing just fine, im sure she enjoys herself when shes not doing demonstrations and is knitting something more fancy.

  • Whoa! I want to tell her to relax. That's really neat though.

  • If you want to churn out gifts and do basic knit/purl I can imagine speed is great, but can she knit at that speed doing complicated cable knits or other more difficult patterns? To me knitting is a zen experience, even when making something more ornate - I love seeing the pattern emerge (and it usually takes only one or two reps before I've memorized the entire pattern..especially if it's only a few row repeat). I think most of us knit while we watch tv or chat, enjoy our tea, relax, etc. :)

  • I think thats fascinating but she doesn't look like she's enjoying herself. I'm not a speedy knitter, but I can watch t.v. and interact with people around me and talk about knitting while I knit.

  • Holy, crap! Wow!

  • WOW in only a knitter with the loom which is realy fun but if this makes it look like its hard just try loom and if you dont like then try to knit like this it would be fun

    ;

  • wow..

  • All I can say is, 'WOW'

  • I loved the video - and the Top Miriam is wearing, is it possible to have details of it please. Camelia UK.

  • its like she fast-forwards through all her knitting

  • i have to make a total of 5 scarves for xmas, which is in 1 week, one done, 2 of them a bit more than have *about 2/3, 7/10* and 2 more i need to still start.!!

  • wow, i like fail comapered to that

  • seriously thought this was like sped up at first lol. she's a beast

  • Awesome vid, but I screw up even at a slow pace, so I think I'll stick to normal speed :P

  • i bet she knitted that shirt shes wearing... haha

  • She must have begun knitting gloves at age three or something crazy like that.

  • She holds the yarn with her left hand so she can just pull it through with each stitch which saves more time than having to take unnecessary movements to cast each stitch. She's very good at it too, I've seen her knit a couple time in person.

Also It's very hard to speed knit with thinner yarn and needles due to the smaller stitches.

  • WOW! that's super fast! how does she hold the yarn? you can barely see it!

  • This is nice and all but I figure the point of knitting was to relaxing, taking your time. Myself? Not going to speed knit like anytime soon but I do enjoy going slow anyway. :p

  • wow.....

  • yeah I'll never be a speed knitter

  • how about some lessons on speed purling continental. I do this same knit method, but cannot figure out how to purl the same

    pegschr@yahoo.com

  • yeah! continental style knitting...i want to see someone get this fast knitting English

  • Awesome vid. If you are a newbie knitter like me there is some great content at at ebeginnersknitting (.) com

  • can you speed purl as well? I mean is it possible?

  • Wow, she's fast!

  • THAT IS COOL, U R AMAZING, I WOULD GET ALL WRAPPED UP IN MY STITCHES FROM HEAD TO TOES

  • For me, knitting is about relaxing, decompressing, and experiencing creation. But, if speed is an added ingredient for some, then I say, "Go for it!"

  • Holy bejesus! I already thought I was a slow knitter, but she makes me look crippled.

  • wow! I cant even follow with my own eyes!

  • amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • yaa.... i cant do that....

  • wowwwwwww bravo !!

  • woah. She takes a week for an afghan, i take 3 years

  • I learned to knit using the English method, but later on switched to Continental. I really think if I hadn't learned Continental I wouldn't still be knitting.

    Thank you, EZ.

  • Please!! Slower motion!! She is too fast!!!!!!!!!

  • At first I thought this was one of those videos where they try to trick you by just showing a sped up video, but I realized that she is actually knitting like that when I saw her mess up a couple of times.

  • WHAT ABOUT ENGLISH STYLE KNITTING???any for that????i knit 5 stitches per minute :(

  • Holy cow. That's incredible!!

  • amazing!!!

  • how is she holding it? i tried it and it just gets all loose. good for her!

  • I knit like at 0:47 LOL

  • woah baby. i could never do that.

  • I think I can knit at a steady speed, but I am much slower when alternating stitches and ribbing... it takes ages.

  • @peacelovebrighteyes

are you knitting continental style? if not, I would strongly recommend it. I just switched after years of "throwing" my yarn, and it is so so so much faster - and switching between knit and purl is no real change in movement at all once you get the hang of it. Give it a try! :)

  • .I don't really want to compete, I just want to be able to finish my projects/gifts faster...

  • really fast

  • this is amazing!!

  • Oh my goodness! I need to learn continental.. xD

  • uh...that's like impossible!

  • She is unbelievable!! I never have caught on to Continental knitting. It is soooo awkward to me. I guess because I learned the other way. I've tried it but always go back to how I learned. This lady is just the fastest though. Whew!!

  • Good grief! I've never seen ANYONE knit that fast. I want to knit fast, but I don't know if I want to knit THAT fast. Then again, maybe I would actually get my projects done in the same year! LOL :D

  • hahaha!

  • woweeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i feel inferior when i watch her knit. when shes 80 she could be making 8 sweaters an hour for her grand kids.

  • I received my Options and Harmony Interchangeable needles and I love them they fit right in your hand and very comfortable to work with and no complications...Thanks a lot

  • wow i'm strill trying to make my first scarf.

  • weird. o_O

  • Wow, I just realized I'm a turtle!

  • i can crochet at half that speed:]

  • @pookiesma but were not talking about crocheting honey...

  • Compare her to me and I'm the slowest knitter in the world! But I do knit faster than all of my friends. Okay, so she might be fast but can she knit without looking, eh?

  • @tr1shapumk1n oh yes she can lol if you look at some more videos with her she does interviews while knitting =]

  • wow, amazing ...very fast

  • i knit like zero per minute compared to her. :/

  • @TabyBaby07

she was doing it on purpose so that we could get it. think with your head, kiddo :(

  • @TabyBaby07 dido

  • @TabyBaby07 lol me too!!!

  • really wow. and someone said my knitting to be fast (compare to it i'm slow like a turtle i think (well gotta practice - 'cause practice makes perfect - anyway i haven't been knitting much just in the class simple things and lately some for myself (trying to finish that cardigan which is to my knees)

  • wow i thought my aunt knitted fast... this is freakin crazy!!! that means i knit like a turtle walking...

  • wow and i thought grandma was fast... this is insane! lol

  • OK I'd like to increase my knitting speed. I can follow most of this but I cannot get the yarn to feed with my thumb. I have to stop every few stitches and move a bunch of stitches up the needle. Is there some secret on what the rest of the left hand is doing??

  • Let's not forget that "metal needles tend to produce faster knitting but stitches are more likely to slide off by accident." from wikipedia -knitting needles.

  • Ok. Someone tell me that is not really real!! :D

  • amazing. I'm a turtle-knitter, then.

  • : O Amazing!

  • THATS GOTTA BE FAKE. SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME IT IS FAKE. its not fake, is it. 0_0

  • nope, not fake...after learning continental for knitting and purling, my knitting has become exponentially faster.

  • I wish it was fake. I feel like a snail knitter! *Stares at the three inches deep of a hat that she knitted... in almost 10 hours....

Is she knitting right-handed, then left-handed, so that she doesn't have to switch the needles around? That's genius...

  • wow...very fast , Does she enjoy knitting ?

  • No she's only that fast because she hates it...of course she enjoys it!!

  • I knit alright. Not that fast, but fast enough for me.

  • O_O They put it to SUPAH SLOW MO!!

She could probably make a scarf in like...an hour :D

  • I want to see her knitting a lace pattern, Fair Isle or an Aran sweater. All that garter must be boring. Even when it's knitted very fast.

  • I don't know if the experience could be as relaxing and contemplative when going at this speed! Of course, she probably goes into a zone and stays there. Phone's ringing, supper's boiling over, and.... Mom is knitting.

  • lool

  • I bet she gets christmas presents done in like... a day.

  • @Rhodeislandisboring lol ya, i know what all her relatives get for brithdays and christmas!

  • I knew I was a slow knitter, but jeez-louis. I'm a tight knitter, so I go super slow. When I first started I was a really tight knitter. I throw with my right hand, so my left index finger was always bruised from pushing the needle point. Much better now. I'd love to learn that technique though.

  • Amazing!!! I'd love to be able to knit so fast - although I use knitting as a way to relax... I don't think I'd be very relaxed trying to go so fast! I'd still love to be a bit faster though ;-)

  • woah i want to knit that fast.. i could finally finish all the projects in my closet lol

  • simply amazing! I think of knitting as a relaxing hobby but there's nothing relaxing about this! Just breathtaking!

  • Oh boy, would I love to knit faster; maybe not as fast as this lady does. Watching her knit reminds me of a machine. This is totally amazing to me. There's no wasted motion at all, which is why she's able to conserve her energy JUST for knitting.

I believe that my shoulders would be up around my ears if I decided to attempt this. On the other hand I think that I will, just to see.

  • omg:L

  • Omg when I first saw her fingers move my eyes started flashing T___T

    Pro, much!!!

I bet she makes so many people feel like slow knitters... (namely myself)

  • she makes me feel like a slow knitter

  • She makes *everyone* feel like a slow knitter (except her fellow speed knitters, of course).

  • That's pretty cool/ Do u think it would work if a knitter knits english style

  • what an amazing talent. I thought i would try to find how to hold onto yarn while knitting. Now i wonder if i can do this also.

What have i got to lose? probably a lot of stitches:-)

  • yeah

  • lol, keep that crochet hook handy! :p

  • OH MY FRICKING GAWD..lmao

  • 500 IN ONE MINUTE?!?!?!?! i feel so slow now

    :(

  • oops, its 118. BUT STILL A LOT

  • She probably knit that sweater in a half hour!

  • OMG! this is just amazing! make me look like the slowest knitter in the world! hahaah...

im trying crocheting...and i think its sooo much faster! but thats just me thinking out loud. ^_^

  • This vid makes me feel so slooooow. And I thought I was fast. Apparently not.

  • well, first of all I cannot Continental knit. So when I "speed knit" the voice over would be saying "watch how she drops stitches as she is knitting so very slow, but trying to knit what she thinks is fast." Then we would all have to lol at my lack of skill. Yet, I knit.

  • wtf!!!!!! Im like.. in slow motion compared to this lady.. jezz!! she could knit a scarf in 10 mins!!!!

  • OMG she's like a machine!

  • that's really really really fast!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • wow it took me 2 years to figure out how to knit because i was only doin one thing wrong!

  • TWO HUNDRED IN THREE MINUTES!?

  • she was quick with that knitting. Wow I hope some day I am that good with knitting. I can crochet pretty quick but not knitting. lol

  • Thats how i knit but whoa....not that fast. I only do about 70 sts a min, and thats when i'm on a layover, when I'm at home its only about 50 to 60 sts a min. but did you notice the camera couldnt even catch her hands, they would have to film that on slow mo and it would still look fast.

  • I still can't knit that fast after watching this... fail.

  • hmm could you do it that fast with acrylic yarn? It's not very stretchy and it's slowing me down..

  • Are you sure it's the lack of stretch and not the "tooth"? I can feel acrylic yarn grabbing at my fingers, and it grabs at the needles too. I noticed it more with bamboo needles, but it's very grabby, and doesn't glide well.

The fastest yarns I've found are natural fibers, the softer the faster. Are you LYS loyal? Look for Misti Alpaca, it's the same price as acrylic.

Knit Picks has some yummy looking baby alpaca/silk that should be as soft and smooth but stronger.

  • i don't think i could ever do that!!!

  • woah!!!!!!

  • wow that is fast
