I dont think majority of the humans care at all. Take a look at the Condor which is the largest flying bird but was almost put out by human activity or even the Tazmanian Tiger ( I think thats what the name was) which became extinct.
It doesn't surprise me this lovely animal is extint. I lived in China and traveled there as well. Where I lived I could honestly count the sunny days in one hand. it's sad to see a country with such a rich history through everything away just to catch up to the West.
just wait its just a beginning...almost every single species will soon be extinct because of human humanity...only a few will survives...just check the list of the endagered species, I feel like take a gun and go kill every hunter on the planet.
that sighting has not been confirmed yet..and even if they found one, what difference would it make? one or two won't do any good to save a species...this is why they are considered "functionally extinct" because though a few may be alive, their chances of being able to thrive and function in our world are down to almost zero..
Oh dear, what am I dealing with? Bad grammar and more lack of logic. Where is the proof that the people saddened by this extinction are hypocrites? Where is the proof that they are not outraged by the deaths of innocent Iraqi people? And, for the record, all humans are animals, but not all animals are tools of the Chinese government.
An illogical posting. Asking why people "don't [care] about human lives," assumes that the posters have no such conern. Can you prove this supposition? Are you saying that people ought not to express concern over other species? You sound like you might be an official of the Chinese government. Are you?
The unique Baiji dolphin is the only species in its genes. Its lost is tragic. It was really really close to being saved. The best time was 20 years ago. China just opened up at that time. The nation was very poor. International organizations did not help either. They probably did not know.
If this window of opportunity happens 20 years later, these would have survived. Sigh 20 years is like a blink in natural history.
Now another critically endangered species is the elephant -- Chinese paddlefish. Please help the Chinese government to save this mighty looking fish from extinction. The last spotting of the fish was in 2003.
All because of humans.. -.-

good thing they are daming the river in response to this...

Daming the riving in the first place caused a drop in the small fish which were the Baijis food source. Thus part of the problem.

I plead to the world whale and/or wild life organizations to supply some funding to save the last Baiji.
Despite the cute looks, the rapid declining of baiji is not noticed by the world. There is little or no money spent to save them.
I hear HSBC China donated some money. Gee, I don't think the bank alone can save the creature.

I am sooo happy that the dolphin has been spotted. Now only if we can learn how to bring them back from the brink of extention.

It doesn't look good. Even if there are one or two alive, they're considered functionally extinct. They're too old to have young. This is so sad. :[

i now, but this hope is ok. I can't believe they are gone. That was 7 months ago.

Hunters are only one cause of many.Habitat loss would be the major threat.
