that look from 0:16-0:20 is not 'be ready,' it's 'you better f****** hit this shot, white boy,' and naturally Steve Kerr answered. One of the best 5 role players of ALL time.
i thought this when i watched & still do...if you're Utah, how do you send Stockton to double team and leave one of the best shooters EVER to play in the NBA....double off rodman, or one of the big guys, but it can't be from Kerr
jordan was great because he made his teammate to be better. a true leader. he sacrifice to become heroic but instead trusting his teammate to deliver for the team.
I'm sorry MJ fans...I'm one of you, but respect Kobe too much as well...Kobe has had many similar moments in his career, and 2 in the last 2 NBA Finals...the assist to Fish in game 4 in OT (off the double team) in 2009, and the assist to Ron-Ron with a minute to go in game 7 in 2010...please don't make it seem as if MJ always made the right decisions (he didn't), as opposed to Kobe who always makes the irrational decisions (he doesn't).
@ronin29marcpano haha when LA wins rings, "it's A TEAM SPORT, Kobe's merely 1 player, he got plenty of help", but when LA loses "Kobe gets 100% of the blame."
Also, you didn't even address what I said, so STFU.
@sera7ares i gotta disagree caz i've been saying gasol is the mvp of the team and the team goes where he gooes for the past 3 years. this year he wasn't the same pau i'm used to seeing, thus they lost... BTW im probably the biggest kobe hater on this page and im from LA ;)
@MrGOOZ3 being the X-Factor does not mean you are the MVP...was Jason Terry the Mavs MVP because they were bad when he was bad, and they were good when he was good?? hell no, Nowitzki was the MVP...gasol was the missing piece tho, I'll give you that...
@westshotgun Would it make a difference if you can't get a STOP? What if you keep making "clutch" shots, but you can't get any stops? Not everything shows up on the box score. I'm sure hustle, effort and 50/50 balls don't show up on the stat sheet. If it was always based on the stat sheet, then by all means, call Rose and LeBron the most clutch players in the league.
@123teletubbies456 actually i am not sure about rose but i think lebron is one of the most clutch player in the league right now. He can make clutch shot, clutch defense, clutch assist etc. And i brought up clutch% to quiet all the kobe fans who think kobe is more clutch than MJ. Some kobe fans actually think kobe would've made crazy shot (unlike MJ) in that situation. Can you believe ppl actually saying that? I know kobe has clutch but you should not even compare kobe with MJ about clutch.
@westshotgun How is LeBron the most clutch player in the league right now? Did you miss the NBA Finals this year? LeBron SHRUNK under pressure. Bosh (somewhat) and Wade had to cover for his butt going incognito in the fourth quarter of every game. If you want to talk about the most clutch in the league right now by success this year, it has to be Dirk. He's the champion after all, and he changed his label from the "choker" to the main guy to lead the Mavs to a 'ship.
@123teletubbies456 read my comment again. I said lebron is 'one of the most clutch player', NOT the most clutch player. And yes he has been struggling as heat but back in clevland he has shown his true clutch and i think he will figure out the problem. Dont get me wrong. I am lebron hater but you gotta admit his ability. And for me I am always taking MJ over kobe in clutch if i have to pick. I think alot of ppl including phil jackson will choose like me.
@westshotgun He's still not clutch in my eyes. For someone who's arrogant enough to have a tattoo on their back saying, "The Chosen One" he doesn't showcase much to back up his arrogance. He's good, but not great. Eh, it's based on opinion. I'd personally just rank Jordan and Kobe as 1(a.) Jordan 1(b.) Kobe
@westshotgun And yeah, Kobe HAS been clutch and I'd take Kobe/Jordan over any player IN the clutch. Although, this year Kobe's been on and off and the media always finds some way to downgrade his play. When you're up, they always find a way to knock you down.
@123teletubbies456 And he's NOT been clutch more than he's been clutch. He's shot a lousy % on last shot/game winning baskets. Jordan shot a much higher % during a time of strictly man to man and when hand checking (not to mention hacking and more) were allowed, unlike the NBA since 2001.
@sera7ares How is playing D not clutch? Imagine if the game was tied and the opponent had the last possession and was thinking of winning it with the last shot. Let's say the clock is winding down with 10 seconds left and it all comes down to how good your go-to guy is and how good a defender is on him. The defender manages to catch the guy unprepared and steals it from him. He can (a) force it into overtime, or (b) try to get the game winning shot. Now if the defender wasn't playing good D
@sera7ares Then the offensive player has a chance to win the game. Defense CAN be considered a clutch "play". /watch?v=VNpJXDPnQTE&feature=related That was probably THE BEST clutch moment I have seen. The Pistons had a chance to win the game with only 5 seconds left with them having possession. What happens? Bird commits the steal and passes it to DJ who lays it in and wins the game for them. I think that's clutch enough for me. Just my $0.02
@123teletubbies456 When u have the ball with 20 secs to go, all eyes r on u...u win it and ur the hero, or u lose it and ur the goat...when you're on D, there's no such risk/reward thing going on, cause unless you do something EXTREMELY EXTREMELY stupid, nobody's gonna blame you for the guy scoring on you...same as unless you make an EXTREMELY EXTREMELY great play (Prince block on Reggie, Bird's steal, etc.) youre not the hero, just good d...w/o pressure on u, idk how u can call it clutch.
@sera7ares Yeah that's what I'm trying to say. You can either rise up to the challenge and keep the pressure from affecting your gameplay negatively or use that pressure as an opportunity to rise. It's when you perform great at all levels of your game in the final deciding minutes in a game. If you can't handle the pressure and wilt in the heat of the moment and commit something very stupid, then you can't be called clutch. Clutch for me is exceptional performance in the final moments of a game.
@123teletubbies456 can you recall ANYBODY being the goat by making a poor defensive play??? I sure don't...even if you can come up with some examples, the ratio in the other direction is overwhelming...when you're on D, the chance to be the hero is there (although it's small), but the chance to be the goat is almost non-existent...hence, no pressure...
on offense, we always either celebrate or diss the guy that made/miss the shot...that's the difference...in the pressure of the situation.
@sera7ares I'm not saying you're called the GOAT if you make a good play. It's not about being the GOAT at this point. It's game 7, you're up one and the opponent has the last shot. Would you rather make a great, underrated defensive play IN the CLUTCH, or think about being the GOAT? To put it more clearly, do you want to be that guy that contributed with the championship or the GOAT who lost the championship? Defense is underrated, but that doesn't resort to it being non-clutch as offense.
@123teletubbies456 AHA! NOW I see where you don't understand me...when I said goat, I didn't mean Greatest Of All Time, I said goat as the animal a.k.a the one that's gonna be "sacrificed" in case something went wrong, in other words the one that's gonna take the blame...have you never heard of "HERO or GOAT"? Means either you're gonna be celebrated (hero), or skinned alive (goat). I didn't mean greatest of all time by goat. Now read my previous comment with that in mind, it will make sense now.
@sera7ares Lol, now it makes more sense. Still though, you might not be the goat because if you play the best defense, but the offense just pulls it through, better offense trumps good defense. I'm just saying that defense is underrated in today's league. I can understand it being underrated because people would rather see flashy assists or massive dunks to entertain the crowd. Defense is an integral part of basketball and it should be recognized more.
hahaha there are still ppl who could think kobe can make the crazy shot out of double team? Go look it up the % clutch for kobe. Also MJ could take the crazy shot since he is the most clutch player in history.
@westshotgun Wtf? Are you one of those stat/boxscore geeks who barely pay attention to the games and just judge a game by the boxscore? So that means if LeBron, Durant and Rose had higher % clutch means they're more clutch than Jordan or Kobe? Being clutch is performing well under pressure whether it be on the offensive-side,defensive-side or making those hustle plays or just having your presence known on the court. People think making shots is the only "clutch" play, but
no Kerr didnt request the ball, micheal knew from earlier when the bulls lost that Stockton would come off of Kerr to double him so he said you gotta take the shot cause he was wide open
I remember watching that game on TV. Man....greatest team to ever play in the NBA. the NBA is so boring now, theres no competition like there was back then.
@sfield86 When I was growing up in the early 90's competition was all I saw in the NBA, and was it ever a glorious time. Sadly those days are long gone. The league is being tarnished with favoritism and corruption. David Stern sure as hell didn't want a small market team like the KINGS to win in 2002.
And let's not mention the teams the bulls denied in their run: Patrick Ewing's Knicks, Reggie Miller's Pacers, Penny's Magic (Swept), Finally got over the hump and dethroned the bad boys in 91 with a sweep. Sure Olajuwon would have presented his challenges as the bulls never had a great center, but drexler was already tormented from the ass whipping he got in 92 and chuck would have been taken out of his game by Rodman's antics no doubt. And let's not forget mike. Hands down greatest ever. 6-0.
Please stop the houston rockets chatter. In fact everyone knows Houston deserves an asterisk next to there titles, indicating "HIS AIRNESS" absence. Jordan beat Magic, (albeit near retirement ), Drexler, (who people were saying was actually better than Jordan!) Charles Barkley, The dynamic duo of Gary Payton and Shawn Kemp, and of course arguably the greatest point guard- forward tandem of all time Stockton-Malone. Mike defeated Hall of Famers in their prime with the exception of Magic.
@ReymundoValdez magic only retired becuz he contracted HIV. Otherwise he was still in his prime, and that's jus a serious shame.
Hakeem is great enuf to mite hav proly* won one vs jordan, even jordan has stated that he thinks he was the best center of all time. U mite can say Jordan was smart enuf to realize in 93 that he mite not hav had the will in him any longer to be able to accomplish another ring. Its more than jus talent, Jordan is proof enuf of that, ironically.
He wasn't in his prime. He retired at 32...his prime was '87-'90. And not surprisingly, that's when he won his three reg season MVP's and another Finals MVP. The Lakers getting to the Finals in '91 was surprising (as a Laker fan) and one of the tributes of Magic. Hell, the Finals were much closer than 4-1. Game 3 was right there for LA and Game 5, Paxson just kept knocking down the shots. But the writing was on the wall after the loss to Phoenix in '90 when Riley bailed.
@reddwarfposse If Kerr missed that shot, Jordan would have probably gone under fire just because he didn't take the shot himself. It was basically a lose-lose situation for him if they lost that game. Kinda of like how LeBron is always under fire when he makes the right play to pass to a wide-open 3 point shooter who misses the game winner.
What I'm trying to say is ESPN is the bane of sports and needs to go away. Actually, every sports opinion writer need to go away.
@reddwarfposse Although MJ made the right play in this particular situation, Steve Kerr just admitted in the video that Jordan had done the same mistake trying to make a crazy play out of the double team, and as a result, the bulls lost the game. I don't know what you're talking about kid.
@reddwarfposse You are exactly right. That's a HUGE difference between the two. Kobe will get his assists during the game, but he HAS to take the last shot. That's not in itself greatness. knowing what play will give you the greatest chance to be successful and win is greatness. Jordan knew what Utah would do, and made the adjustment to be successful. That's why he had just a high % of success in those situations, but Kobe has a much lower %. Kobe = low % and a bunch of TO's in these plays.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
It could have been a different story if the HOUSTON ROCKETS were the ones who went up against the CHICAGO BULLS in the 1997 NBA FINALS. The Rockets' BIG 3: Hakeem Olajuwon, Charles Barkley and Clyde Drexler against the Bulls BIG 3: Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen and Dennis Rodman. Both teams were NBA Champions in the 1990s. If only the Rockets were not accidentally beaten by John Stockton and the Utah Jazz, the Rockets would have won the 1997 NBA Championship.
@pupungcute But they were beaten, the Jazz were clearly better than the Rockets, but that's my opinion. I don't think the Rockets have that quickness needed to beat the Bulls.
@Karatakus182 Yes, the 80s and 90s were the golden years of the NBA. It's not that modern players aren't any good, it's just that they're that much more narcissistic with few other redeeming personal qualities. Those other decades had personalities: Bird, Magic, Jordan, Barkley, Laimbeer, Rodman who love 'em or hate 'em made the game and post-season drama much more interesting. it just seems so much more sterile now.
@tucsonia Yeah you're right. To all these players that you've mentioned I would add Olajuwon, Drexler, Malone,Stockton, Kemp,Payton,Ewing,Mutombo. All these guys were the heroes of my childhood;)
@tucsonia this is the reason why Jordan is always better than Kobe: at the last second Jordan will let someone else have the game winning shot instead of force a bad shot. If you give the ball to Kobe, don't expect to see it back.
i used to live on the south side of chicago and im not even kidding when kerr hit that shot people just went crazy, you heard people on the streets, people in their houses, it was a great time to be a chicagoan.
@Legend1One Nah, Jordan only came under it when he dished off to Kerr. And I can see where yer coming from, but they used to tolerate it more back then, but in recent years they have cracked down on the palming thing more.
Austin3sixteen seriously if I, could dunk, then anybody can, I'm just 5ft 7inches for godsake! Simply just be dedicated to a working jump course like the one I am using (50 inch vertical [dot] com), it will maximize your leaping ability and your speed.
Steve Kerr - NBA Finals 1997, Game 6's Final Shot ahczktbzbyxmsxdsbt kaikw #Austin3sixteen
Austin3sixteen, is 5 9, white and could dunk. what do you mean white guys can't dunk? It's all about the training folks do to get their particular jump to be strong enough to dunk. But for me, I just used the professional dunk workout over at | 50 inch vertical [dot] com |
Austin3sixteen, at times I attempt to keep in mind exactly what it was like well before I was able to dunk the ball. Immediately after I applied the workout program at 50 inch vertical (dot) com - my skills has been increasing quickly - I'm no longer on the bench!
@milkandmeat No kobe does not have players like jordan did. Jordan had the all time assists leader and a two or three time defensive player of the year on his team and a 3pt shooter that has legendary shooting percentage
@milkandmeat Well, to answer your question, Steve Kerr is a better spot shooter than anybody Kobe has ever played with. Steve Kerr, John Paxton, BJ Armstrong, and Craig Hodges were all top league shooters, how all one atleast 1 three point shooting contest at NBA All-Star weekend. I think that's what he means.
@milkandmeat kobe passing? what's that lol. no he wouldn't have and he woulda missed it too cuz he's only really had one clutch moment in the playoffs. they go 3-1 against the suns and still lose. best closer and real clutch right? lol MJ = GOAT :D

I remember watching that game on TV. Man....greatest team to ever play in the NBA. the NBA is so boring now, theres no competition like there was back then.
sfield86 11 months ago
@sfield86 When I was growing up in the early 90's competition was all I saw in the NBA, and was it ever a glorious time. Sadly those days are long gone. The league is being tarnished with favoritism and corruption. David Stern sure as hell didn't want a small market team like the KINGS to win in 2002.

PEPEelZAPATISTA 1 year ago
And let's not mention the teams the bulls denied in their run: Patrick Ewing's Knicks, Reggie Miller's Pacers, Penny's Magic (Swept), Finally got over the hump and dethroned the bad boys in 91 with a sweep. Sure Olajuwon would have presented his challenges as the bulls never had a great center, but drexler was already tormented from the ass whipping he got in 92 and chuck would have been taken out of his game by Rodman's antics no doubt. And let's not forget mike. Hands down greatest ever. 6-0.
ReymundoValdez 1 year ago
Please stop the houston rockets chatter. In fact everyone knows Houston deserves an asterisk next to there titles, indicating "HIS AIRNESS" absence. Jordan beat Magic, (albeit near retirement ), Drexler, (who people were saying was actually better than Jordan!) Charles Barkley, The dynamic duo of Gary Payton and Shawn Kemp, and of course arguably the greatest point guard- forward tandem of all time Stockton-Malone. Mike defeated Hall of Famers in their prime with the exception of Magic.
ReymundoValdez 1 year ago 2
@ReymundoValdez magic only retired becuz he contracted HIV. Otherwise he was still in his prime, and that's jus a serious shame.
Hakeem is great enuf to mite hav proly* won one vs jordan, even jordan has stated that he thinks he was the best center of all time. U mite can say Jordan was smart enuf to realize in 93 that he mite not hav had the will in him any longer to be able to accomplish another ring. Its more than jus talent, Jordan is proof enuf of that, ironically.
thettruest 1 year ago
@thettruest
But the writing was on the wall after the loss to Phoenix in '90 when Riley bailed.
cbaldwinjr 9 months ago
@cbaldwinjr Jordan won his last ring at 35 in 98. Steve Kerr was a great role player.

SgtScruffy209 6 months ago
@reddwarfposse You are exactly right. That's a HUGE difference between the two. Kobe will get his assists during the game, but he HAS to take the last shot. That's not in itself greatness. knowing what play will give you the greatest chance to be successful and win is greatness. Jordan knew what Utah would do, and made the adjustment to be successful. That's why he had just a high % of success in those situations, but Kobe has a much lower %. Kobe = low % and a bunch of TO's in these plays.

-ENGEL from the Philippines

@pupungcute But they were beaten, the Jazz were clearly better than the Rockets, but that's my opinion. I don't think the Rockets have that quickness needed to beat the Bulls.

ULAZYCOOK 1 year ago
@Karatakus182 Yes, the 80s and 90s were the golden years of the NBA. It's not that modern players aren't any good, it's just that they're that much more narcissistic with few other redeeming personal qualities. Those other decades had personalities: Bird, Magic, Jordan, Barkley, Laimbeer, Rodman who love 'em or hate 'em made the game and post-season drama much more interesting. it just seems so much more sterile now.

@tucsonia this is the reason why Jordan is always better than Kobe: at the last second Jordan will let someone else have the game winning shot instead of force a bad shot. If you give the ball to Kobe, don't expect to see it back.

Austin3sixteen, is 5 9, white and could dunk. what do you mean white guys can't dunk? It's all about the training folks do to get their particular jump to be strong enough to dunk. But for me, I just used the professional dunk workout over at | 50 inch vertical [dot] com |

milkandmeat 1 year ago
@milkandmeat thats exactly what i am talking about.
Donjuanantoine 1 year ago
@milkandmeat No kobe does not have players like jordan did. Jordan had the all time assists leader and a two or three time defensive player of the year on his team and a 3pt shooter that has legendary shooting percentage
KeenoMajeeno1 1 year ago
@KeenoMajeeno1 what does that have to do with steve kerr?
milkandmeat 1 year ago
@milkandmeat Well, to answer your question, Steve Kerr is a better spot shooter than anybody Kobe has ever played with. Steve Kerr, John Paxton, BJ Armstrong, and Craig Hodges were all top league shooters, how all one atleast 1 three point shooting contest at NBA All-Star weekend. I think that's what he means.
Legend1One 1 year ago
@milkandmeat kobe passing? what's that lol. no he wouldn't have and he woulda missed it too cuz he's only really had one clutch moment in the playoffs. they go 3-1 against the suns and still lose. best closer and real clutch right? lol MJ = GOAT :D
