Ian had trouble with the vocals the entire tour and this is no exception. As a result, this song never realized its live potential. There were a few nights when Ian was spot on, but it's a handful at best.
@JasonHi Yes, Ian recently said that he once again had vocal nodes, like back in the Sabbath days, in 1987-88. Ian definatly did his best, and there were some nights that were better than others of course. This song in general, was at Gillan's vocal limit, so it's strange that it was played EVERY night in 1987. In 1988 it was gone from the set, it took it's toll on his voice. It was also the third song in the set, so it made Gillan strugge a bit throughout the rest of the gigs unfortunatly.
This was an awesome Concert, Deep Purple finished the night off with the most awesome laser light show, it was in the soccer arena, a bowl, with dirt sides and telephone poles all around that the laser show was reflected off of. It was by far the best concert I've ever been to.
This is just great, Ian Paice at his best probably. I have been following them since i was 11 years old in 1977. my last consert with them was i Langesund Norway 08.07.10. Still alive and kickin, great sound and you can see that they love playing both the new and the old stuff, it`s great to see after all theese years that they don`t get tired of playing live, beacuse that is when they are at their best, like it has been always:))
Must have been a big open air festival (called Monsters of Rock in some sources, but they didn't play at the Mother-festival in England did they?!?!) quite to the end of the 87 tour. I think you can hear that too, because there is no echoing from the walls of the venue etc
Yes, Purple toured with this Monsters Of Rock type of tour, I'm not sure if the Pforzheim gig is from one of those though.
Anyone that knows where the last show in 1987 was played, where Ritchie broke one of his fingers, when throwing his guitar into the air? The rest of the 'HOBL' tour was cancelled, that is all I know. I have the Verona show from 1987, which is the last recording that has surfaced from the 'HOBL' tour, but the band played a full concert there, so....
when I wrote things like this beeing a Monsters of Rock show etc, I got most information from a really great DP TourDates Archive website (from Germany, but in english)
don't know what youtube does if I try to post links, so I add _s to it:
w_w_w_(dot)_purple_(dot)_de/dirk/purple/
and there to "Tourdates". Afaik all known DP shows, from MK1 to today! cancelled shows, where tourdates were confirmed at first, etc is all in there, as far as it's known.
so btw, this was in August, the incident which caused the tour to be cancelled should have happened in May (30.05.87-Phoenix,USA), they did a few more dates in August/september, seems like Ritchies hand healed^^ The first concert after the break was in Helsinki(19.08.87), there's a (nearly) full length audience-film from this show(bad quality, but they seem to have fun on stage). and the Verona show seems to be the last one in 1987.
@Silber7 Yes, I also found out. They had a break for some time before the tour continued. I once read an interview with Jon, where he said that: "Ritchie broke his finger when throwing his guitar into the air, when I woke up the next morning at the hotel, I was given a planeticket, and was phoned and told the tour was over." I thought he was referring to the Verona show, but I have the entire concert of that show in .mp3 format, and they do the whole gig, so I found it odd.
@Silber7 It was a Monsters of Rock (open air) concert. I remember Halloween, Metallica and Dio performing before Deep Purple. By the time Deep Purple started, most people in the audience seemed a bit stoned, so it was amazingly easy to get to the front. Deep Purple's performance was amazing despite Ian Gillans slight vocal tiredness.
Thank you! :) I rushed some MK.II reunion pics together with an excellent performance of a great song. I trued to sort of synch some of the pics with the song, but it took too much time really.
@luk197900 Wrong answer! Bye bye! ;)
