I think that after all these years it's been widely recognized why the mediocre, low UK's song stole that 1997 contest : the whole event got fixed and cheated in the voting in order to gift UK of an undeserved, farcical , robbed victory just 'cos Italy who was going to win by miles in a fair competition had not been allowed to win the contest since they managed to leave the ESC and rightly hell all EBU due to the evident and big disagreements with the Eurovision about next ESC contests !!

Italy quit eurovision because it was disqualifed. They said that their song was similar to a song from Roxette.

@alanx2008 Off course this was not the case. This song was not disqualified. They quit because interest in Eurovision was low for years in Italy and RAI didn't want to broadcast the contest live (which became an EBU-demand because of the televoting introduced a year later).

So Italy quit Eurovision after 1997 because in their opinion this song didn't do well enough? But it got 4th place. How can any country be disappointed in 4th place!? Finland is almost always at the bottom of the scores (except 2006) but no one has ever even thought that we should quit participating in Eurovision
