Sorry, but listening to this as an employee of NWA is too funny. Your story is totally classic, you're so not the only one. Sounds like the flight that got delayed and then cancelled was because of something mechanical. It's the only way they'd offline you onto another carrier.
Totally sucks dude. Some of us feel bad on the other end too! It sucks to not be able to get someone home, or to an important event.
