"Can I tell ya one thing? That's three holding penalties on one football team in a quarter and a half. It ain't funny."-- favorite line from Bum Phillips.
Bum was a great coach. He is loved in Houston and New Orleans, the 2 cities where he coached. If the Pittsburgh Steelers didnt exist, he would have been a Super Bowl champ.
When the Oilers and Steelers went against each other in the playoffs, I felt like that WAS the Super Bowl. The two best teams in football except they were in the same conference. I truly believe that if the Oilers had played the champion from the NFC that Houston would have beaten them just like the Steelers did. It was a fun rivalry with Pittsburgh unlike the hatred between the Steelers and the Raiders. Thanks for the great memories Bum!! Go Black & Gold and Luv ya Blue!!!!
I miss the great coaches like Bum Phillips, Leeman Bennett and others. They made football fun and were genuine.I still love the game but coaching and players are more about being overpaid underachievers. Its so different now.
I was a Hairdresser back in the Disco Days working for Visible Changes. Every Sunday we could go to the Astrodome free and sat on the 50-yard line, witnessing Bum Phillips and Earl Campbell. If you wonder, why we could go every Sunday to the Dome was because there was a thing that was Law here in TX called "Blue Law" – Houston Loves and will always respect Bum Phillips!
Bum Phillips wasn't much of a coach. he had Earl Campbell think about it.
He didn't build an offense around him either, which is the reason Campbell's body is so fucked up today. Their QB sucked, their passing game was shit. Earl Campbell got the ball every down. Run, run, run, run, run, run. That's one reason his stats were so high in his short career.
@FrozenTundraofHell Campbell's body is in bad shape because of a hereditary degenerative back disorder. Football made it progress a bit quicker, but Campbell would have been in the same shape by 60 either way. Also, Pastorini is and has been one of the more underrated quarterbacks of the era. And, Bum was a helluva coach...the owner was the weakness...
@FrozenTundraofHell He was an excellent coach. You don't know what you are talking about. The Oilers problem back then was that they could not get past the Steelers.
If my I.Q. were several points lower I could actually enjoy the crap that you wrote.
@HermFontenot I'm a Steeler fan and I don't like him. Personally, I'd like to see NFL Network place him in the studio with Phil Villapiano and George Atkinson just to see which of the two former Raiders would take a swing at him first.
The Houston Oilers were one of my favorite teams . I loved watching Earl Campbell run, Bum Phillips on the sideline and their cool helmet and colors. Good stuff.
RememberTheOilers is the unofficial tribute site to the Houston Oilers. From 1960 to 1996, the oilers brought football to Houston. they won the first two AFL titles and reached the playoffs several times in their 36 years in the AFL and NFL. The Oilers moved to Tennessee in 1997, but they will be remembered forever. LUV YA BLUE!!
Man, those Luv Ya Blue Oilers will be missed! Remember Kanny Burrough? I found a website where he sells #00 merchandise. It's pretty nostalgic. Search 00Wear to find it.
Mark Madden is a radio commentator in Pittsburgh. He thinks the Steelers are the only team that ever did anything in the NFL. Take care and have a good one.
im a New England Patriots fan and my fan base was not allways loyal ether till after 2001. Look at Arizona Cardinals there fans are the biggest fair weather fans i ever seen.
How could they fire a man like Bum Phillips i mean he fit Houston well cowboy hat the way he talked i gotta say that was a good coach for the Oilers. You see after Bum Phillips Houston didnt make the playoffs till they made it 6 times in a row 1987-1993 and choked all of them then played there last 2 seasons in a empty stadium 1995 and 1996 that shows the oilers fans were not that loyal.
Bum Phillips a man who did lead the Houston Oilers to 2 AFC Championships and thats that srry ass bud adams thats been owner of the Oilers/Titans sinse 1960.
absolutely right! i recall there were a couple of questionable calls by the refs in that second championship game against the steelers--the oilers might have won the super bowl that year.
Why the hell is that fat fuck from Pittsburgh on here commenting about Bum, one of the great coaches of all time. Bum forgot more about football than that turd in a polyester shirt ever even suspected.
Both father and son have a laid back attitude, both are country boys, both have huge Southern accents, both were well liked by their players, etc. Now the difference between father and son is that Bum actually won 2 playoff games in 1978 and 1979 while Wade hasn't won anything. People in Houston loved Bum and he could get away with his eccentric style of dressing and Cowboy hat. If Wade did that today he would not only be laughed at by everyone, he would run out town.
@slvrangel4 Man, those Luv Ya Blue Oilers will be missed! Remember Kanny Burrough? I found a website where he sells #00 merchandise. It's pretty nostalgic. Search 00Wear to find it
@slvrangel4 Wow the Texans are going to the playoffs this year and they were so close to it last year. The Titans are infested with gangsters and wannabee bastards but the Texans are on their way.
The Oilers of the late 70's were a lot of fun. I remember when they beat the Cowboys on Thanksgiving Day. Bum said the Cowboys maybe Americas Team but we're Texas' team and that's more important.
Die Mark Madden! Take your Squeelers with you.

When Bum was fired, that tore the heart out of the team and out of the city's football fans.
I will never forget it.
I wish we could have fired the wretched team owner instead.
As a kid, I joined my family in going out for the 1978 homecoming in the Astrodome, after the loss to the Steelers.
The Bum/Earl years will probably always be my favorite in professional football.
Thanks for posting this!
