I don't belong to this sign group but the one I used to be in described themselves as a group that praises God through sign language and interpretative dance and movements. Some real signs are just small and not very theatrical so they're modified to be more expressive. They're not meant to be exact, as they are not for the audience, but for God.
If the criteria is "not for the audience, but for God" ..then anything goes. I doubt very seriously that any Pastor of any religion would go for that. Interpretive dance & movements is one thing, but when you use LANGUAGE, you enter into a whole new realm. The problem with so many "sign teams" is they don't see what they 're doing from a language perspective. Sign is language, not interpretive dance or pretty movements. Do singers "modify" English words "to be more expressive" but misunderstood?
I see where you're coming from as far as language goes, but you had a funny comparison because songs are modified to sound better. We don't speak in poetry or switch words around to make sentences rhyme...If songs were plain English they would simply be boring, as would interpretive dance if exact ASL were used...
Yes, they may be modified, but they still make sense. And they are meant for the users of the language. Sign teams that perform for non-ASL users and misuse the language are completely different. The problem is when the language of the Deaf is being used, but not for the Deaf. This is disrespectful of the culture. If it's not for the Deaf, just make up movements and leave Sign out of it.
Oh, and using ASL is beautiful when used correctly and for the Deaf. Boring? Not hardly!

Most of our songs come from Indiana Bible College, Gateway Bible College, Kurt Carr and Kirk Franklin ... we have songs from other sources, but the majority are from these. Hope this helps you!

@terptater agree on the K thing i've never seen that before... this group is better than most... some i wanna carry to court for miss using my language... if possible.. but some of "Guidedhands" signs are hard to read.. but for the most part i can put 2 and 2 together... most groups on a scale 1-10 (1 worst) most are 1 or 2 mmm this group i give it a 6 to 7 depending on the songs... Your signs are very large and very hard to read. The people who this language belongs to...the DEAF....would have a very hard time reading it.
Your sign for "IN" looks more like BIRTH. On the "K" on the head for KNOW - did you make that up? I've never seen that.

Only about 30 - 35% of the English language is visible on the lips, and many sounds look the same on the lips. (bump, mump, pump)
Add in distance and movement of the group....the few Deaf who can read lips, they will benefit very little to none with lip reading a group.
