From the mid 80s on, sampling became popular amongst musicmakers.Think on Front 242, Depeche Mode,The Art of noise. I have the Korg Dss-1 sampler/synthesizer.He was released in 1985.You had some time later in 1989 the Roland W-30 sampling workstation that was very popular and was used by The Prodigy. The sampler is a strong medium. You can use any kind of sound that exist to make music with.Nice work of Jean-Michel what he did with the voices!
whatever the year - there's still something really cool about seeing a fragment of music you know so well being created after all these years. Class.. :)
this guy have the privilege to play on the first sampler named Fairlight, like Peter Gabriel or Ruichi Sakamoto from YMO, pretty expensive for an home studio ^^
The partial recording of Ethnicolor he plays at the end would have been perfect as a lead up in the final mix. its just slightly different when the uptempo part starts.
Not a chance it's 87. Look at him, look at the studio, he wouldn't be showing off his Fairlight in 87 as no-one cared about them then, in 84/85 they were cutting edge.
@qube123 Guys, i'm french and let me tell you that, when he speaks at 1'50, he clearly says "This was the beginning of the Lyon concert", which means this concert is PAST ;-) This IS '87.
Fair enough then, something radical must have happened then between 87 and 88 to cause such a transformation for the Revolutions album. As all the gear in this video is a little old for 87.
@qube123 Oh wait, i think i get it now. The person who posted this video wrote "Pour la sortie de l'album : "Houston Lyon en concert".", which means "For the Houston Lyon album release". So, this video show them preparing the mixing for this album, nothing else :-) As we know, all JMJ's "live" CDs are all reworked in studio, this was what the video shows! ;-)
@qube123 The ARP 2600 synth and Fairlight sampler he uses in this video were also used on Revolutions (and much later albums as well). He'd only have needed one Roland D-50 to make Revolutions, so I wouldn't expect his studio changed much when he made that album. There's a video of his current studio at Leesmapman's channel and he's still using a lot of the kit that's in this video. If it makes good sounds, it doesn't matter how old the gear is ;)
@triton303 It's in 1987 : the logo of the tv broadcast wasn't looking that way in 1984, and he's speaking about the concert in Lyon that was in... 86 :)

@qube123 It's after 1986. Because he shows a picture of the houston concert (1986). So it can't be 1984. He demonstrates the fairlight with zoolook because he used the fairlight on that album.

The question is not the electronic drums neither the desk for mix. The real question is before it. ¿How does he think the basic melody and sounds?.
chestertonnable 8 months ago
Fair enough, he obviously had a major clear out then before Revolutions, the studio pics from that album show a completely different set up.

True, the samples he is planning on the Fairlight is from Zoolook.
If this was 87, he was probably using a Akai or maybe a Emulator III.
Nevertheless, this is a cool video!

the concert was in october 5th 1986 in Lyon. Houston in april 1986.
The CD and Vinyl "Houston Lyon" was released after in june 1987.
triton303 6 months ago
Looks older than 1987, more like 84 as he's working on Zoolook.
If it was 1987 it would be all Roland D-50's and he'd be working on Revolutions.
Still a cool film.

@qube123 The D-50 was released in 1987, but Revolutions was released in the end of 1988.
This is after the release of the 1987 live album of Rendez-Vous, which name is Houston/Lyon-Cities in Concert.
And if you look the full interview you could here and that they are talking about Houston/Lyon.
