I play them because they are awesome!

And, being from Germany, you can find good bagpipe bands. The bands In Extremo, SuidAkrA, and Grave Digger all use bagpipes, and come from Germany. If I remember correctly, Krid P comes from Germany as well!

As for how they were invented, I have no clue. I assume that they were made by a deity of some sort, that's the only way such an awesome instrument could exist.

But, on a realistic level, they are played because they are awesome, and because they are a part of Scottish history and culture, as the Highland Bagpipes were developed in Scotland.
