  • Clapton thinking at 1:04 : " Good job boy... "

  • such a good qualitiy but the sound is so mute :D

  • Everytime I see John Mayer I think "Young Elvis Presley."

  • John Mayer=Really Amazing.

    Eric Clapton=Double Amazing.

they both can play with soul and technique and passion. I am not saying one player is better than the other, but where did John Mayer get his playing from? CLAPTON! There are a bunch of people bashing Mr. Clapton for his playing but I think we need to remember where Mr. Mayer came from. Clapton can play the crap out of that guitar but he knew it was not the right time for him to take the light. He's giving other musicians the chance tha

  • @SadieMyLady15 Couldn't have said it better. :)

  • Guys, Clapton CREATED this version so stop disrespecting him and saying he got owned. And to clear the gossip, Robert Johnson made the original.

  • James May on the organ.

  • Mayer plays some blistering licks with both precision and grit - when Clapton tries the same he fails - and his muddy sound alone makes me want to clear my troat. The "Clapton Is God" banner should have been lowered some 30 years ago. If You look a little closer at Clapton I think You can see that insight is written all over his face. Mind You - his groundbreaking playing on the Bluesbreakers album is his best ever, so my hat off for that. But this suicide duel with Mayer is almost sad to watch.

  • Wasn't a fan of Mayer's vocals on this. Of course, most of the time I'm not anyways. Regardless, this is a cool collab and both these guys are of course killin' players.

  • Gotta love the head nod at 0:55

  • Is anyone elses audio really quiet?

  • Eric got owned there ..

  • How much pussy would JM have pulled after this.... mind blowing.

  • If only I had Eric Clapton as goddam backing vox...

  • great video, Clapton is always worth a listen.

I like John Mayers style, his pickin' his flow and his feel for the blues... but i dislike his voice : / And i really really want to like it, but its not to my taste... my loss.

  • 2:06 THERE'S JIMI!!!! haha

  • i think you have to know you're THAT good to be that good. it's not about being cocky or a douche, it's just being amazing and having confidence in that.

  • when you can make clapton smirk from your playing theres no doubt your good

  • Robbie McCintosh!!

  • dinamic couple wtf ,amazing

  • No body seems to know him, everyone passes john by. EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW HIM!! >:(

  • its good to see the old masters showing the youngesters how its done lol ....class vid ....

  • @leemeires The BEST Rock musicians are OVER 50 & 60! Aewsome song!

  • my heart is going to jump out while listening them both together!!!!

  • @atl2maryland wow. Just wow. Have ur opinion. But ur wrong. How can u say he sux? Just blows my mind.

  • Love the matching guitars

  • Have the techies even heard of Vocal EQ

  • ...if Elvis and Clapton had a child: John Mayer.

  • Hah! Wonderful performance. It's cool that John got to play with Eric. Heck even John's whole band joined too! It's the same people from his Where the Light is Concert in LA!

  • It's Mayer's set at that show- if you notice it's Eric who leaves the stage at the end, not Mayer..

  • Yeah it's Mayer's band...

  • the voice of clapton its amaizing but i feel that the people expect more of his guitar playing on this

    even myself

  • if claptons god, mayer is jesus

  • @Nicksbia The other way around! Mayer makes clapton look like a schoolboy ;b

  • @Linzyjjj not really plus it's an expression "clapton is god" so u initially didn't get it and second clapton had been playing with hendrix, the beatles, pete townshend, BB king, muddy waters and stevie ray vaughan before john mayer was born. And who has john mayer played with besides clapton and bb? Taylor swift... yea

  • @Nicksbia Your right, but on the other hand; It doesn't say anything about an artist who he has played, or not played with. I think, although John mayer is not as experienced as Clapton, his talent is more obvious than Clapton's-

  • @Linzyjjj also take into consideration clapton has been self taught and mayer went to berkley for blues guitar so so if anything i think clapton has more talent than mayer (and more experience) and you just can't compare gravity to layla

  • @Nicksbia John mayer left berklee in 1st year itself btw. he believed the music they taught was very institutionalized.

  • @bhavanareddy90 clapton never made it out of high school while he went to join the "yard birds" also i'm pretty sure mayer also took lessons b4 collage (presuming since he went to berklee) clapton listened to records learned by ear by himself with no instruction

  • @Nicksbia One thing "Collage" can teach you is proper grammar and spelling, though. ;D

  • @wicky615 You have bested me.

  • @Nicksbia there is no doubt though when you say you cant compare gravity to layla. i'd definitely second that bit!

  • @Nicksbia

Doesn't matter. It's just comes down to who play what. Anyways, you can't say one has talent over the other. I mean Mayer has better chops and understanding in music theory over Clapton. Not to mention, he's a killer acoustic guitar player. Clapton is more innovative and more experience. Also of course deserves more respect for being an influence that sparked killer guitar players such as Mayer, Van Halen, Brian May, Guthrie Govan and etc

  • @peacequinto Claptons acoustic playing > mayers acoustic playing (you need to do some research sir because claptons unplugged album was extremely popular also one of his biggest hits tears in heaven; acoustic). "Blues is easy to play, but hard to feel. -Jimi Hendrix" Mayer knows how to play blues and understands theory, but Clapton has had nothing to go by but feeling since the day he picked up a guitar.

  • @Nicksbia

Kay, you do your research. I am very familiar with Clapton's acoustic playing. Technical wise, he stands no chance with Mayer's. I wasn't talking which song got more popular. I am talking the technical aspect of playing acoustic guitar. Look up John Mayer's song Neon. Tell me that is easier than what clapton does in acoustic. Of course clapton has more feel of the BLues but you cant deny Mayer has a GREAT feel for it.

  • @peacequinto you do your reaserch he's playing chords while playing the bass on the E string in that song. Honestly that solecistic style is very fun to play (probably my favorite besides blues) and sounds beautiful but is done much better by greats such as joe pass. Second: point out in any of these conversations a point were i undermined meyer's technical abilities, because he probably has that on clapton cause thats what a teacher or professor will teach you, something clapton never had

  • @peacequinto also i do realize he did do other solecistic techniques in Neon for soling but still not his unique technique (and i feel like all you people that reply on that comment feel like i don't like meyer.... either that or you've never heard "clapton is god" before)

  • @peacequinto also i do realize he did do other solecistic techniques in Neon for soling but still not his unique technique (and i feel like all you people that reply on that comment feel like i don't like meyer.... either that or you've never heard "clapton is god" before, i'm pretty sure i called him jesus i guess thats an invite for all the meyer fanatics to get pissed off because he can't be second to one of the legends in guitar history?)

  • @Nicksbia mate in all fairness mayer is the best guitarist of his generation jsut like clapton was his until hendrix came around he even said it him self and in an interview shortly after this was done clapton admitted hes starting to lose it. John mayer is the clapton or hendrix of this generation and whoever doesnt believe that needs to open there fucking eyes!

  • @Fender074 agreed best of the generation

  • @Nicksbia

Bahahaha, that's a sweet analogy. Good stuff

  • @Nicksbia damn if clapton is god then Im athiest.. but Clapton isnt God.. Clapton isn't even a demi god

  • @atl2maryland your entitled to your opinion

  • @atl2maryland r u just trying to hate mayer, because this is the second straight video that u have had to make a comment on. and its always under the highest rated comments, im startin to smell troll

  • @Guitar1hero23 its alot more vids then those two dick.. I dont hate any1 but this guy does suck pretty bad. I just had freetime on my hands so I checked his playing which I found out to be horrible.. and some of the comments to be senseless.. im entitled to my opinion my son

  • @atl2maryland first off, im not your son in anyway. second, yes u are entitled to your opinion......it just sucks

  • @atl2maryland

If you are saying John Mayer sucks then get out because all the other guitar players that you probably respect probably give props to his playing

  • @peacequinto am I supposed to give a fuck? Most of the guitar players I respect never got a chance to hear his shitty playing... and the guy who taught me most of what I apply on the guitar could give two shits about any pop artist for that matter.. so nice try.

  • @atl2maryland

Educate yourself about the guitar you fool. Clapton, Beck, BB KIng, Buddy Guy, Slash, Guitarists from protest the hero, Billy Gibbons and John Scrofield gave praise to his playing. There is countless others. Who the fuck do you respect? Man fuckin open your ears and your mind. Pop isn't always shit. In every genre, there's always gonna be something shitty and Mayer isn't one of them. Call him shit but he can probably make you look stupid in a guitar battle

  • @Nicksbia they are simply two great guitar genius at work

  • @Nicksbia nah...mayer is moses...doyle bramhall 2 is jesus.

  • @JamonjiCahillibongo i can see it

  • @Nicksbia ummm, Jesus is God.

  • this is great!

mayer is awesome. obviously clapton needs no introduction.

Its so great to see blues legends and the new wave of blues greats playing together.

Who's better is not the point. blues is all about playing from the heart, no matter how fast or how loud you are.

It's musical truth! and there's no where to hide once your on that stage.

These guys do it so well.

  • Without Hendrix there would be no Clapton?! Guess your knowledge of rock history only goes as far back as 1967. Someone should give you a copy of "Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton". When Hendrix went to London, he asked to meet Clapton. Not saying one is better than the other, just setting the record straight.

  • @EAYW clapton said in his book that jimmi was better player but ya know he might have just been bein modest

  • @EAYW You are right, hendrix said that he looked up to eric clapton, but when he did get to jam on stage with clapton, hendrix blew him away.

  • Oh man. Here we go, the classic guitarist debate. Y'know, I agree, I think Mayer plays better here. Just like I think that SRV played better than Jimi. And I think it's hard to deny that actually. But what's impossible to deny, is the fact that without Jimi's one-of-a-kind outbreak....No SRV.....No Clapton...no John Mayer.

Music is always changing and muscians get better and better, because we keep rasing the bar higher and higher. Just never foget where you came from, but always progress.

  • Clapton's been around just as long as hendrix... and if hendrix never existed, Clapton would be just as popular as he is now...

  • no clapton without jimi? read more stuff before talking shit

  • HAHA! around 1.35 the keyboardest looks a lot like James May- for all you Top Gear fans out there!

  • Why is everyone disputing about who is better? These are two totally different guitarists with the same passion. and thats MUSIC!!!! who cares about the way they phrase their notes. Its good to see to bluesy guitarist together no matter what.

  • You are a fool.

  • ffs due...Clapton overrated!!?!??!?

He's one of the few (if not the only) guitarist who the black bluesmans aprove as a blues guitarist....

i think that said enaugh ....

  • ok.... john mayer is maddd good. but there is no way you can compare the 2. clapton is much better.

    SETTLED MOTHAFKAS.

-now get back to your lives.

  • Doesn't matter cause Stevie Ray Vaughan is better than both of them combined.

  • Hell yeah

  • stfu ass whipe

  • EC taking the bitch to school

  • ur a fucking retard he is the best he is god of guitar lol

  • Ur mother is a fukcin bitch retard fkin dumbass. Clapton is NO god because I'M GOD, do u understand, fkin idiot gay bastard?

  • ru fucking retarded.. u stupid muther fucker.. eric clapton is the best.... dont even say that u miserable cunt. fuck off eric Clapton.

  • dude it's all opinion. Eric obviously likes the sound he has.... he plays more bluesy now than in the Cream days. I'm glad he doesn't do that any more. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Cream It's just not the same now. I'd say he knows what's best for him now.

  • I agree..it is just my taste. I still love EC's playing no matter WHAT guitar he's playing..but just feel cheated that we only have one Bluesbreaker (BENO) album. Would love to see him get that rig together again..with or without Mayhall.

  • I hear what you're saying.... I agree.

  • check out from the cradle

  • Both are very good guitarist, but

    -CLAPTON IS GOD-

  • the sad thing is a lot of those girls probably didnt even know who clapton was until they saw him play with john

  • So lets thank john for doing his homework and bringing the blues to people who otherwise might have never heard it. He's doing more for blues than anyone else is because he's mainstream and can connect to a lot more people than other good guitarists like bonamassa.

  • This was'nt a guitar duel !! calpton could blow the diaper off mayer.he was just being a gentleman....

  • I remember seeing this live. I love this song and what a great version.

I hate myself for doing this but I'll add to the Mayer discussion. I think Mayer is innovative for bringing Blues to a modern generation. How many times have you honestly seen a teen age girl ( the same one who would listen to the Jonas Bros) mouthing the words to "Cold Shot" or "Red House"? I think that is a great thing.

  • Very very true. I cant stand how this video turned out into a debate on who is better...Clapton or Mayer. They are both actually great friends...and Claption inspired John Mayer to be what he is. Why cant we just give them both credit and just listen...cause this is a great performance both ways. Also with the blues thing...its true...I also now see girls melt as soon as he opens his mouth and say 1 simple word.....GRAVITY!

  • absolutely yes.

this cliche comparology sandbox game (who guitars the other's head off?!) COMPLETELY SUCKS

i too think that the best thing about "new breed" blues people like Mayer is they convert the very old blues tradition to a new generation of people

it's freaking cool to see blues so "revitalized"

and it's not sad that these girls dunno clapton - wouldn't it be more absurd if they had come for clapton? :)

  • um this was a reply for claptonhendrix1 and Levidamanguitar

  • This song has got to be super boring for Eric now and I think it shows in his uninspired playing this time around.

  • This version is shallow and pedantic.

  • 1:59 - 2:05 whats wrong with him?! O_o

  • Nothing...that's his way of being into it.

  • mayer was better..

  • maybe, but clapton is god ;) or something like that.. ( I don't speak english, so sorry if something is wrong)

  • i agree m8, mayer is much better :)

  • your a dumbass

  • and you are a backtard duckfucker, fkin moron... run to fuck ur sister retard -.-

  • no, clapton just wasnt showing his skills....

  • Yes sir.

  • talented or not - EC is a pioneer - Mayer is not.

  • Mayer is a pioneer in his own right for the newer generation of guitarists it's good to see a relatively new artist still keeping the tradition of good music alive. Especially in todays manufactured studio artists Mayer still has the roots of the classics and that's why him and Clapton blend together so well and that's what makes Mayer a pioneer as well as Clapton and don't get me wrong Clapton is King but Mayer is, in his own right, a BAMF. Peace

  • They are both amazingly talented. Can't say it any better.

  • I hate they Mayer puts a "T" in front of every word beggining with the letter "S" . In sounds so contrived

  • you mean "in tsounds tso contrived

  • I disagree-- difference of opinion.

  • i disagree as well. i think they both have really sweet sounding tones. can't go wrong with a strat.

  • I see alot of SRV in John Mayer with the sweep pisking and the awesome vibrato.

  • Where did you see sweep picking?

  • I didn't mean sweep picking i went scrap picking, where he scraps his pick across the deadend stringsbefore he plays the note. My bad, and if I didn't explain that well, sorry again.

  • Ah of course, thought so ;)

    cheers!

  • looks to me like EC liked it when mayer was playing some lead in the beginning, EC playing a fantastic rhythem. looked like it was fun.

  • i read in EC's biography that he actualy prefers playing rythm

  • holy shit I'm playing with Eric Clapton!!!111!!!

  • John Mayer will write whatever he wants, which happens to be LOVE SONGS + OTHERS.

  • It's too bad that some people think John Mayer can only write fluffy girly songs. (i.e. Your Body Is Wonderland or Daughters, practically the only two hit songs that fit in this category) But anyways, amazing performance as always for John Mayer and Eric Clapton.

  • "It's too bad that some people think John Mayer can only write fluffy girly songs."

Well if he keeps insisting on doing that, that`s all people will think.

  • Actually...he writes plenty of other types of songs, it just so happens they haven't gotten a lot, if any, airplay. 3x5, Why Georgia Why, No Such Thing (his first single, and the first song of his I ever heard), plus tons more.

  • where the hell is steve gadd i miss him

  • I'm a fan of clapton but this song it's sounds like shit eric doesn't shows how he play the guitar well maybe his doing this to promove J.mayer

    anyway clapton is god

  • I agree, but remember, the guy is getting old man.

He admitted himself that he's losing his powers...

Mayer is quite good though, nice licks...

  • Totally mental to see these two together :D

clapton-fan since i was like four years old and mayer-fan since the trio-era.. awesome performance :D:D thx for posting

  • never been impressed by mayer... but i gotta admit he's pretty freakin nasty in this vid. hes got thousands of miles to go to get on clapton's level though. by the time clapton was 25 he had created some of the greatest and most influential guitar albums ever with the yardbirds, john mayall and cream. mayer's 30 and what does he have to his name? some hot girlfriends and a catologue full of pop "rock"

  • listen to continuum and try telling me it's just pop "rock". john's moved away from room for squares and if continuum is any sign of what's to come, then john's future albums will be right up there with clapton.

  • but you have to remember that music isn't a race. different people mature at different times, and if more mayer maturing means playing bluesy stuff then he has only begun maturing and has a long journey ahead of him (even though i doubt he'll ever come close to good old clapton)

  • But you have to remember that when Clapton was twenty five he was surrounded with contemporaries playing "technically sophisticated" blues like he was. As far as I can see, John's the only one breaking the mold in mainstream music just as Clapton and others did in the 60's.. And for that he deserves credit.

  • that he does. i thought john mayers music was real teeny bopper stuff, but i've heard some of his stuff lately, and its really good bluesy stuff.

  • the best combination ever! They should make a whole album together!

  • John mayer and Clapton!!! Awesome!!!! Check out our song called "Missing You"

  • That was great!

  • siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiick.
