The Sassanid power were almost equal to the Roman empire at that time. Sassanids and Romans were bitter enemies. After the battle Armenia was under Persian rule again, but the Sassanid chose to let the Armenians keep their religion as long as they do not follow the Romans and you can see this effected Armenian adaptation of Christianity (Armenian Church)
@rouzbeh61 Nothing against Persians as well :) But there were battles before 451 and the battles didn't cease until 485, when an agreement was signed according to which Persia wouldn't impose its religion and persecute Christians. Why is it difficult to admit, that Persians tried Really hard to convert Armenians but Armenians stood their ground and Persians gave up. And their purpose was to assimilate Armenians to them...and as you know the first step of doing it is generally through religion.

I can see that this battle is important for Armenians, but for Persians was only consolidating their power over Armenia since Armenia was in Persian territories in that time. They wanted to free themselves from both sides and regain independence which they did a few centuries later. In all historical analyses it is said that the purpose of Persians was to convert Armenians but they couldn't break them. It wouldn't mean much for Persians, but for Armenians it was a fatal phase in preserving their Identity.

This already indicates that the area known as Armenia is in no way their place of origin.

Armenians fought bravely in the battle and that made the Sassanid to think about more rebellions if they wanted to convert the locals in Armenia. the main point of invasion of Armenia was to keep them in line with Sassanid rule not necessarily converting them, since Sassanids were Zoroastrians and their enemies (Romans) were Christians.Previously, Many Armenians were Zoroastrian for many years and that factor made them in the same league with Persians.(not all the time)

Armenians have always fought and preserved their Identity and Christianity... The Battle of Avarayr was one of the crucial points in that struggle for Identity! Armenians didn't even become part of Orthodox or Catholic churches, though the pressures were really strong, but remained faithful to the Armenian Apostolic Church since 301 AD. I'm really amazed and awed by the strength of Armenians! we should keep on being as strong and principled as our ancestors!

@eva03arm Nothing against the Armenians, but I think it could be really worse if Sassanids wanted to insist on converting the Armenians. The Sassanid power were almost equal to the Roman empire at that time. Sassanids and Romans were bitter enemies. After the battle Armenia was under Persian rule again, but the Sassanid chose to let the Armenians keep their religion as long as they do not follow the Romans and you can see this effected Armenian adaptation of Christianity (Armenian Church)

@rouzbeh61 Nothing against Persians as well :) But there were battles before 451 and the battles didn't cease until 485, when an agreement was signed according to which Persia wouldn't impose its religion and persecute Christians. Why is it difficult to admit, that Persians tried Really hard to convert Armenians but Armenians stood their ground and Persians gave up. And their purpose was to assimilate Armenians to them...and as you know the first step of doing it is generally through religion.

@rouzbeh61 The aim of the battle wasn't lands or wealth, it was converting Armenians into Zoroastrianism, and Armenians won from this point of view; that is Armenians' aim was to preserve Christianity, and Armenians got what they wanted, regardless of the losses they had... and you should also consider that Armenians were three times less and weaker in military power. And by the way the same Armenians helped Albania (Aghvanq) and Georgia to fight against Persians for Christianity.

I can see that this battle is important for Armenians, but for Persians was only consolidating their power over Armenia since Armenia was in Persian territories in that time. Purpose of war was to avoiding Armenian slip to the enemy side (roman) and in that case it does not matter if Armenian wanted to be christian or Hindu or Muslim, as long as you cooperate with central power you are good to go. I can't see this as a holy war, but I respect Armenian bravery.

@rouzbeh61 Armenians were on their territories but under Persian rule. And Armenians were not going to slip to either of the sides! They wanted to free themselves from both sides and regain independence which they did a few centuries later. In all historical analyses it is said that the purpose of Persians was to convert Armenians but they couldn't break them. It wouldn't mean much for Persians, but for Armenians it was a fatal phase in preserving their Identity.

I knew many armenians back in Iran, many of them were well educated and well behaved. As you said there were wars in our relationship but I can not recall any slaughtering or genocide. @eva03arm it may hurts, but it is not realistic. taking the western Armenia from turkey, after all these years and changes in demographic of the region is impossible for Armenia. it happens only through a major war in scale of Russian intervention. (not even Iran can do such thing) I am sure Russian don't act like that because it will hurt their economy significantly and political pressure will isolate them. it doesn't worth it. Fact...Armenian tribes DID NOT start around 2000 BC. Try 12000 BC. Get your facts straight. That is the reason they still embrace Christianity, the Semitic myth that keeps on erasing factual history. Ancient Armenian history does not mix with Judeo-Chrisitan myth. Either you believe in the whole Armenian history or you believe that you came down from Noah. Well,as an armenian I found this movie so pathetic I dislike it, there are too many false and unhistorical related stuff in this movie, for an example the Arms and some clothes are all false there is no helmet like that in history... why do they make something like that? this is childish looks very amateur! why cant we make movies like troy or spartacus etc..?

But the aim of the movie is to convey the meaning and ideology of that historical phase!

As far Vartan Mamigonian's helmet looking like a grecco-roman helmet, many of his portraits and even statues in Armenia depict him wearing such a helmet, and whether those depictions are based on history or not, it is what the people behind this picture are basing their image of Mamigonian on.

The emergence of Armenians as group is shrouded in mystery. And there are some conflicting theories, none is absolute. But to say that Armenians are foreign to the region is really dumb. Indo-European was very much present in those arias. In fact the earliest forms of Indo-European are found in the region. Ancient people like Hittite and Hayasa already spoke Indo-European. People who talk about Urartu should know Urartu was a tribal union. It did not consist of "one" people. Therefore it is even debatable if Urartu even was a singular kingdom. As for instance some would call the region at the time Urartu, while others the same region at the same time would call it Armenia. Evidence seems to support the notion that it was actually a unity of neighboring kingdoms and tribes of which Armenians where one and later became to dominate the region. And yeah they did mix!

The Armenian language we know today, and the Modern Armenian came about after 4th century BC, AFTER Urartu. But, the Modern Armenian is the result of Urartians, Nairans, Mitannians, all peoples that are regarded to be Ancestral Armenians, but not directly. Not one people today have direct ancestors that predate the 4th century BC period, so you can't say nothing about any other people.
