I agree with you that Texas would be considered an elite program. However, it most certainly is not the benchmark or even close. Benchmark in NC? Not even close. Benchmark in Bowl Games? Close but not quite. In reality to say that any team is the benchmark is kind of pointless. There is a top teir of college programs in the last 100 years and those are (not in order) USC, Alabama, Texas, Michigan, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, and Ohio State.
