The thieves are about the least useful in this game and as goes the same for the Mercenaries. The thieves are crappy because when you do hire them, they're so slow to follow you when you're free-running, plus they fall into the canals a lot (In Venice) it really angers me. The only thing the thieves are good for is luring guards away. The mercenaries are only good for fighting your battles. The Courtesans are the most useful because they distract the guards without arousing any suspicion.
