They don't have to have they uniforms on -- at least not in the prison my mom was sent to when I was ten -- but I've only ever seen anyone wear were sweats. And of course you can have your pictures taken with family and so on... But they probably cannot wear risque underwear. Or at least not that I know of... My mom wouldn't have sent those to me if they did anyway...

@CrystaTrees - Actually, after researching the hairstyles shown in the video, it was more late 1930's-1940's era. "Chicago" 1920's era had women cutting their hair short in a bob with finger waves. These women in the video still have shoulder length hair that is up in "pin curls", and up in bandanas("doo rags")-the styles that women adopted to do housework or work in the war factories. Red nailpolish/lipstick was1920's-40's. This video is not an accurate period peice, though.
