Back in the day Robert was good. Good for what Stryper was doing. If you had a drum contest between Robert, Portnoy, Peart, Rockenfield, and even Lee, Robert wouldn't get far, but what he laid down for his tracks were special. TOday as I know it Robert has been clean. Not saying it was due to drugs, but live? He doesn't have the showmanship anylonger or play with the intensity or accuracy that he used or to what the songs require. Why did they bring in another drummer? Hmmmm I wonder that too.
I do know it has happened many times. For example on one of Poisens albums they had the guitarist for Warrent come play many tracks on one of their albums. Drummer for Cinderella, they had a session guy come in an lay that down for him too. I know these are the typical cheese bands but I'm just saying it happens. Time is money, and sometimes guys were so high back then they couldn't perform, e.g., Robin Crosby from Ratt. Lars did use overdubs on the JUstice album. Session player on Black, hmmm.
Robert Sweet is solid. Hurricane opened up for them on a tour in the 80's. Hurricane's drummer did amazing solos. Robert never wanted to do a solo. He's not into solos. Tommy Lee? Sure...upside down and pyro. Tommy Aldridge? Sure. Neil Peart? Sure. Alex Van Halen? Sure...great solos. At least Rob can keep time and producers let him play on the album. Can't say the same for a lot of big name drummers.
@Gordfozzfoster Robert didn't play on the latest Stryper record, though. It was Kenny Aronoff, session drummer extraordinaire (formerly of John Mellencamp and Smashing Pumpkins).
@Gordfozzfoster Blasphemy! Name ONE album whose producer didn't let Alex or Neil play on. ONE! You can't. And as for Tommy Lee, the only album he never played on he chose not to. He's far from the likes of Alex and Neil, but he's a lot better than Robert Sweet, technically, and Tommy's pocket is much, MUCH deeper than Sweets will ever be.
@sp3ci4lkpo I too was shocked to hear Robert Sweet didn't play on the latest Stryper stuff. Tommy Lee is an awesome drummer, showman, porn star, dj, tv host, reality tv star, singer, author and songwriter...etc. Bob Rock's band, Rockhead, Chris Taylor on drums. Now listen to Dr Feelgood and Enter sandman. Same drummer? Use your ears. Harris Van Berkyl, studio guitarist. Bob Rock and Mike Fraser use the same vocalists too. Dave Steele, Don Wilks, Marc LaFrance, Mick DaLavie.
@Gordfozzfoster No, no... Blashphemy as in, "How dare you imply that either Alex or Neil were ever ghosted!" I'm very familiar with Lee's playing (one of my major influences in terms of feel), and while it's possible, I highly doubt he didn't record Dr. Feelgood. That song, especially, has his stamp all over it (especially the cymbal work). Seasoned session drummer or not, capturing another drummer's signature feel is exceedingly difficult, and Feelgood sounds to me to be 110% Lee. My $.02.
@sp3ci4lkpo Tommy and Chris Taylor are very close friends. Lars has mentioned Chris too. Chris might have layed a guide track down. You like Feelgood too? Kick drum aimed at the loading bay door in Little Mountain Sound Vancouver. Loading bay door mic'd. Yup...that huge bass drum and floor tom sound is a metal loading bay door reverberating. The door and studio are gone now. Brian McLeod from Headpins was the first to do this in 1980. Headpins song called "Walkin Away".
@Gordfozzfoster I'm aware of Chris' playing but doubt he played on Feelgood - unless it was as a joke. Feelgood was during the Crue's "smoother" years, and there's nothing on it Tommy isn't up to playing, so why? Can't see the band allowing Rock to call in another drummer on some primadonna whim. What would the value proposition have been? I liked Feelgood (the song), but it was one of their cheesier albums, and I hate Neil's voice. Now... Motley Crue (with Corabi)? THAT's another story. :)

Robert was never known as being a "great" drummer... he gets the job done and I would say he's a "good" drummer, but I wouldn't count on some awe-inspiring solo eminating from him.
see i have nothing but respect for any drummer in the bizz, im sorry this simply does not impress me the least bit, i mean that lean back and hit the cymbal "kinda" behind him........wow your a milestone, i know im coming off rude but seriously who is impressed by this? i just want to know your youtube id for further information
As a solo, this is high school showoff stuff, but he gets the job done. He shines in the studio. And he had the good sense to keep his solo under 3 minutes.
Hey, the truth is Stryper is really good (seeing them soon at the House of Blues Anaheim, CA USA) but the drums in Stryper are very basic heavy playing, Robert is a great guy, met him and the band many times but as far as talent, he's basic and fits the band perfectly.
Agreed. Leave Robert alone guys. He has a nice heavy musical feel. Why has drumming these days turned into being about who is technically faster, flashier, does more chops etc.. etc...
Nobody cares about having a nice heavy feel and groove for metal/rock anymore and it makes me sick. It's all about how many notes can I squeeze in before the next measure so I can hog the spotlight.
hey bamdude3 and allenvanhoosier shut up about the rude comments he an awsome drummer.and if your gonna say something rude about him you might as well not say anything at all about him.
I love stryper but this guy is a joke of a talent. I've been following them for a while and Robert is nothing more than a vain metal head who is more about "looking metal circa 1984" and thinking he's cool because of his feathered bangs and tight leather outfits. His whole demeanor screams "look at me - ignore our message" and the solo is something my 12 year old could play. 16th notes and triplets on the dbl bass. WOW, that's a toughy. He needs to take lessons from Thommas Lang.
He certainly isn't the most talented drummer by any stretch of the imagination, but his style fits their music perfectly and he's a heck of a lot of fun to watch. I think you're a tiny bit harsh on him.
robert sweet is one of the best metal drummers out there but i started listening to stryper a long time ago the yellow and black attack and soldiers under command keep rockin robert sweet
@80stamametal I am use to guys like Peart, Portnoy, Buddy Rich and guys like this...masters of technique and power, but then again Phil Rudd succeeds of his trademark sound, rather than mind blowing skills. And I think this is where Sweet fails in my estimation - his sound lacks distinction. Sweet sounds like any kid in a basement pounding away on his second big drum kit. Not trying to be disrespectful, but Sweet just does not impress me.
@spudnutsncoffee Agreed. Though his technique isn't mind-blowing, he's solid, entertaining (which can't be said for MANY drummers), and he does play pretty musically - i.e. what he plays is tasteful and appropriate to the music.
All this "best drummer " stuff is NONSENSE!!....there are no best drummers, only different ones! Depends very much on what you like in terms of style..... do you like less? (Ac Dc) or more? (Rush)......I like BOTH! For different reasons. As for Stryper......one of my favourite bands......Rob Sweet? one of my Favourite drummers!! VERY Different style.....Very different Kit layout....Charisma by the bucketful!! AWESOME!!.....GOD BLESS!!
does anyone have a idea why (except for show purposes) there is this bass drum that points at the audience? he never seems to use it...on his older "double kits" he used to turn around to play the drums on the "other side" but this bassdrum looks kinda lost there...
Yes, it is for show purposes...Robert felt the audience never really got to see the drummer behind the kit so he started turning it sideways so the fans could see him.
Yes, we are ignorant (rockers), and you're broke hehe. It's called a SHOW, Bob is a great rock drummer, he's solid, and APPARENT, that's what we like. What do you like, fat & jazzy?

why are you here. just go wank to a video of buddy rich, and yeah he probably would be laughing at this, if ot for the fact that he's dead, if he was alive then yeah maybe he would

It's great that he has some fans but the best drummer, I do not see it or hear it. I would love to see Robert sit in with Rush & see & hear what takes place if your comparing him to be better than Neil Peart.

Robert is as good a drummer as Rushs' Neil Peart.
Maybe a tad better.

He is my second favorite drummer. Next to Robert.

I grew up on Robert Sweet. All you other folks should also check out Derek Roddy, and Danny Carey as well. God bless.
