The nuclear explosion occurs at such high temperatures that the metal is separated from the rest of the molecule and oxygen and/or carbon dioxide is released which escapes through cracks in the upper layers. A crater is thus formed.

The blast cleared a spherical area in the alluvial deposits in valley at Yucca Flats, which then usually collapsed upward until this subsidence crater happened, anywhere from immediately to a week later. If you go look into Yucca Flats, NV you'll see hundreds of these craters there.

Try watching the media footage of the towers exploding while an aircraft appears to disappear into each one as though the tower just absorbs it without resisting it at all.
