This is so beautiful! I watched the film for the first time last summer (when the world cup was on :-p) and fell in love with it. I had incredibly difficult exams and this gave me a bit of escapism and a much needed revision break! It has now overtaken Pride and Prejudice and Emma as my favourite Jane Austen novel.
I loved this scene so much! Brandon fell in love at the same time with Marianne and her voice.
I also liked the moment inmediately after that scene. That glimpse of the solitary melancholic figure of the English countryside gentleman, acompanied by the dog. Almost like a painting from sir Joshua Reynolds or someone similar... Its suits so well with the music then...
I already loved Doyle´s work in "The little princess", so it has been a nice surprise discovering he composed the score for S&S
This version is more academic...It's gorgeous, but You can't imagine an ordinary teen girl, singing like this. Kate's version is more..'homey'..Charming and sweet..)
@LunaGirl2001 ive tried to find the kate winslet version, but i can never find it anywhere, i wish i could she sang it so beautifully, not that the girl on this version is bad shes so much better than jane eaglen, but kate just has an innocent unstudied sound, but i dont think the kate version is available anywhere
I am a contra-alto and I always get so jealous of the people who can reach such highnotes with such brilliance. It is utterly and completely beyond my abilities.
@larkinthesky Oh dear. It's about the length of your vocal folds hon. It's CRAZY to be jealous of someone's vocal register, CRAZY. A bit like wanting their hand shape or parents. If you really are a true contralto, you are an incredibly rare bird indeed and will never be short of work, unlike many excellent sops. Be in awe of their abilities just as much as your own, eh? People like Bach, Handel et al wrote for every single voice type with equal passion. For a reason! Cherish your gift.
I love this version more, because I just love the singer (Jane Eaglen?)...But I like Kate's too, and I think they should include both versions in the CD. When I bought a soundtrack for the movie 'Aurore', they also recorded it with a professional voice, and in that case, I loved the 'unprofessional' movie version more...I think they should always include both versions when possible.
LA meraviglia di questa canzone non trova parole per essere descritta..è perfetta per rispecchiare il film...e di conseguenza il mondo della cara Jane Austen!
This is Jane Eaglen's version of this song. Eaglen is a performing, trained opera artist, and Kate Winslet is an actress who can sing. (No offense, I love Kate). This version is on the soundtrack to Sense and Sensibility. While this song is performed lovely, Kate Winslet's version is beautiful as well.
@Ariana97899 This is not Jane Eaglen singing, and it is not the version on the Sense and Sensibility soundtrack CD. This version is from a CD called Cinema Choral Classics II, sung by an unknown singer.
Thank you for sharing this. I like this so much better than Jane Eaglen's rendition. Patrick Doyle wrote in the S&S soundtrack liner notes that the song was supposed to represent Marianne's youthful innocence at the start of the movie, and Eaglen's voice never communicated that to me. She sounded way too mature and over-the-top, IMO. This singer's voice is much more clear and youthful. I wish either this or Kate Winslet's version had been on the soundtrack. Thanks again for sharing!
GLORIOUS! I prefer her to Jane Eaglen.. I dunno, maybe it's because I'm a coloratura soprano looking to hear someone with at least a lyrical ability sing it... haha, I'm excited! Beautiful, thank you for posting!
this song is adorable the way it's sung is great (boths this and Kate's way) but I fear it has not been written by P. Doyle.. but by John Dowland.. a musician of the late elizabethan period..
THIS is Kate Winslet's version. Listen to her voice and compare it to the one in the film. 'The other' version is that of Jane Eaglen, it's the one on the original soundtrack's CDs and the voice is very different.
Indeed it was. One of my favorite film scores. I remember this one being quite remarkable as well but I haven't heard it in its entirety since I last saw the film.
soo beautifull, i always close my eyes and envision soft snowy scenery with a romantic couple in the midst of heavy snow falling around them <3 with this song.. that was really descriptive lol
Yeah, amen!!!I've watched this movie for the first time when i was 12 and i remember being very moved by it.Besides,Kate Winslet was(and still is) one of my favourite actresses (the TITANIC effect) and i became also a huge fan of Emma Thompson after that.
When I watched this movie I felt totally moved too. Non other movie before had had such an effect on me. Everything is perfect, the characters, the story, the music...I just can't get enough of it! ANd ...totally agree about Kate Winslet, she is such a great actress :)
This version is beautiful, but I would like to find the same version than that we hear in the movie...same adaptation for piano and same kind of singing...Does anyone know if such a version exist? oo
it does. there's actually a Jane Austen songbook with that sheet music in it. my friend has it and I borrowed it once. It's a great collection from all the movies.
yes it's on the album of the soundtrack from the film, any good record store can order it for you if they haven't got it in stock.... i have it at home, it's heaven isn't it just like the film?
Alan Rickman was there but not Emma Watson. Other Stars from Harry Potter were Emma Thompson, Robbie Coltrane, Imelda Staunton and Kenneth Brannagh! It was a really cool night! I did try and record some of it on my phone but It didnt work very well :( Do you like Patrick Doyles music?
Oh, I adore Patrick Doyle! I'm fascinated in the things that are characteristic to him - the wind instruments, the long notes, the overall softness in his pieces...
I mixed up two Emmas. It was Emma Thompson who was at the concert, of course.
You were there? Oh, I had wished so much for being able to see the concert. Alan Rickman and Emma Watson were there, am I right. Not to mention other stars as well.
Very nicely done. The lyrics are by the 16th cent. English tropadour and composer John Dowland, though the music is different.

Weep you no more, sad fountains
What need you flow so fast?
Look how the snowy mountains
Heavens sun doth gently waste.
But my sun's heavenly eyes
View not your weeping
That now lies sleeping,
Softly, softly that now softly lies sleeping.
