In 2003 I have no Idea how he didnt even end up among the top 3, he was sensational that year they only lost to Juve in the champions league semifinal because they had crappy defence and Figo missed a penalty. Zidane desurved the Ballon D´or in 2000, 2003 also. But thats the way it goes, he did win the Fifa World Player of the year award three time though.

So when a player like Zidanes caliber receives a red card and a player like Messi who doesnt even get a yellow card then of course they will always have their favourite. No doubt the Puskas, Peles, Garrinchas, Maradonas of this world once dominated their era but Zidane played during arguably the hardest, filled with the most talent and stood out & dominated it himself. Even at 34 against the best Brazilian side assembled. Todays football lacks class players & talent in defense is scarce vs the last generation.

To me that generation of footballers paved the way for modern football and the Maestro was THE most important. But thats just me.

Anyway, i think its funny that you include Bierhoff in your list. He played at world class level for 3 years max. ok, he scored the golden goal to win the european championship for germany but i think if you have to name a german player of that generation, youd have to take klinsmann over Bierhoff.
